Another 'big thing for our state

Australia has another ‘big thing’ and it’s situated in Moora, a small town in Western Australia. This time it’s a pair of endangered Carnaby’s black cockatoos. A public group has been raising funds for the sculpture for seven years and nearly gave up on the plan several times. A retired truck-driver gave his time, and truck, to drive to the Queensland on the other side of the country to bring back the 11.5 metre (37.8 feet) high birds. Once at the site they were assembled and lifted onto a ‘branch’. Moora conservationist, 84-year-old Wally Kerkhoff, has been involved in building and installing nesting hollows for the birds for more than 40 years. The birds breed in the area between July and February in the hollows of salmon and wandoo gums (eucalypts). Carnaby cockatoos are one of two species of white-tailed black cockatoos. There are some great photos on the article but I can’t show them here. Instead, you get one of my photos. They look so beautiful in the real pictures! I’m glad someone is taking the time to do something so big for them.

I'd love to see a real one in one of my few trees. Oh well, I'll have to make do with the mourning doves we have here

So nice to hear about those who put their heart and soul to nurture nature. I always look in wonder at nature's variety with life present everywhere.

As a rare species they have to be conserved. I have never seen one.

I wonder what the real birds are going to think of the huge ones? ETA - I just went to see the article and saw the pictures of cockatoos sitting on them, lol

Seven years of fundraising and they almost gave up a few times, that makes the finish feel even better. Love that a retired truck driver gave his time and his truck to bring the birds all the way across the country. Good to see a sculpture helping people care about the cockatoos.
