~Bit By A Dog~

Good evening y'all! I hope you're doing amazing. For the first time in my life today, I was bit by a dog. It's not bad as you can tell from the photo but good grief it hurt still! More scared me than anything. I am a HUGE dog person, and no this experience hasn't changed my mind. This dog was a stray wandering the neighborhood and tormenting neighbors so my daughter and her husband put him in an outside kennel until the owners could be found. No one ever showed up for their dog. They were going to try to find him a home on FaceBook but wanted to make sure he's good with people first. I told them put him on a leash, I'll get close enough (first reading his body language of course) to see if he's good for a new home. He walked up to me y'all wagging his tail, no signs of aggression (no growling/barking/hair raising at all) and literally BIT my stomach out of nowhere! I have never seen a dog do this before. We definitely got our answer...unfortunately this fur baby will most likely have to be put down as he's dangerous. Have you ever seen a dog attack without any signs of aggression before?! I am so grateful it wasn't worse, I was being protected. And before you ask I will never sign up to be the guinea pig again!

Dogs wag their tails for many different reasons, some will wag their tails and bite if you raise your hand over their heads because to them that is a sign of aggression by a human. Perhaps taking the pup to a vet to screen for disease or whatnot would be a good way to protect yourself, it looks to me like your skin was broken a little.

@rebelann My daughter said the same thing, I didn't realize there were so many reasons for a dog wagging its tail. I thought it was a good sign--my daughter said nope and I learned that lesson the hard way. My skin thank God was not broken. My daughter has worked with animals for many years and said we would definitely know if the dog had rabies. He did not.

Your daughter should help you learn the proper way to let a dog introduce itself, never attempt to initiate that meeting. But I have to say you were brave to try.

@rebelann Yeah it was a stupid decision on my part. My daughter has taught me, unfortunately in the moment I was not thinking like I should have been.

That's scary. When I was a kid, I was bitten by barking dog in a neighborhood. I was walking going to school when a doh keeps on barking me and suddenly rushed towards me and but my buttocks. My short pants were torn. I ran back home crying.

@LovingMyBabies The worse of that incident was the numerous injection of anti rabies.

So sorry that happened to you. From what I can, you’re lucky the dog didn’t puncture your skin. All I know is to be aware of dogs wagging their tails, because they wag for different reasons and beware of strays. I love dogs, too, but am always wary.

@DianneN My daughter said the exact same thing! I always thought a wagging tail meant a happy dog. I definitely learned a valuable lesson-the hard way unfortunately. Thank you.

@DianneN Thank you so much! I've been cleaning it, putting peroxide on it and triple antibiotic ointment after. Praying for a quick healing as well, thank you.

I've heard of tail wagging not being very reliable as an indicator of friendliness, but that's it. I probably would have been as surprised as you were. I'm glad it wasn't a severe bite, but I know that was a scare!

@AliCanary Yes my daughter said the same thing when I told her and showed her what happened. She said Momma you've been with me on dog training sessions... I knew better. Me too, so grateful the skin wasn't broken or anything!

@LindaOHio Thank you! My daughter has worked with animals for many years and she said the dog definitely did not have rabies. I was worried about the same thing, she said we would definitely be able to tell if the dog did.

So sorry! I am a huge dog person myself. But recently I have heard and read a lot of news about dogs attacking people for no reason. Now, I am very careful around any stranger dog. They can be unpredictable. The wagging of tail might be for other reasons too

@LovingMyBabies I hope that it was nothing serious and is all taken care of. I was twice bit by cat for no obvious reason in my growing up years. I am damn scared of cats, I have a phobia for them. I don't go close to them.

With this unexpected behavior I would worry about the dog maybe having rabies. Be careful.

Were you wearing your hamburger disguise? Sorry, I know it's not a laughing matter. Was he maybe in early stage of rabies?

That is very unusual. I have never seen or heard of a dog biting someone like that without barking or showing signs of aggression. I wonder if there are medical reasons why it acted that way? Glad you are okay. I hate to think the pain you'd be in if that dog had done more damage.

One dog that my relatives and myself adopted in 1988 at an adoption center outside of New Orleans bit me since the employee who handled the dog mentioned that the dog that we adopted was abused by his former owner who was make decided that I was as mean as his former owner and bit me before we kissed and made up and adopted him before he was put down 10 years later.

i'm really sorry this happened to you. i think i've heard the stories how some dogs are triggered by unknown things and they tend to act people or small children.

That’s too bad, but you can’t have a dangerous dog out there. I’m really sorry you were bit, but I’m glad it didn’t put you off dogs in general.

Have you had a tetanus shot recently? It looks like he punctured your skin so it might be a good idea. He may have smelled something odd and that's why he bit you.

Wow I feel bad that you were bitten especially on your stomach. Doesn't sound like that dog would be a good fit for anyone. I am a dog lover but that would have scared the heck out of me.

Never trust a stray dog is my 1st response, I've never been bit & that's cause I know if I don't know a dog I don't trust it to be bit. He - she probably bit you cause it was scared & didn't know you & has been mistreated & got away from who had it, I wouldn't have it put down but take time to get it friendly with you & show it not everyone is dangerous, all strays needs a good friend to love.
