Someone accurately predicted this song would show up. It’s easy to see why this one is a shoo-in: it’s a comedic tune, and it mentions the Beatles in the title. So congratulations, @mininifty you win the psychic award. Here’s today’s song. Pop Hates the Beatles - Allan Sherman Allan Sherman was popular in his day, yet he hasn’t remained in most people’s memories. (Mine excluded because I love parodies.) His best-known song was “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah (A Letter From Camp).” The first thing I saw him do was “Strange Things in My Soup” on David Frost’s talk show in the late 60s/early 70s. That was a spoof of “Strangers in the Night.” He took a slap at Sinatra and Jackie Gleason with the album title For Swingin’ Livers Only! (since Gleason had an orchestral album called Music for Lovers Only and Sinatra had one called Music for Swingin’ Lovers). The song, however, is aimed right at the Beatles. The final line, about sending the Beatles to a barber, is indicative of what a lot of parents didn’t like about the Beatles: they had (gasp) LONG HAIR. Yeah, never mind all those early US presidents that had something beyond the standard boot camp haircut (or wigs that made it look like they had longer hair). Other than that, most of the parental complaints about the lads from Liverpool were identical to what they said about Elvis. Or Sinatra before him. Allan Sherman died very young, at the age of 48, from heart problems. He’d been mostly forgotten even at the time of his death (in 1973). He hasn’t been forgotten by those who like a laugh. Pop Hates the Beatles Based on “Pop Goes the Weasel” Written by Allan Sherman and Lou Busch Recorded by Allan Sherman From For Swingin’ Livers Only!, 1964 BEATLE REFERENCE LYRICS: the entire song Ringo is the one with the drum:

I don’t remember this. But I do remember “ Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah ” if that counts!

So THAT’S where my dad heard the song, “Hello Muddah Hello Faddah”. I always wondered when he sang it where it came from.

Now you know! And the music is based on part of “Dance of the Hours” from La Gioconda. Here’s Sherman singing “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.”

Dr. Demento did his best to keep Mr. Sherman's memory alive!

God bless Dr. Demento. Thanks to him I heard the Fools’ “Psycho Chicken,” which I never would have heard otherwise.

I love Allan Sherman. This song was played very recently by Les Ross, a DJ on Boom Radio, for the comedy song slot on his Sunday afternoon show. Les himself is quite the comedian too and I try to listen to his show every week. Allan Sherman, gone but not forgotten. By me anyway.

@FourWalls They obviously don’t share our sense of humour. My two favourites of his are: Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah (A Letter From Camp) which just conjures up the feelings of a young person cooped up indoors when it’s raining, and how it’s quickly forgotten about when the sun comes out. It’s fantastic The Mexican Hat Dance is my other favourite. Again, the lyrics are just brilliant. Yes, it’s crazy, but I love it.

It’s pretty sad that Allan’s been so forgotten. He was hilarious.

That’s a fun bit of music history ?? I always find it interesting how comedy songs like that can capture a very specific moment in time especially when they’re reacting to something as huge as Beatlemania.

Not to mention how insanely funny it sounds about parents’ complaints NOW, after the rest of the 60s came along.

Alan Sherman was never forgotten by the fans of the best radio DJ of them all, Dr. Demento! His show just happened to start in the early 70s, and he just retired this past October! Talk about a long-running show, and Alan Sherman records were always part of it!

@FourWalls Luckily the people who run TheFump .com are doing their top-notch best to preserve the legacy by continuing to have the comedy podcast feed, and they have Dr. Demento's approval because he used to talk about the podcast feed and play songs from it all the time, 2007-2025. Unfortunately that podcast couldn't get the big-shots like "Weird Al" Yankovic, but at least they got the ones that are only Demento-famous and not famous outside that world, like Luke Ski, Devo Spice, even Lemon Demon of Ultimate Showdown fame.
