Are you familiar with what is called the honor system?

I was not aware that many people do not understand the honor system. It is basically a system of trusting people to do the right thing. When it works, it's great. When people take advantage of it, it is a complete failure.
Most often here in the Midwest, I see the basic honor system at many farmstands. Often the people who are selling fresh produce, etc. are not able to stay with their stand and guard it and serve the occasional customer all day, so there will be a sign, and usually a box of some type, for payments. Usually the sign will say something such as ''Honor system, please put your payment here.'' And people generally do. Once in a while, I will hear that someone's payment boxes have been wiped out or stolen, but not often. Some of the vendors have their payment container permanently mounted or screwed down with an opening cut in it for the money. I don't blame them. I know how much work it is to grow foods in scorching heat. Rewarding, yes, but still it's work.
Honor systems work in other ways.
Google tells me:
''Academic Integrity: Students pledge not to cheat or steal, often managing their own conduct committees.
Unsupervised Transactions: Commonly used in self-service kiosks, farm stands, or parking, where patrons pay by depositing money in a box without staff present.
Reduced Surveillance: Used in environments like prisons or workplaces to foster personal responsibility and minimize administrative overhead.
Trust-Based Culture: It assumes that the majority will act ethically, often placing the responsibility on participants to report infractions.
If violated, such systems may still have consequences, though they are fundamentally built on the honor of the individuals involved. ''
In other words, it operates on trust--trust that people will do the right thing.
Have you seen any farm honor systems in your area? Do you know of anyone who actively uses the honor system?

Oddly, from what I have heard from people I know that have them, many times the people who don’t pay are the ones who can afford it. My one friend said one time she had an older fellow pay for his vegetables from a sack of pennies. I guess it takes all kinds to make a world.

@MarieCoyle it is part of their livelihood. It would be like taking food off their children's plates. I'm glad you are honest.

I couldn't take it without paying for it. Evidently, that doesn't bother some people.

We pass a self service egg stand on our way to church and I have seen farm stands operating that way.

In decent weather, we have a stand with eggs not too far from my home. I stopped by there last fall as they had some vegetables. There was a sign by the egg cooler that said ''FREE: Two really mean, fat, roosters.'' Then a number to call. I assume someone stepped up and called for the roosters.

This reminds me of how the government used to run. We used we all wanted and expected the same thing. Our country was run on the honor system. Now it is all such a joke.
I haven't been to a farmers market in years but I do recall they were run this way. It used to be a different world. There used to be honor and morals. Not so much nowadays.

I know we are in a mess. But there are still some good people out there with honor and morals.

Oh, that is truly sad. They planned that for sure. I like to think someday, people will have to account for actions like this.

You generally see more of them in late summer when harvesting starts. Many people who grow a lot of pumpkins here will do it in the fall, too.

Yes, there are people who sell eggs here who use it. There is another self service stand here for all sorts of things. It isn't manned but they have security cameras up, not exactly the same thing. There is a plant stand near friends that leaves all kinds of things out weather permitting, I guess they haven't had a problem because they continue to do it.

We have an egg stand not far from here in decent weather. I do know the lady who has it. She had to put up a camera when eggs climbed up so high in price, as people wiped her out. She didn't want to put one up, she wanted to trust people.
