Going to Give up Protein Bars

United States

It's been a long time coming. The protein bars have been a crutch for me to get nutrition in because I don't eat regular meals and don't like food. It's true - I don't like food. But the protein bars have too many carbs and I'm limited as to which ones I can eat because I'm allergic to all nuts and most protein bars contain nuts or tree nuts derivatives. So I'm going to TRY to eat more real food and give up protein bars. I've got maybe a dozen bars left in the pantry that I'll eat and finish up but I won't buy anymore. At least that's the plan for now. Wish me luck. This is a BIG change from a routine that I've had for many years.

Can you get a dietician to help you with your meals? I know from trying a few protein bars here and there, the chocolate ones are a lot like regular candy bars, very sweet and definitely addicting. You don't eat enough regular food, it would help you to have at least two regular meals a day instead of only one. And yes, you do need real food. It good that you are going to try to give them up.

I'm scared. It's going to be a challenge. I've had whatever weird type of eating disorder that I have for a long time being food-averse.

@LooeyVille Yes, it will be a big challenge, and you may well have some stumbling blocks. Look back at what you have accomplished in your life--schooling, working, life's struggles that no doubt seemed insurmountable at the time. And here you are, you got past all of that. Here is another one, and you can do this. It will take some time, some trial and error, and some planning on your part. Get your doctor on board, a dietician or a nutritionist, etc. and get it going. You've mastered many things in life, this hurdle can be mastered, too.

But I'm avoiding chocolate. Only twice in over 110 days.

I know where you are coming from. I am one for a cook quick and simple meals, but sometimes I go mad and fancy cook. I keep protein bars in my backpack, so on a walk if I feel peckish I can have a little bite

I do not like a lot of them but that does not keep me from grabbing one from my stash. I need to give them up as well and concentrate on healthy foods. Good luck to both of us.

Best of luck. Maybe your therapist can help you with the eating disorder or direct you to a dietitian or nutritionist.

Good luck, but if you make up your mind to do something, you will do it. I hope that you have a specific alternative for when you would normally grab one of those bars.
