Move Over Summer

Autumn is in the air. Yes, the cooler weather, and beautiful, colourful time of the year has arrived. Half of the nights over the course of this past week have been cool, and daytime temperatures have been dry and either overcast or sunny. but we are starting to see the colour changes in the leaves on the trees. It is always so subtle at first, sometimes, as early as late August, but growing as we go through September. We will peak in October. I am reminded of this when I look at my autumn splendor coming out in bloom, behind my lovely summer petunias. The petunias have less blooms on them every day, I see this when I deadhead them. The fall equinox is on September 22nd this year, are you looking forward to it? ~Photo is mine

Yeah, but with winter comes Christmas, and I know how much you love that season. I dread summer like you dread winter I think. Our Thanksgiving is within less than a month already, love this time of the year. I'm looking forward to apple picking, going out to the pumpkin patch and a nice turkey meal for Thanksgiving. We're coming up on my most favorite month of the year.

@wolfgirl569 I always thought that your Thanksgiving holiday is too close to Christmas, past when the fall harvest finishes. You could never enjoy Christmas away without Adeline.

I know that we are sooner to cool down as well as warm up in the spring. The skies here are beautiful and so autumn-like already.

Beautiful flowers. Our nights are getting cooler and the days are still hot just not as hot as in August.

I didn't notice any kool weather in August at all but then, as you know, we generally have really hot weather here @Juliaacv Whats really surprising is that we've been actually humid and getting a number of thunderstorms mostly at night. I'm not used to humidity

@rebelann My city is tucked in the middle of the Great Lakes, and being surrounded by water, we tend to have alot of moisture in our air. When weather crosses a lake, it picks up moisture and then quite often dumps it when it arrives over land. That happens in the winter months as well. Snow squalls off of the lakes are not something that you want to hear in the weather forecast.

Thank you, petunias reseed so easily and do well in areas that get full sun, which is what this gets. The end of august already we were feeling the evenings getting a bit cooler. The sunrises and sunsets have really changed.

I would gladly give you the hottest days in a year in exchange for your coldest ones. Too bad life isn't like that though.

Love this time of year honestly, the leaves changing always sneaks up on you. Your petunias hanging on while the autumn stuff blooms behind them sounds so pretty. Yes definitely looking forward to the equinox, feels like the real start of fall to me.

I love autumn more than any other season. I grew up on a farm, and to see the crops come to harvest after the planting, cultivating and caring that went on for the seasons beforehand is amazing. I was married in the fall, our son was born on the autumn equinox that year which was the 21st that year.

We don't have much of a Fall here in the deep south. I would love to make a trip to the mountains though. It's my favorite time to visit!

We transition to all 4 seasons. That's why you probably laugh when I complain about a heatwave of a week's time-you are used to that. But then again, I complain when there is a severe cold snap lasting just as long. But autumn, the foods that are in season, apples, pears, squash, cauliflower and pumpkins are so nice to enjoy fresh. The apples that are in season in October are usually winter pack apples, meaning that the orchards will store them and sell them fresh during the winter months. It is like a breath of freshness in the coldest time of the year for us.

You love Petunias? It looks lovely but I don't like the meaning of that flower, it means anger/ resentment.

@Juliaacv You know the movie, kate and leopold? That's where I got interested in knowing flowers. Begonias and Petunias, though they look pretty, a man should not give it to the woman they love. Because Petunia means anger, while Begonia means danger. amaryllis was the flower recommended by leofold to kate's brother; it means splendid beauty... the flower does not look nice, but the meaning will surely make a girl so special.

I do love the petunia flower, I was not aware of the meaning of the word, and I was not able to find it when I just did a quick search online. I think that the two are unrelated.

They’re saying that the temperature change is going to come in right on time, just like it did last year. It’s in the mid-90s (35C) today, but down to 70 (21C) Tuesday.

That's quite a huge jump down in temperatures. But from what I understand, many will be relieved to enjoy some coolness. I read that you are leaving for a retreat, savour your time, and realize that you will be missed.

The nights are cool as well as the mornings, but the sun is still very hot. I enjoy these late days of summer and I hope for a long and warm autumn.

I love the cool nights and mornings but they have been a little too cool actually. The other night it got down to only 13C, and it took a while for the warm up to occur the following day. I feel like our autumn is going by quickly already, but I hope that it slows down. I did get a new zipper put into my winter coat, but I do not want to have to wear it just yet. The squash and pumpkins are no where ready yet, so we have plenty of time for warm days to allow them to ripen, along with the field corn and the soyabeans standing in the fields.

@LadyDuck You are still very warm, we get into the mid 20's by mid day on most days, but it is a short lived temperature. I cannot go outside without a sweater on.

@Juliaacv - The past night it got down to 19 C, that is still warm enough to enjoy keeping the window open. Right now, 14:10 pm, the temperature is 24 C tomorrow will be warmer. I still wear summer clothing.

What a beautiful photo you've taken there. It just gladdens my heart. I've just planted purple and white petunias. I might write about them soon.

Oh thank you. I will tell you a little secret about petunias. When you deadhead them, you can put them into some dirt, and they will reseed next year. I found that out quite by coincidence this year and ran it by @wolfgirl who answered alot of my questions on the topic and helped steer me to replanting them successfully in a planter this year where they bloomed and thrived. I look forward to your post on petunias.
