No MRI for me for a fortnight - not that I need one

Following the operation on my throat, I was sent home with two cards. You can see one in the photo. I was told to carry them at all times for a fortnight, until the clips in my throat have passed through my body. It is very important that I don’t have an MRI until the clips have gone. I had no idea why this was so important but apparently MRI uses a very strong magnet, so strong that it should shift the placement of metal in your body depending on what type of metal and where it’s located. The card also says the clips are 2.35cm x 2.8mm. I had to convert those measurements to inches before it made any sense to me. So that’s almost an inch by 0.11 of an inch. This time last week I was waiting to be discharged. I can now start on soft foods rather than pure liquids. And so life moves on. The photo is mine.

I certainly didn't and I had no idea how serious it was. There was so much going on I wasn't even listening closely but Vince enlightened me.

Yes, you have to be very careful with metal around an MRI machine. The clips will pass on through? Interesting.

@LindaOHio How they attach these clips just with mirrors and tubes down your throat is beyond imagining.

@JudyEv Not into the machine, but out of your body.

I get that but it must be incredibly strong to pull someone into a machine.

Yes, the magnet can be displaced when you or anyone with metal near the MRI

Perhaps it's common knowledge but I didn't know about it.

235cms is pretty long - 92.50 inches. Every care has to be taken in terms of removing all metals before MRI scans. The magnets are so powerful.

Medical stuff is wild, but it is good to be warned and cautious. Just do not do anything that will cause you to need an MRI.

Yup, yup! I have a couple of metal adornments in my body and have to remove them before I can get an MRI scan. What was the first "soft food" you asked Vince to make for you? Did you enjoy it?

That's the very reason it's very strict inside the area where the MRI is... no wearing of accessories, cellphone and more because it might cause unexpected accident. Glad you are being informed. Hoping for your recovery, that's good take it slowly no rush.

I wasn't aware that clips remained inside of a patient after an MRI. I have a steel plate in my forehead area and I believe that set off the alarms at the airport last week when I passed through the metal detector. It must have been a very sensitive machine as it did not set off the alarms at the other airport that we flew out of.

I didn't have an MRI but at the moment I have six little clips. If I had a car accident or some other trauma, I should have the card on me so they don't give me an MRI. The clips will be gone in a week.

I'm glad you're recovering and can switch now to soft foods. I'm betting you'll be happy to eat something. Yes, those little metal clips can really be a problem if you need an MRI. When my daughter in law had surgery she had metal clips in her neck and was told the same thing.

I had no idea it was such an issue but it's a very serious one apparently.
