Working outdoors

I love to be outside. On a nice day if something keeps me indoors I’m constantly looking out of the window wishing I was out there. Well the joy of working at home on my laptop is that I can often be out there even when I have desk work to do. My partner was teasing me about it, saying ‘Oh look at you with your fancy garden desk’ – but what’s the point of having a lovely garden if you can’t take time to enjoy it? Otherwise it’s just another never-ending source of jobs to do! So here’s my morning workspace, at our rather wobbly old table under the grapevine. All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2026.

How lovely to be able to work outside especially in the current weather we are having.

I agree with you, what is the sense of having a lovely garden if you cannot enjoy it. You have created a very inviting space here, enjoy it completely while the warmth of the season is here.

That is a nice cozy place to have your work done. I guess that place has a nice working temperature to comfortably stay there for long. I wish i could do that in my place but our climate is very much different from yours that working in that kind of place can be very uncomfortable because of the hot and humid climate we have in our place.

Yes you are right, here it is rare for it to be uncomfortably hot, in the summer we usually have to make the most of warm days!

@Fleura What’s comfortable in your place is the opposite for us. We seek out cooler spots to escape the heat, while you cherish warm days because most of the year there’s a much colder climate where you are.

You really have a nice work spot out there. I love being by the window or in front of the window. No matter how stressful work or my day is as long as I have the glimpse what is outside, I will definitely feel recharged. Your garden looks great, by the way. Enjoy your view and happy working.

Thank you. It looks very green there (apart from the purple clematis flowers in the corner) but the rest of the garden that I'm looking out on is rather more colourful!

And what keeps you working when you can spend your time watching the creatures and plants in your garden? I wouldn't get any work done at all if I was outside.

That is a problem. I'm constantly jumping up to look at things, or watching the birds with binoculars, or photographing the spiders that walk around the table...

@Fleura Yup! Exactly what I mean! No work gets done outside here, either.

Thank you - but the snag is I am constantly watching what's going on and not concentrating! Even just photographing spiders walking around the table and things like that!!

If you work outside on a laptop, you have to have the light just where you want it. I never seem to be able to get the light where I want it. That looks a lovely spot to sit.

I can't imagine not working. I mean if I wasn't doing work of one sort I'd be doing some other sort, or volunteering.

I completely understand that! If the weather is nice, it almost feels wrong to stay indoors all day staring at four walls when there’s fresh air and sunshine outside.

That’s a lovely working space. I do the same in my balcony full of flowers when the sun is shining.
