Here's another strange thing for today

I've been having issues with my platelet levels recently. I was diagnosed in January but it has probably been going on for 6 months at the very least. Anyway I've had the levels measured several times lately and the numbers have been VERY low but not trending in any one direction. (platelets are what cause your blood to clot) So the hospital wanted an endoscopy performed. Problem is that my platelets were at 32 at the time. (below 30 can be lethal) It was determined that I needed a platelet transfusion before they could do the endoscopy due to the risk of injury during the procedure. As pretty much everyone knows it is important to match blood types when doing blood (and blood product) transfusions. Not doing so can kill an individual. So they did the transfusion yesterday and then I had the endoscopy. No problems. No pain. No grogginess. All good. . . . . . until I woke up this morning and went to wash my face. MY EYES ARE YELLOW. MY FACE IS YELLOW. I am jaundiced! Now people can say "oh well you like your cold beverages" but I've been in the hospital for the past few days and have been seen by all sorts of nurses, doctors, and specialists. If I looked like this then several someones would have had something to say about it. Nope. I woke up today looking like a banana. I looked at the picture that I had taken of the platelets. Right there on the label it states: Patient ABO/Rh: B NEG Donor ABO/Rh: O POS THEY GAVE ME THE WRONG BLOOD TYPE! That can kill a person. Luckily in my case they gave me O (which is safe for everyone) but POSITIVE (which is not good for a negative person). If it was A I would be a goner. My body is attacking fragments of red blood cells mixed into the platelets which is creating bilirubin which causes the yellow skin/eye color (jaundice). I feel fine. I just look like a freak. The good news is I am seeing the hematologist at some point today so I will make sure everything (aside from my appearance) is okay with him.

Ouch. If the blood was the wrong kind, might it have had infection in it too? They’re supposed to check, but if they checked you wouldn’t have gotten the wrong blood! By the way, don’t ask me for any, I’m O+.

So on top of everything else your liver now has to work overtime and that is why you are jaundiced. That is just crazy.

That would have been a terrible shock. I'm negative something too but I've forgotten what.
