Do You Like to Walk along the River?

I love to walk along the river! - Any river at all is fine, but this is "my" river, where i most love to walk. There is a lovely sidewalk almost a mile long with the river on one side and many lovely resorts/casinos on the other. It is not necessary to pack a lunch when going for a long walk or lingering here, because there are nice restaurants all along the way, everything from snacks and fast food to fine dining.

I like to walk along any river at all, but my favorite places to go are those where there is a bit of civilization on one side and a feeling of being alone on the other. I like to stand between town and country, so to speak. That way one has all the urban conveniences, but can, at the same time enjoy the pleasant calm influence of nature. I took this photo while walking along "my" river, that is, the one that runs past my home. I love the river! Even when I'm not looking at it, I know that it is there. To me it is like a living friend. Walking is good exercise, but walking along the river is like taking a mini-vacation. Every time I come here is special. If you look closely at the photo I took of one of my favorite places to walk, you will see a small boat. It is called a water taxi, and these go up and down the river all day, taking tourists from one resort to another. I will never get tired of watching the water taxi glide past. What about you? Do you like to walk on the beach along the ocean, getting your bare feet in the sand? Or would you prefer hiking shoes and a wild forest with no path? How about a river like mine, with a paved sidewalk and little boats to remind you that there is a nice restaurant right around the corner? Do you think walking along the river is a good exercise? Please share your experiences!

Ah Drannhh, taking a vacation. Haven't done that in three years now. It's been work and more work everyday. Corporate life is really getting me down these days. The thoughts of a walk along the river sounds good even as i'm writing now. In fact anything but work sounds good, haha. Watching the sunset on a beach, gazing at the clouds; even looking at the stars sounds good too. The only 'scenery' i see everyday is buildings, factories, cars (and traffic jams, of course), and people inside their cars. I think walking along the river is good exercise not only for the body but also the mind. You are lucky to live close to nature. For me, the closest thing to nature is a park which would take a 20 minutes drive from home. Haven't been there in months. Maybe i should go there this weekend with my mother for a walk and a little talk. Hmm, experience of nature? Well, i remember a long time ago my company organized a trip to one of the local beaches. It was the months leading to the end of the year, where the monsoon season was about to start, if memory served me right. Me and a few friends and colleagues were sitting on the sand watching the sky above and trying to figure out the stars and the constellation they were in. The night was cool as the wind blows from the sea. And in the darkness, amidst lights from the nearby restaurant, the whole sky opened up before our eyes. That was the first time i had seen so many stars lighting up the sky with no obstruction blocking my view. They looked so near. It was beautiful. I do not know how they felt but i would guessed they felt the same. We all felt so small that night and it was a great feeling.

I had already make arrangement for that with my wife. I would always remember the stories she told me, especially the ones about her younger days. Thanks for your encouragement. Maybe i will have the opportunity to see the sky at night again. Only this time i'll bring my wife. Hmm, you had decided not to use your lovely avatar.

Removing the avatar was not my decision! It went away by itself. I will put a sad kitty that I drew in its place until I find out what happened to my own portrait. Thanks for noticing. I hope you get to see the stars again soon.

By all means take your mother to the park for an outing. She will cherish and remember your act of kindness for the rest of her life. If you are lucky, too, she will tell you stories that one day when she is gone, you will treasure in your heart. You will be so glad you took an opportunity to spend this time away from the job. The longest I ever worked without a vacation was over 10 years. That was too long. In addition to my regular job, I was doing some free-lance writing and had to take a day off from work to go to my other job. The publisher's office where my short meeting was held was near a famous beach so I decided not to go back to work at all that day. In fact, my husband decided to take a day off from his job and go with me. It was wonderful! We walked on the beach and ate at a nice restaurant. Holding hands and looking out over the water, we promised each other that rich or poor we would never again go that long without a vacation. We bought a little vacation home way out in the desert, where the stars are big in the sky almost every night just as you describe them in your memories. Now this is our home.

I was born in Scotland, and grew up living alongside the River Tweed; my brothers and I spent hours paddling in the shallow bits of it, catching tiny fish and taking them home to our mother! So yes, I love walking alongside a river, it brings back lovely memories for me. However, I now live in Australia and love to walk along the beach, paddling in the ocean, and watching my dogs enjoy dodging the surf! I tend to do a lot of thinking doing this, and find it peaceful and comforting.

Thanks drannhh. I guess, looking back over my life, I have enjoyed the best of both worlds, and have experienced a lot of things that have enriched my life to the full. But even now, I am still experiencing new things, so I haven't finished yet! I love life!

Abbey, if I didn't already love the name my own Colorado river which means "red" I would want it to be called "Tweed" in part because it is one letter away from "weed." Tweed is such a lovely name. I can just see distinguished Scottish ancestors walking along the river wearing Tweed jackets. You certain seem to have enjoyed now and in times past the best of all worlds.

I love walking by the river, I definitely love the sea more than the hills. Walking along the river would makes me feel so relaxed. I think it's an inner calmness that it brings *smiles*. Around here, I would go to the beaches from time to time to get my feet into the sand and stare at the sea thinking about nothing. It's really a good experience for the mind and soul!

Oh you are so lucky to grow up so close to Mother Nature. Well, all we have here are concrete! Anyway, we do have a few beaches but those are usually packed with people during summer time and you see more people than sand *laughs*. Usually when I need to have that calmness in life, I would go at night or during autumn or winter, just get myself lost in the thoughts. It's interesting how Mother Nature could comfort a restless soul sometimes *smiles*. Oh yea? You can see me staring at the sea? Haha.

I like to go barefoot in the sand, too, but I grew up along the river and used to go out on my little boat, so the river is very special to me. I can just see you staring at the sea!

Hello drannhh. I love to walk along the river as well. I love the feelingn to see the scenes on the river. The river can always make me feel very happy when I see it. It is some kind of pleasure to have the chance to walk along the river as I don't usually have the chance to do so.

Isn't it just something how every time you look at it the river seems different? It is not just a thing, but a living, growing, changing, organism, so to speak. It makes me happy to see it, too, even just a picture of it.

I love to walk by the river too! In fact, at any time of the year, we usually go one of the places here in the Philippines to visit our relatives... they live by the river! and we usually walk along the river banks almost every morning when we are there... :P

How wonderful. Our river has nice fish to look at and ducks. The last time I took my camera there were tiny little fuzzy ducklings swimming along with their mum and dad. We are right on the river, but some days we do not walk over to look at it. Silly us! We should go every day, too.

Sometimes, you have to walk along a polluted river, that will be a terrible experience! But when you walk along a clean and beautiful river, you can have a good mood. However,I prefer walking along a sea.

You are near the Abode of the Sacred Snake? Isn't that what the long name of your home means in English? I have never been there, but I have heard it is an exciting and beautiful place to live.

I prefer walking along the ocean with the waves rushing to shore. It is the most peaceful and relaxing scenery I know. Whenever I want to relieve my worries, I go to the beach. Unfortunately that is often as it means at least a 3 hour drive to get there.

That is quite a long drive! I hope that you are able at least occasionally to take an overnight trip to the ocean and enjoy the ocean walk that you love. It is good to have a nice vacation once in a while.

I do not have any "wild" water to walk along. We do have several parks with rivers through them or "lakes" in them. One has a goldfish pond. There are sidewalks and walking paths. On an average day, these are nice and convenient as well. Each one is only about a mile from my house. Further away we have real lakes and resevoirs. Usually about an hour from us. There is not really any city type set up at those. There are people riding pontoon boats, speed boats, ski boats, fishing boats, and jet skis. It can get very busy on the lakes around here. I do love it, though. Actually I enjoy after people have to go back to school, if I can get off in the middle of the week and my husband and I can go to the lake, and almost no people are there. That is what we did on our first date.

How romantic your first date must have been. There is very much to be said about a goldfish pond in the middle of a park, too, with nice benches to sit upon, and lovely walking paths.

I would just love to walk by the river side if I ever lived close to one. Unfortunately, I live by the sea. But, when I was living in Mysore, Karnataka state, India, I did visit the Cauvery river once in a while. And it was just beautiful to listen to the sound of the water gushing through the doors of the dam. And also, beautiful migratory birds flying around the place. I also had a wonderful experience on the Tungabhadra river near Hampi in Karnataka again. Had to cross it once then walk across the island and cross the other side of the river to a place called Nava Brindavan, where there is a Samadhi of nine yogis. But, there's hardly any civilisation around that place. It's just a small village there and the place is so calm and serene. Lots and lots of water, with rocks all around. It's just heaven over there. You can just go there all by yourself and cross the river by boat and take a walk along the river side with nobody to bother you.

Yes, that does sound heavenly. A sea or an ocean is a tranquil and lovely place to relax as well, however. Different, but still beautiful.

I love to walk along the river specialy in the town , where the river is in the middle of centrum or it just go through some bridge and behind that is built some castle or so.We have so many of them in the Europe and it is so nice to walk there. If is good exrcise?I am sure it is, it is walking, so you are movung and doing something for your body.If I should choose between walking on the beach or along the river I am not sure what I would choose while both of them has own charm and maybe each one of them is nice in different time of the year.I can imagine nice walking along the river in the autumn and sprig and walking on the beach in the morning in summer.

Yes, it is nice when the water is near art shows, restaurants, and other conveniences of town whether the water is fresh or salty. Thank you for your insight.

I like the feeling it will give me. very warm and peaceful. i need some walk along the river to unwind. To clear my minds of all the thought and worries. And to find my body some rest and relaxation. Doing a nature tripping is really good physically and mentally. It helps us unload our burden that is brought to us by our daily struggle in life.

I walk at least 4 miles a day. I usually walk through my cities parks from work to home. I also have a dog so we walk alot. I think walking is a bit of therapy for me too it lets me think and clear my thoughts before I go to work and after I come out. We do have a river and ocean walk here I don't do it that often because it will be a longer walk then I usually do but I enjoy being by the water alot. I think walking is great and it keeps you healthy.

THat looks like a lovely place to walk. Myself because I do prefer the ocean, I really enjoy walking in the sand with the waves crashing at my feet. But a river will do too I like to be close to the water. I also love to hike in trails along the lakes in here or take the canoe and go even when there are lots of portages to pass :) Walking is always healthy and a good exercise and when it's done in an clean fresh area, away from the pollution and with some water involved .. it's the best :)

I'm not so sure my soul needs shaking. But walking along a lake or ocean is very peaceful. My river is just below the dam, so there is a lovely lake very near, too, where I also love to go. However, there are no "facilities" there. It can seem quite desolate sometimes.

Oh, yes, I quite forgot to mention the lovely sound that the water makes, especially if there are some rocks which make the water clap and swirl. It seems as though the current is carrying all the word's troubles away.

i also love to walk along the river especially if it is shallow and its safe.i love the feeling of rushing water that meets your body sometimes it can even moves you to the forward direction. ilove that feeling. in our place there are no crocodile or alligator that can eat you up when you are not careful in the river at all so no problem. i love hicking too in forest, mountains with less civilization and i prefer doing it alone. i always do it every week especiall if i had a free time.good day.
