A big bang in the middle of the night

A few nights ago, we went to bed about 10/30pm and about an hour later, I was just managing to get to sleep when there was an almighty crash somewhere in the house. I shot out of bed with my heart pounding. Some years ago, friends had overhead cupboards come crashing down and I thought that might have been what had happened. I checked the kitchen, laundry, Murphy bed in the spare room (that pulled out of the wall when we were installing it) but nothing seemed amiss. As I came back past the little store-room something didn’t seem quite right. The Weldmesh panels on the second shelf had fallen forward, sending the wine bottles toppling over each other. Would you believe that, despite the horrific noise, only one bottle broke when the shelf collapsed on top of it. And the crash didn't even wake Vince. The photo was taken after we cleaned up the area. Today we’re making repairs so it doesn’t happen again.

@JudyEv Heh. Same with Jack, the "leader"of two bands I am in. He doesn't know how loud he plays, even with his hearing aids turned on.

You were lucky that only one boggle broke. I remember when one of our library top shelves broke, the books on that shelf fall on the floor and little by little also the other shelves broke. When I entered the room I thought a thief had been there.

@JudyEv - I also found the books in pristine state, that was surprising for those that fell from a height of more than two meters.

That would have been a mess for sure. I was really surprised that there was not more damage.

@LadyDuck It seems a bit unusual that none of the books were damaged.

It could have been much worse, but my heart is beating now just reading this.

The noise was just SOOO loud. It was all the bottles hitting each other but none fell far enough to break.

Only one bottle? You must have a guardian angel. I thought it might have been a transforming. That happened once where we used to live. It made a terrible noise.

Later, I worked out the noise was like tipping a whole heap of bottles into a bin half full of bottles. We were so lucky that only one broke.

Once he takes out his hearing aids, he doesn't hear much at all.

My heart was pounding too. I hate unexplicable noises. Once I know what the noise is, then I'm okay. Our fridge used to make terrible noises making its ice but once I worked out what it was, it didn't worry me.

It is indeed frightening when we are asleep and are startled out of bed with a huge bang. I have had occasions when such happened and I had to walk around gingerly to find out the cause. Of course the worry is of some intruder going about his job! Good that the damage was repaired with minimal loss.

I guess because of the nature of the noise, I wasn't worried about an intruder. I also feel our house is quite secure.

I can't believe Vince didn't wake up. I sleep very lightly and would have freaked out. I'm glad only one bottle broke.

Once his hearing aids are out, he doesn't hear much. And he was in a deep sleep too. You can see that on his watch.
