Noises in the ceiling - not my ceiling, thankfully

Hitting the news last night was a story of a squatter who remained hidden in the roof-space of an Adelaide grandmother. The pensioner had been hearing noises for some months but thought she had possums in the ceiling. However, items were going missing and there were other strange happenings such as the toilet seat being left up. Despite repeated calls to the Housing Trust, no-one was sent to investigate. Eventually there was a loud thump when the guy fell heavily and he started swearing. She was too afraid to call the police at the time as she thought whoever it was would come down. Later, she did call the police who found a makeshift bed, crockery, tins of food, drugs and shoes in the ceiling. Some people are very brazen. The photo is mine.

Poor pensioner, she had all reasons to be scared. Too often the police does not listen. If you hear noises, there is always a reason.

@JudyEv - I thought it was the police. Poor woman, she was imagining nothing.

It was the housing people who paid no attention but made her feel like she was imagining things.

Lucky he didn't fall through the ceiling, that would have given her a surprise!

She said her cat was acting more and more distressed. I suppose he didn't like strangers in the night either.

@JudyEv I've heard stories like this before, especially from the USA where houses are so much bigger, about strangers living in attics and closets undetected. What I always wonder is, what do they do all day?

We hear/read stories about people sneaking into somebody's attic space and living there quietly and stealing from the person who owns the house until something happens that outs them to the homeowner. I'm glad she finally called the police. That would have had me crawling up into the attic space just to see what was making the weird noises. (Our attic can only be accessed through a locked panel in my bedroom closet.)

This guy was dropping down through the manhole while she was asleep. He was very cheeky to be doing this.

@JudyEv Yeah, that's what usually happens. They try to stay quiet while the homeowner is there and come down when they go out or fall asleep. One guy here kept finding things missing so he installed a security camera and caught a woman climbing out of his attic, eating food from his fridge, peeing in his sink and climbing back into the attic when she heard him moving around. Of course, with the evidence, he called the police.

Damn, that's pretty bold. And he got careless.

He did indeed. There is very little room in our ceiling space for even a legitimate person.

Good gracious. It's good that the guy did not do anything bad to the pensioner
