Oranges, but no lemons

MyLotter Jim (@Ineeddentures) wrote asking if members liked oranges. The very next day, we were given a bagful of big, sweet oranges. We’ve been buying mandarins as they are easier to peel and are Vince’s preferred fruit. They are also good for Type 2 diabetics. It’s left to me to eat the oranges and I’m enjoying one a day. I remember getting hives as a child from eating too many so I won’t make that mistake this time. It’s hard to find acceptable snacks for diabetics. By the way, have you ever had brandied oranges? They’re pretty nice, too.

I like oranges, but they are kind of a hassle. And as with the other fruits, I just can't eat them fast enough for some reason. I don't want to go to the store just to buy one or two so they don't go bad.

You can get hives from eating to many oranges. Gonna Need my whisky bottle, it cures all kinds of nonsense, Oh you diabetic, that makes more sense and I hope they find something where you can eat oranges.

I'm not diabetic but my husband is. It's Type 2 so he doesn't need insulin. He controls it with tablets and diet.

Oranges are so good! I don’t know why, but I haven’t had one in years. I think I’ll put that on my grocery list. Thanks, Judy!

When I was young, in Italy we had those beautiful oranges from Sicily that were for eating and not juicing. You peeled them as easy as you do the mandarins and they were so good. I wonder where those beautiful oranges have gone now. There was a man who came to Milan from Sicily every winter to bring those fresh oranges. I remember Dad buying two very large crates full of them and they lasted the whole winter.

We were warned that these are hard to peel and don't last long. But they are sweet and juicy.

@JudyEv Most of the oranges sold now are hard to peel, but the taste is good.

I tend to not eat them very often. Then when I do have a really good one I wonder why I don't eat more of them!

If they good, does it help you feel better? I am ignorant on diabetics. My one friend had that but it was all shots with her. She could literally die if she did not get her shots.

@Fleura Very tricky then. I think they need to educate people on this they say its becoming more common.

@crossbones27 Although oranges contain sugar, and diabetics need to be careful to avoid spikes in blood sugar, oranges actually have a low glycaemic index and are a good source of fibre and other nutrients, so they can be enjoyed in moderation by people with diabetes.
