An unexpected expense

Recently, I was taking a shower and noticed the water was very cold and when I tried to make it a bit warmer, the temperature wouldn’t change. I thought maybe the water heater didn’t fill up yet. I went to the HVAC room to check it out and noticed that the light that usually blinks on the water heater wasn’t blinking. My realtor came with his friend to look at it. Thought maybe the pilot had gone out. They tried to ignite it but nothing happened. They gave me a number of a guy that deals with water heaters and told me to give him a call. He came with another guy and, after examining it, he let me know that the water heater is dead and needs to be replaced. The next day they came to remove the old water heater and install a new one. It turned out that there is not enough room to get the water heater in and out of the HVAC room. The only way to be able to do this was to cut out the wall in the back of a small closet next to the HVAC room. After they did that, it turned out that there are copper water pipes going through there, along with some wooden planks. They had to cut one of the wooden planks. And they also had to cut the pipes, which had to be welded back together after they installed the new water heater. They charged $2100 for all this. They did not put the wall back so that meant I had to find someone else to put the wall back. The realtor came back with his friend and his friend did it. The wall is back up, but his friend will come back to make it look nicer. I am not sure how much he’s going to charge but I think my mom said $320.

I need my water heater replaced, but my apartment manager is too cheap to replace it. So, I’ve taken cold showers for 12 years.

Wow! That is terrible. How do you deal with that in the winter? I don’t shower with hot water, but I like it warm when it’s cold outside.

Ghee willickers. If it's not one thing it's something else for you. I bet you'll be glad to get out from under that house.

I hate that my mom has to spend all this money. Especially after spending a lot on renovations.

@celticeagle the water heater was replaced by my parents not that long ago. I guess the shelf life is less than it used to be. But it can also be because we never drained the water heater and the guy said you’re supposed to do it once a year. Not sure if doing that makes it last longer or not.

I prefer cool water. Now that the water heater is working it seems the cold water is not as cold anymore.

It's like opening a can of worms when you start replacing things in older houses.

Yes. I knew they would have to cut out the wall, but I forgot that there are pipes there.

Crikey, you’re not having much luck with your property right now. Bad enough that you’ve had to replace the water heater without having to cut a hole in the wall to get it out. Was the room built around the heater? It sounds a right palaver!

The closet was built in front of the HVAC room and I have no idea why.

So many fittings, equipment, gadgets, nowadays and we are in for nasty surprises. Normally, the advice is to replace with new. It is sort of a bolt from the blue but that is the way it is.

I hate unexpected expenses like that. I am always prepared for them financially. But never mentally.

While my mom can afford to replace the water heater, it still sucks that she had to.
