A cute baby hedgehog

When we were in France and staying in a caravan park in Availles-Limousine in our motor-home, a little girl found a baby hedgehog that seemed to be lost. The little girl was very intrigued with it and her expressions changed by the minute as she held it. Her mother seemed to know about hedgehogs and placed in a secluded place where hopefully the mother would find it. Like most young creatures, it was very cute. There are no hedgehogs in Australia but we have the spiny anteater or echidna which would be the nearest thing to a hedgehog.

The little girl is cute in your photos. I think the closest thing we have here are the little ground squirrels/chipmonks. They're really cute but it's better to keep your distance. It's okay to feed them but just scatter the food on the ground and then move away so you don't scare them. They will bite!

As far as I know, the only protection hedgehogs have is to roll in a ball. Perhaps @Fleura will tune in and tell us or @xFiacre. Or @RonRybs. I think he had one in his garden at one time.

@JudyEv You're right, rolling up is their only defence, which doesn't work well against traffic, sadly.

@JudyEv I agree with @JudyEv they mostly roll up and wait for danger to leave. Over here it is foxes, maybe the odd dog

It is really adorable. I was just watching a clip the other day of some people helping a little hedgehog that was in the water. It climbed up onto a broom, and they were able to lift it out of the water.

That's good the hedgehog had enough sense to climb on the broom. I hope this one's mother found it.

A friend of mine, a retired professor at Tennessee Tech, had a hedgehog as a pet once upon a time. They are quite cute!

@JudyEv — they are not, although there is evidence for a now-extinct species of hedgehog once being native to North America.

They're not native there though, are they?

@FourWalls And they've discovered the remains of Tasmanian devils in South Australia too - and a prehistoric wombat in caves in our state.

Almost all baby creatures are cute - except for birds with googly eyes and no feathers.

We don’t have them wild here either and aren’t allowed to own them in our state for some reason.

That seems a bit strange. They are not the sort of creature that could really become a nuisance.

We had those cute little creatures in the garden in Switzerland. When I kept the windows of the bedroom open during summer, I heard them chewing the dry cat food in the bowl downstairs.

@JudyEv - They also hiss loudly during the night. The first night I thought it was a snake, I got the torch and checked and it was the hedge hog. Later it came to my mind my Grandfather who used to say "he hiss like a hedgehog".

@LadyDuck I didn't know that about them. As far as I know our echidnas don't really m ake a noise apart from snuffling as they gobble up ants.

Indeed. Trés joli. Do they have any way of protecting themselves other than rolling in a ball? We have a Heirisson Island in the middle of Perth and apparently named after a French midshipman. Spelt differently I know but similar.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX Sorry. I meant in the USA. I can't think what it's called but maybe it's Africa I'm thinking of. No doubt the answer will come at about 2am in the morning. I swear the little search engine in my brain never sleeps! lol

Yes, I wouldn't want to pick one up without gloves. You have a spiky creature too, don't you?

I love hedgehogs. In high school, we had a bunch of college kids start coming to our church. It was hard to remember all of their names, but one guy’s hair looked just like a hedgehog. That ended up being what we referred to him when he came up in conversation. To this day, I don’t remember his name, but I know what his nickname was.

We've done that too from time to time. Given a nickname to people whose real name we couldn't remember.

Children are thrilled by the wonders of nature but we tend to get used to it over time - does not elicit the same excitement in us. Very nice picture.

That's very true and that's why I like it when we can take children with us to experience new things. You catch a bit of their sense of wonder.
