I do not remember

I know I share lots of things that go on at school. Some things, I do remember doing similar when I was in school a billion years ago. Other things I do not remember even my kids doing. Yesterday in Kindergarten is an example: It was "Glow Day". The rooms had black lights, and "party balls" that swirled colors around the room. The kids got "Light stick" bracelets. They wrote with pens that glowed in the dark. The teachers even got glow in the dark fedora style plastic hats for them to wear. On the floor were marked out with flourescent tape different activities, like Hop Skotch and glow bowling, with glowing pins that you added up. I was only in there a half hour, but it was quite an experience. These teachers are very creative.

We never did anything like that when I was in school. I remember Pretty coming home all excited telling me about the different activities they did in class. (I usually took cupcakes or cookies for her home room class until I was told I couldn't do that anymore.) Until she graduated, I sent her carnations or roses on Valentine's Day and Christmas.

@DaddyEvil I had a friend who was a school secretary but also made home made treats for the different things at school.

Flowers are always fun. Especially since COVID home made treats are not encouraged although occasionally we see some.

@GardenGerty That's really a shame. I had as much fun making the treats as the kids did eating them.

It sounds like a very good time. I would have loved that as a child.

They posted some pictures on the internet, so I added one. Better than the school carnivals we used to have, but the same vibe.

The closest to this I remember is school carnivals, but they cost money to participate. This really has the show biz vibes. I hope you get to come back and see the picture.

@velvet53 I know we have a family read night. I do not usually go as it would mean a drive back into town. I know we do a lot of things here that are fun.

@GardenGerty I love your picture. The boys look so cute in their hats. Where my granddaughter went to school at had a family night. All the games were free and they won prizes. The only thing we had to buy was food.

That sounds like loads of fun, did they play music to dance to? I think we all have selective memories. Some only select the good or fun stuff of their youth, others only remember the bad stuff that hindered them and some remember both depending on their mood.

They had some video dance times, with glow in the dark characters on screen. I remember school carnivals, sort of the same vibe as this, but this was free for the kids to do.

It is supposed to engage them more in learning. We have teachers writing grants to get curriculum tied to movement activities. The neuroscience says you remember more when you move.

@sallypup Probably. Movement, art, music are all parts of learning that get forgotten.

Definitely didn't have anything like that when I was in school, but things that glowed in the dark were just not available (apart from those alarm clocks with radioactive fingers).

Glow sticks are all the rage here. We use them in fifth grade science to discuss chemical reactions. I heard that the women who were hired to paint the radioactive clock faces often developed cancers.

The only thing we ever did that was different was having roller skating parties. Other than that, it was always learning.

One school I worked at got rollerskates for nine weeks for the gym and gave kids lessons for PE. That would have been fun as a kid.

@GardenGerty We didn't have a gym until after I left. They turned the church into a gym and built a new church.
