Time for the old joke: “it’s the plumber, he’s come to fix the sink.”
But while waiting for the plumber I will take you back 50 years to another great song from 1976. Here’s the next song on the list, and it’s another that was also on my 100 favorites list.
#4: The Rubberband Man - The Spinners
Yeah! Definitely music to make you dance without being disco.
What’s not to love about this. Songwriter Thom Bell started this song to present a positive image for his son, who was being bullied at school for being overweight (“I saw this short fat guy stretch a band between his toes”). It evolved into something else, a classic song in R&B and pop, topping the soul chart and making it to #2 on the Billboard hot 100 list.
And, as I’ve mentioned before, there’s always that use of it in the movie Stripes during the mud wrestling scene. Fun fact: the exteriors of that scene were filmed on Jefferson Street here in Louisville. None of those bars had to be “made up,” because they were all sleazy places. None of them are standing anymore: there’s a hotel and convention center there now.
So you get a good song AND movie history in one discussion!

I thought I would try and comment on at least one or two of the March ones I missed.
I think we’ve discussed this before, but in the UK we called this group “ The Detroit Spinners” because we already had a folk group called “The Spinners” and didn’t want to confuse the two. Of course now we will do just that.
I’ll try and find one of OUR Spinners songs, so you can appreciate them too. (Again if I’ve already done this!)

@FourWalls Here, for your delectation is our Spinners singing “A Long Time Ago”
Which is quite apt for your (and mine of course) birthday!

@Orson_Kart — hey, not that long ago!
(Who am I kidding?
)
We did that with The Beat here, called them “The English Beat.”
I liked that tune!

@rebelann — pretty big Bill Murray movie in the early 80s. John Larroquette played the Captain in it…said later that he was so drunk he didn’t remember making the movie. It was mandatory viewing for me because (a) it was filmed in Louisville and Fort Knox, and (b) I was in the Navy at the time.

They used it in Stripes, which put an ugly visual into my head with this song for a while.

Rubberband Man is one of my favorite upbeat tunes of that era.

I remember this song well. I didn't realize it was about the songwriter's son being bullied.

Very true. It's hard to second guess people, no matter what their role is in life.

I don’t know, it so many of them were so good at it. Especially Gladys Knight and the Pips.
