I Have a Certain Technique

Some people do. Some people don’t. I always wanted a formal garden or an English garden, but I have a special garden.
It’s a garden where if I can dig a hole without a huge rock in it, tree
roots, and patches of clay soil, I plant it. That’s Connecticut soil.
I will once again dig and dig until I can plant anything I can when we return up north. I have even used my husband’s old drill to dig tiny holes to plant my seedlings. I also create little rock circular walls, fill it with garden soil, and plant.
Photo is of a weed I planted by accident. My neighbor told me it was poisonous, so it was very hard digging and digging it out.
How’s your garden?

@DianneN - We had major works done in the garden soon after we bought the house. There were several plum trees that were sick and needed to be cut and then the roots removed. It took months before the garden was completed, but it was good during the 26 years we had the house.

That was very smart of you. We had my vegetable garden built for us and filled with good soil. It’s a raised bed and is enclosed with screens and netting to keep the deer and creatures away. My large flower garden was all woods at one time and never thought of a flower garden there. And now, we don’t want dump trucks driving over our new lawn to dump good soil there. I have had several trees removed last year and the year before, but had to use climbers to remove the huge trees. The others weren’t too tall, so they chain sawed them and transported them to their grinding truck. They were able to remove most of the stumps with their stump grinder, so now I have many other places to plant flowers. Hubs will build some raised bed areas towards the back of my garden. I will fill them with garden soil. I don’t want him lifting anything heavy anymore, so my son will help when he has the time.

Some of those weeds can look so attractive. Unfortunately, they can take over if you're not careful. Good catch to get it out of there.
My garden is still in semi hibernation although a daffodil has recently popped up. I also noticed my 2 Bradford Trees have the beginnings of blooms, so they arrive with their white flowers soon.

Yes, I wasn’t lucky to find out that plant was no good.
I heard my daffodils are blooming and my weeping cherry tree is about to blossom. Unfortunately, being in Florida, I will miss them and hope to see other blooms when we return to Connecticut April 30. I’m going to look up Bradford Trees.

@DianneN They also go by the name Cleveland Pear, an improved version of that species.
Here is a photo of mine in bloom...
Sorry about the photo angle.

@dgobucks226 That is beautiful! I know that they produce small hard pears that aren’t edible for humans. Do animals eat them?

@toniganzon That’s when I got back into gardening and thinking up things to redo and have built. Hubs wasn’t too happy, but I have more plans and objectives. He still loves me

I hope that weed did not drop any seeds lol
But good news
The plant in your image, Pennsylvania Smartweed (Persicaria pensylvanica), is generally not considered poisonous to humans and is even categorized as a wild edible by some foraging experts.
I thought it was somethong else but AI corrected me

It’s a poke weed I think. I had others, too. My neighbor is a forestry expert and her husband is a landscaper. They both, at different times told me exactly what it was, but gave me the scientific name
. My plant app also identified it.
Don’t always believe AI.

@Ineeddentures That’s why I thought it was bamboo. I will have lots of weeds to contend with when I go home.

When i lived in Pocatello my mother taught me about a weeds and one that was good to use as greens. I learned to be able to identify it. Some weeds are bad and some are good, they just grew too quickly and take over areas.
You have a great garden.

You’re right. Some weeds are indeed good as greens. However, we get our property sprayed for ticks, grubs, and also treated with fertilizers every month. Even though they are supposed to be safe for children and animals, I can’t make myself eat them.
Big sigh…. I know I will have a lot of weeds to remove when I go home.

Sadly I don't have a garden. I let my neighbors plant beautiful flowers and enjoy them with no fuss or care. My neighbor behind me has his whole deck loaded with planters filled with flowers and they are gorgeous all summer long. I sit on my deck and enjoy his garden.
This year my daughter and I said we were going to try and grow tomatoes in pots on our deck but we'll see if it actually happens.

@DianneN Haha, yes, some condos can be quite strict. At least your pots still have a purpose. Haha

That sounds like a good idea to me! Of course, I don’t have a garden, and if I could, I wouldn’t. I can barely keep myself alive, let alone a garden.
I do appreciate the time and effort others put into their gardens. My dad’s wife spends so much time in hers that my dad will start to get bossy and “order” her inside because he fears she’ll get heat stroke. The results of her work though, is quite impressive.

I can understand why you can’t garden.
I’m chuckling, because your father sounds very much like hubs. He worries that it’s too hot, too cold, too late, looks like rain, it’s about to thunder, get, get, get inside!
I’m sure her garden is glorious!

Well non existent at the moment except for a daffodil, but I am hoping to plant an herb garden and some peppers this year. Tree roots, and patches of clay soil is what I have here, but oddly, I have located some nice earth beside the driveway..Who needs potting soil?

Hubs refuses to downsize, but neither do I. I just keep thinking up things to have done.
