Songs Mentioning the Beatles: Life in a Northern Town

Howdy from an unusual place: Cracker Barrel! I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn last night, and their breakfasts aren’t included with the room rate. (Weird about how various hotels within a franchise chain vary on things like that, but that’s for another discussion.) It’s time for another song that references the Beatles! At least I have one that everyone can sing along with, (on the chorus, if nowhere else)!
Life in a Northern Town - The Dream Academy
Most people think, “That has lyrics other than ‘hey ma ma ma, yeah’?”
Well, at least everyone can sing along with that part!
This nostalgic look back at the good old days that weren’t all that good in a dying town (inspired by the decline of the shipping industry in England). Think of it as the British version of Billy Joel’s “Allentown.”
Here’s an interesting note: co-writer/lead singer Nick Laird-Clowes said that he was trying to invoke the style of the late Nick Drake, a British singer/songwriter who died much too young. And another interesting note: Paul Simon joked with Laird-Clowes about whether the title would be “Ah, Hey Ma Ma Ma Ma, Yeah” or not. Laird-Clowes bounced a couple of title ideas off Simon before settling on the title we know and love today.
And this gets my vote for one of the biggest rock hits to feature an oboe!
(Yeah, it may be the only one, but still….)

Written by Gilbert Gabriel and Nick Laird-Clowes

From The Dream Academy, 1985

I’m sure it was a mistake that Paul Simon joked.

We usually stay in Best Westerns and they're the same way. Some have a full kitchen and cook meals and some serve a continental breakfast or nothing at all.

Best Westerns are the best budget brand available, period. Motel 6 is so bad I wonder if I’m getting bedbugs just driving past one.

@FourWalls I worked at a Best Western for years in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. I was the overnight clerk. I slept from midnight to 6 am but had to get up and take care of customers if they arrived during those hours.
Eww! My first wife and I walked away from one motel when we saw live bugs in the bed...
Thankfully, before we got into it!

I’m a little surprised because it was an international hit. Oh, well, we’ll try again tomorrow!

I’m not familiar with “Allentown”, so I’ll have to check that one out.
Life in a Northern Town was a minor hit over here. Still gets played a lot and not a bad tune.

@FourWalls Oh right. Our last steel production plants were owned by Tata, an Indian company. The business was going under, so I believe it is in the process of being nationalised. With all the uncertainty in the world, the powers that be have decided we need to make our own steel. I agree.

Not musically, but “Allentown” is about the disintegration of the what was once called “the Steel Belt” in America (now sadly known as the Rust Belt).

You’re so right. There are a lot of other music styles in this song that aren’t near rock and roll, but it all works!

They probably wouldn’t have left that in the video if it had happened!

@FourWalls I caught my hair in a wringer on an old-style washing machine once. Luckily I was able to hit the handle and stop it doing any damage - except to my pride. That took a bit of a hit. lol

We played the hell out of this on the station when it came out! Very good album! I liked "The Love Parade" even better.

Like so many other acts, they had great music but got relegated to one song. Same with A Flock of Seagulls, I think “Space Age Love Song” blows “I Ran” out of the water, but what got played.

@teamfreak16 — I saw them open for The Police in ‘82. They were excellent, definitely held the audience’s attention!

@FourWalls - "Space Age Love Song" was way better. Hell, so was "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You.)"

I’m betting you won’t know a lot of these. Which is normal for me.
