So long, Silk!

So I ordered groceries, and had them delivered yesterday morning. I thought they’d all been put up; that was at 7am. At 6:15pm I walked by my front door, and noticed a bag that had kind of fallen behind the credenza. Inside the bag was a 2 qt. carton of soy milk. Uh-oh. I texted my sister, asking if it was okay to drink it. She said absolutely not. I felt a little sick. Five dollars down the drain. You might think, why are you even buying soy milk in the first place? Well, my doctor told me to get more protein in my diet when my weight loss stalled. I did, and I lost ten more pounds. But I had started getting my protein with 2% milk. My primary care said to switch to soy milk. Thus, this Silk soy milk. And if that seems silly to feel bad about wasting five bucks, then congratulations, you have enough money. Not that this will break me. I am very blessed. But, it’s still waste. What is the last thing you accidentally wasted?

If the carton was sealed, I don't see how it would spoil by being left out all day. I just had a glass of it myself (mine, not yours). I started drinking it to get me through menopause.

I was told it has to stay really cold. I’d love to be wrong because I didn’t throw it out yet.

@BarBaraPrz Marie said it isn’t any good after two hours; since she taught people food safety I guess I should listen.

If it sat out more than two hours it is not safe. Please don’t take a chance! I taught food safety and sanitation classes for years. Food poisoning is so miserable!!

@AmbiePam I was on a work trip once years ago for a week. We had a snowstorm and the only place to eat nearby was a Taco Bell. I walked to it and bought some dinner. Food poisoning hit so hard. The maid found me on the floor by the bed the next morning. I was too weak to get up!! Spent two days in the hospital in Indianapolis. All I can say is, when in doubt if a food is safe, don’t take a chance!! It was so miserable.

@MarieCoyle That’s awful! My mom and I got food poisoning from Long John Silver’s once. My mom kept passing out, and I was too weak to check on her, so I’d bang on the wall to alert my dad to go pick my mom off the floor in the bathroom. It was terrible.

Often fresh produce that I buy but do not use fast enough. I hate it. I hate to throw food out. I hate to waste money.

That's a shame. Waste is waste. I don't recall the last time we wasted any food. I am thinking off and on about the refrigerator. We have been in this apartment for 20+ years, and I think maintenance has checked it once. If that went, we'd be in trouble. It is usually packed with milk (whole cows) and stuff in the freezer.

I remember my fridge went out one winter, but I just stuck the little food I had out my front door, and that kept it cold enough until they pulled in another fridge from an empty apartment.

That's frustrating, especially when groceries aren't cheap. Better to be safe than risk getting sick

If the carton is still sealed, I think you can still consume it, but if the milk has already spilled, your sister is right. It’s safer not to drink it since the $5 can be replaced, but your health is far more valuable than the money you spent. Another option is to return it and explain that it wasn’t placed properly on your front door, causing it to fall, and ask for a replacement. Of course, you’d need to prove to the store that it was the delivery man's fault.

That's weird most of those plant based milk have less protein than regular milk. Maybe soy milk is the exception. I do things like that. I left some nuggets out one day..but I decided I didn't like them anyway. They didn't have a very good flavor.

Nothing. I am very careful with the food i can afford and if there is a little something left over, my friend the opossum gets it at night.

@AmbiePam I’m always having to throw out stuff because it comes in too big a can and I don’t use the rest soon enough. Hate that.

There was another one that I used to drink because my body processes, soy milk and almond milk and hemp milk better than it does regular milk, which I can have regular milk like in a recipe here as part of something, but if I do regular milk by itself, my body freaks out, but that would make me sick to five dollars down the drain he had no thank you

What a shame, I am sorry that the bag with the milk in it was missed. I hate to waste food too, but best not to ingest potentially spoiled food.

I am not sure about that but if it is hot and has been out for a while, I would rather not take the risk

Some time ago, a small pack of smoked salmon got overlooked and spent the night in the carry bag. I threw that out but it hurt as it's one of the more expensive items that we very occasionally buy.

Oh yeah, I feel you. I had a salmon dinner I forgot about last year I overlooked, and it was ruined before I noticed it.
