Would you believe?

So, I told you that I lost my keys... I had a spare house key but not a spare for the shed. So I went to Canadian Tire today and checked out padlocks. There was quite a selection to choose from: big ones, little ones, ones with combinations... but they were all locked up in a cabinet! I had to hunt down a floor guy to open the cabinet, and then when I made my choice he took it up to the cashier. Apparently too many were walking out the door without being paid for.

Yes, I believe that. Walmart was starting to lock up padlocks when I still worked there. People steal all kinds of things.

I guess that's why some stores are making it difficult to exit without passing a cashier.

@BarBaraPrz Some people are good at hiding things in their clothing as they leave the store.

I guess it would be easy to slip a lock into your coat or pocket and walk off.

That seemed to be what was happening before they locked them up.

And they want to lock up their ill-gotten gains.

I suppose before too much longer, anything that is smaller than a VW Beetle will be under lock and key because of shoplifting.

@JudyEv Or why they're sold in multi-packs when you only want one.

Decades ago, I read that that was why small things were put in a larger packet of some sort. I'm thinking of things like biros being individually wrapped.

People walk out the stores too often "forgetting" to pay small stuff.

Not just small stuff. I've heard of little old ladies trying to leave the store with a full grocery cart without paying.

@LadyDuck No, she was stopped. Turned out she had dementia.

Padlocks are locked up here as are spray cans of paint.

In our province cans of spray paint are locked up because they cannot be sold to minors.

Isn't that odd? People must steal them for personal use, I am not aware of any black market locks. I believe that I have seen them on the hooks, not under lock and key at dollarama.

I didn't see any at Dollarama yesterday, but I wonder how sturdy they'd be, anyway.
