Solar Eclipse UK Edition

This was my most favourite photo among the dozens I took of yesterday’s partial eclipse in the UK. So happy to have witnessed a rare moment of the moon taking a bite of the sun. There’s something magical about watching the daylight change during an eclipse. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking some or all of the Sun’s light. This 12 August 2026 eclipse was especially spectacular, with much of the UK experiencing a very deep partial eclipse, while parts of the world saw totality. This one will always have a special place in my photo collection.

I did not watch, I could not find my glasses and I was concerned for my retina.

I did have a bit of eye pain after the watch session. I didn’t have glasses.

@flapiz I know that watching without glasses could damage the retina.

There is like an eclipse calendar online maybe the next one would be visible to where you are.

It was only over the north Atlantic starting in northern Greenland and ending in southern Spain I think at sunset.

@Fleura I am okay. I did not stare at it for prolonged periods. But I did hear a lot of people went to the emergency department after watching the eclipse. They probably stared at it too much without pause.

@flapiz That's not good. Some people have permanent eye damage after watching the eclipse last time 9 years ago. Hope you are OK.

Nice photo Glad you enjoyed the experience We didn't see it It was far too cloudy It was almost a total eclipse really though, didn't some in the UK witness 97% coverage?

It was 80-90 coverage. Did you hear the influx of patients it send on A&E for eyes hurting?

Yeah that apparently is called a lens flare. All of my photos had it. While some cameras produce 2 reflections making it look like 3 suns.

That's an amazing photo. Well done for capturing such a special moment. No wonder prehistoric folk thought the world was coming to an end when an eclipse happened.

If it was a total one I too would think the world was ending. In the Philippines when eclipse happens old folklore would say a big snake in the sky ate the sun.

@flapiz I wonder what story our aborigines have for an eclipse.
