This Seems Weird

So I was going to go to my dad’s after church Sunday afternoon since I hadn’t seen him in two weeks, but while he told me that was fine, he wanted me to be aware an elderly man from their church would be staying with he and Diana for a few days. He’s an 85 year old gentleman who can take care of himself, but can’t live by himself as his health is precarious enough to where he could easily have a fall. So his daughter and son-in-law wanted to have an anniversary trip and they needed someone to care for Clyde. My dad and Diana volunteered to let him stay at their house until Tuesday (today) when the trip would be over. So, yesterday when I saw my dad to go to the dentist (they wanted to go over the bill with him too) I asked where Clyde’s daughter and SIL had gone on their anniversary trip.
He got a look on his face, and said, “Nowhere.” It turned out their anniversary trip was staying at their own house by themselves, without Clyde. I thought that was the weirdest thing. To my knowledge, they don’t have money problems, they just think differently. I also kind of wonder if Clyde minded being sent off for a few days so they could be alone at their own house. Going away is one thing, but at their own house? It seemed weird.
Incidentally, I met Clyde yesterday, and he seemed like a very elegant gentleman.

It’s understandable. People who have the burden of caring for a loved one need a break from the stress of that every now and then.

@AmbiePam — my guess would be “Hey, Dad, we need a break from you” wouldn’t sound good, and might give him the wrong impression.

Needed a break I guess. Watching a few episodes of King of Queens might give you insight into why someone would want a break,,however, I am sure Clyde is no Arthur Spooner.
. I am sure my mom could use a break from my dad sometimes.

Is it possible that they may have not had the money to go anywhere? I don’t see that lying about it is really the right thing to do, but maybe they did just need a break and didn’t want to hurt Clyde’s feelings?

I hope it worked out for everyone and that Clyde didn't mind spending time at your dads house. I can kind of understand the couple who just needed a break and stayed home. Would I do that? probably not but having taken are of my mom for so many years it got exhausting at times.

But I get needing a break. After caring for my mom I’m a big believer in getting a break if you can.

@JESSY3236 So do I. My late mother had dementia, and we would have loved to have a break. Clyde doesn’t have dementia, but you know what I mean.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX Well, she had dementia, and no one really knew how to deal with her, but maybe I should have said tough for them and left her with someone anyway!

If I was Clyde I would be very upset by that. It just doesn't sit right with me that they would stay at home and not go away.

It was their anniversary, that's all. They need time for themselves. Maybe they don't want Clyde to be an unfortunately third wheel. Seeing them together might make 85 yr old man question his life choices.
