I told you the Chairman of the Board would be around in reference and in actuality this month. While I skipped him on “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” this is his song. Let’s go back half a century to one of the great easy listening classics…and a funny story.
Strangers in the Night - Frank Sinatra
This song is quintessentially Frank, right? It’s been recorded over 100 times, but “Strangers in the Night” and Frank Sinatra go hand in hand. Well…Sinatra HATED this song. He called it “a piece of [bleep]” and “the worst [bleeping] song that I have ever heard.” Sinatra went so far as to joke with Dean Martin that the song was about two gay guys in a bar.
Well, let me tell you something. For someone who thought it was a piece of excrement, Sinatra sure delivered the goods. He may have stuck that now-legendary “do be do be do” at the end to show his disdain, but (much like Elvis “deliberately” sabotaging “Blue Christmas” with the background singers) it backfired into one of Sinatra’s biggest hits. In fact, this was his final solo #1 hit (he would hit #1 again later in the 60s singing “Somethin’ Stupid” with daughter Nancy).
Oh, and that “do be do be do” part? Fred Silverman was listening to this song on a flight and decided to name a cartoon dog in its honor: Scooby Doo. If you listen to the opening of the theme song, you’ll hear a direct rip-off of “do be do be do.”
It turned out all right!

I know, it’s like how Elvis tried as hard as he could to make “Blue Christmas” horrible, and everyone LOVED it.

@FourWalls I’m with Elvis on Blue Christmas. Those background singers get on my nerves.

Do be do be do and Scooby Doo (love it). I'm familiar with both
Even though Sinatra wasn't thrilled with this song it certainly was popular.

There are quite a few songs out there that singers hate and they turned out to be hits so they had to sing them every night.

@FourWalls I have to play on many songs I don't care for. It's part of "the business." "I hear that train acomin'..." BARF.

@FourWalls I hope you enjoyed my rainbow post. No music involved, though I love Eva Cassidy's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." It was the most "vivid" rainbow I had ever seen. Now it's just raining.

I tried this one at a Karaoke night
I practised it in the garden for 3 months before the Karaoke
My neighbours were really impressed
They know all the words now
One begged me to sing Purple rain again instead as he only had two words to listen to

I’m surprised that they didn’t tell you do do the Champs’ “Tequila” at karaoke, because that only has ONE word!

Consummate professional, wasn’t he. “This song sucks, but it went to #1, so I’ll sing it every night for the fans.”

That’s okay. I’d personally rather listen to Nat “King” Cole.

Oh, my. Growing up I must have honestly heard this one a gazillion times. All the ladies in the family loved Sinatra. By the time I reached my teens, I never wanted to hear this song again.
