Sorry Sir, I'm Closed

I got in line today at Walmart. Checkout lane 22. I know that was the one because, for whatever reason, I made a note of it. I was with my mom, as Thursdays are one of the days I take mom out. There was a couple ahead of us checking out. Then two more people, one in a scooter and one with a cart, but because they were talking to each other, I knew they were together. Then it was me and mom. I stood there for at least 5 minutes. I am usually a pretty good gauge of time. My mom asked me a question, and I turned to answer her. Suddenly I heard, "Sir. Sir." I turned in the direction of the call and realized it was the cashier. "I'm closed," she said. "The people in front of you were supposed to be my last customers." I looked up and indeed the numbers 22 were dark. "I've been standing here for at least 5 minutes," I told her, "And your light was on when I got in line." "No, it wasn't," she said. Incredulously I responded, "Yeah, right." I spun the cart around and proceeded to exit lane 22 for another one, when another woman came behind me with a full cart and said, "Is she closed?" "Apparently," I told her. As I was halfway out of lane 22 and scanning for an alternative open lane I heard it called again. "Sir. Sir." I turned. "I'll take you," the cashier said. "Forget it," I said. "I've already moved on." I then proceeded two aisles over and was checked out. I didn't necessarily mean to be flippant with her. But I think I was at least justified in being a little bit irritated. Was I in the right? Or was I wrong?

It really irked me. Especially considering, I always check a lane before I enter it to make sure the light is on. It was, and I am certain of that.

@porwest True. She should have told the customer Infront of you that they were the last one

I do not know. I think she should have relented before you moved if she was going to at all.

As long as I had stood there, she should have seen me at some point. At the same time, usually the last customer is notified, and they will let someone know if someone comes into the lane. The two people ahead of me saw me too and didn't say a word.

If she had told the customer ahead of you that he was the last customer then that customer should’ve told you that she’s closed. I will be frustrated as well if I was waiting for a while at a checkout lane and then told that the lane is closed.

I would be irritated too. I haven't had an experience quite like that, but there's always worse; there's always going to an airport and hearing about delayed flights when you've got places to be, but this would definitely make me feel the same.

You were in the right. I shop at Winco it is cheaper in price than Walmart.
