When blackboards went 'green'

I wrote about a teacher from my school years filling her blackboard with marvellous drawings. I was reminded that at some stage our blackboards were all painted green. This was supposed to be easier on the eyes. They always remained ‘blackboards’ though.
I also remember writing with a dip-and-scratch pen and having a desk with an inkwell in it. At a certain stage, fountain pens were allowed but they often leaked. Biros were banned when they first came in but now I write with nothing else. Times have sure changed.
The photo is Vince's of a boys' classroom in Nepal.

We still had blackboards when I was in school. On my electronic devices, I prefer a black background with white text. That makes it easier for me to read and interact with. (I seriously dislike myLot for not letting me change the white background to black. The white background burns my eyes.)

@DaddyEvil I know what you mean. I change my Kindle background to black since it would be way to bright.

@JudyEv Oh yes, there was another one, but his team didn’t win the Super Bowl. This was the first Australian to actually WIN the Super Bowl. The other Australian player didn’t even get to play in one, unfortunately.
What’s really unusual is that the best kicker in American football is from Ireland. I love when people come from overseas.

We did have green "blackboards" too. I always wondered why was it called "blackboard" when it's green.
I bought a dip pen when I was young. I still remember the feeling of writing with it, it's smooth and "flowy", though a bit troublesome as compared to ball point pens.
Recently I have seen posts about "generations of erasers" on Instagram.... Many things have been evolved since we were young. Sometimes when I told my children about those things we used when we were young, I felt like hearing my mom told me that when I was young too.....

I loved getting all the new books at the beginning of each year. I was a quick reader and would have all the reading books read before we even got to them in class. I think we had whiteboards in high school but there was always a problem if someone used a permanent marker rather than a non-permanent.

I had to look Biros up, and it looks like a BIC pen. It seems like our blackboards were also a deep dark green.

Biro is actually a brand name and yes, it would be the same as a BIC. Here 'biro' is now a generic name for any of those sorts of pens. What would you call it? Just a 'pen'?

When I was first in school, all the boards were blackboards. Sometime during the grade school years they were switched to the green ones.
I remember that the teachers had two students to help clean them up at the end of the day. One student would erase everything and wipe the boards with a damp cloth. Another student had the honor of ''clapping the erasers'' by going outside, or in bad weather going to a window. The windows in schools never used to have screens, and no air conditioning, either. When it was my turn I always opted to clean the boards rather than clap the erasers, as that made me sneeze!

I recall the big radiators made of iron? They would get so very hot. Someone was always brushing against them and getting a burn, or scorching a skirt or pants leg.

I recall that all the boards were green when I went to school. I can see where it would be easier on the eyes. I remember stories of young boys butting girl's braids in the inkwell. Not sure what a dip and scratch pen is though.

I think they'd all have whiteboards now if they have boards at all. Probably most students have their own computers.

Everything has evolved and especially these days where something new is being created. Every year there's an advancement in technology.

My mother saw a lot of changes in her life but it's possible I'll see even more in mine.

@judyev Goodness, you’ve just painted me a picture of my school in Malawi with a green blackboard, inkwell in the desk and a dip and scratch pen. I felt awfully grown up when I started to use those pens. I was ink monitor for a while, filling up those inkwells with blue Quink ink.

I remember Quink. When Vince first worked in the bank all the ledger entries had to be done with a dip and scratch.

I remember seeing blackboards in elementary school through college being colored dark green.

I had a toy blackboard, full size, on rolling wheels, as a child. I can't remember if it was black or green.

Here, in my country, most public schools still use green "blackboards". But in some schools, it is now "white" boards and they use whiteboard markers to write down lessons.
