What am I doing up so early? Well, it’s the end of the line with Bestill and me. I’m taking the car to my niece in Lexington to begin a new life. Before I leave, I’ll give you another great singer to help you celebrate Black History Month in style. Ella Fitzgerald And with a voice like Ella’s ringing out There’s no way the band could lose (Stevie Wonder, “Sir Duke”) The First Lady of Song. If you have any doubt about this woman’s contribution to music, look at the 13 Grammy awards, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the countless praises of everyone in all genres. Like many other performers of her era, she had to face discrimination, but she overcame it with her unbelievable talent. There’s a great story on her website about Marilyn Monroe calling the manager of the Macambo Nightclub in West Hollywood and telling him to book Fitzgerald there; and, if he did, she (Monroe) would be front and center every night. Fitzgerald said she never had to play a small jazz club again after that engagement. She was one of the best friends a song ever had. Ira Gershwin once said, “I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them.” One of the obituaries mentioned that Fitzgerald was never brimming with self-confidence and would frequently leave the stage, asking, “Did I do all right?” Oh yes, Lady Ella. You certainly did. Ella Fitzgerald Born Ella Jane Fitzgerald, April 25, 1917, Newport News, Virginia Died June 15, 1996, Beverly Hills, California (stroke) (age 79) HALLS OF FAME: Down Beat Jazz, 1979; National Women’s, 1995 I could use yesterday’s song (“It Don’t Mean a Thing”) with Fitzgerald singing it with Ellington, but instead I picked one of my favorite songs, “It’s Only a Paper Moon”:

My son told me when he was a kid that Ella Fitzgerald or Ella Fritzgerald as he called her was born in Virginia.

What did he call her? I think autocorrect messed it up.

“Ella Fritzgerald.” That’s cute. There is a middle school in Newport News named after her.

That is correct. She just dropped me off at home and will probably never get out of that car because it has heated seats.

Yeah, I remember hearing this one a lot back in the 60s after we got our first TV, I don't remember the programs I heard it on but like so many popular songs back then a lot of shows would play it for whatever reason. It's a really good one too.

I don’t know how many different people have recorded it. The song goes back to the 30s. The movie Paper Moon took its name from this song.

I live in an area that wasn't up with the times until after both MTV and the Internet was available. If it was new news I'd get it from Ft Bliss, not EP.

@FourWalls Remember me telling you about Ricky Riccardi my coworker's husband who is the Louis Armstrong expert? Their firstborn daughter is named Ella. You'll never guess why.

Yay! I’m proud to say that I not only loved her, but I know many of her songs, including this one.

Oh, I was hoping you would honor Ella at some point. She was a true trailblazer, absolutely phenomenal. I can still hear my aunt humming ''Dream A Little Dream Of Me'' and aunt and my grandmother both loved her. Even though she wasn't the person who debuted it, my very favorite was ''At Last''. Aunt was able to see her sing in person once, she always wanted to and managed to do that on a business trip and was in the right place at the right time. She was the first African American to ever win a Grammy award, too.
