If This Describes You, You Don't Deserve to be Treated With Respect!

Is this you? Are you the miserable oaf who acts as if you are the only one in the restaurant? Demanding personal attention at the expense of everyone else at your servers' tables? Then considers that service unworthy of a decent (or any) tip? Is it you who has decided that the best place to address your greviances with oil companies is by harrassing and abusing the attendant at the gas station? Are you one of those flyers who think the NTSB workers know, and can personally vouch for your integrity, so you should be the only one exempt from the rules everyone else just puts up with? (yes, there is no reason YOU shouldn't have to take off your shoes and belt!). Is it you who makes the line move so much slower, while you whine and complain about how slow it moves? Are you the one who thinks it's somehow useful to go to Wal~Mart and fill a cart, then leave it? Making the very working person who you claim to care about return the items to the shelves? Did you listen to yourself when you went on and on about your rights, to some worker who has no authority or position to change anything? If that was you, guess what... You didn't deserve any hospitality, kindness, respect or service... but I bet you got it anyway! Why? Because the person forced to put up with your kind of stupidity is a far better person than you'll ever be!

It's a funny thing, though, that such an individual, even wants to be President of the United States of America. One of the candidates over the last few years has been in the news twice for behaving in a similar manner as examplefied in your post by leaving no tip! I'll let you guess who she is!

Oh I know, she is aweful to those unlucky enough to have to serve her. Talking to military vets who had to work in the Clinton White House, she made it a point to openly snub them as often as possible. When she did have to speak to them, it was always rudely and with as much contempt as possible. She is a hateful disgrace.

I am not that person, but I have been on the other side of it. I have been a waitress before and the way some people act is disgraceful. Some people act like you are their personal slave and then turn around and not even leave a tip. And the sad thing is some of them thinks its funny.

Oh I know! How rudeness and being a whining baby became "humorous" is beyond me. If one of my friends pulled crap like that, they would catch a lot more than laughter from me.

Hmmm...sounds like you've either worked in customer service and had to deal with a'holes like this before or you have a very kind understanding of the customer service industry. I have worked in various kinds of customer service since I was 16 so I am always patient with other customer service workers unless they are blatantly rude to me for no reason. I think everyone should have to work in customer service in some point in their lives just so they have to see what it's like to put up with impatient, rude people. Maybe then the world would be a nicer place.

The problem with that is there are two kinds of people, those who say, "I've been there, so I understand" and those who say, "I got crapped on, now it's my turn to do some crapping on others!"

Not me! I'm a true believe in "do unto others"....having waitressed for a lot of years I know the type of people you are talking about there and just as soon shoot them as wait on them..lol! I've never left a cart in a store with anything in it no matter how long the lines are! Nope...I'm none of those things and don't like to deal with people who are.

The people who fill a cart and leave it don't do it because they lines are long. It's a form of protest. People do it because they think it's costing the company money, because they have to pay one of their workers to put it all back. The fact is though, it isn't costing the company anything, since they are paying the employee for that hour anyway (its not like they call in someone not working at the time). All they are really doing is making more work for someone and reducing the floor help available to customers.

Not to mention raising the prices at these stores. I've seen people leave a whole cart of frozen or refrigerated food like this. The only way the store is hurting on this is loss of merchandise, which raises the prices for the other people. It doesn't cost anything in labor, though, like you said.

There are some people doing that thing and I know a few of them... Honestly, I only go to restaurant on special occasion and I make sure I treat people nicely and I don't want to be treated that way too...

It is never me.i dont think its quite advisable for anyone to be as mentioned above.the bearers are workers in the hotel and they are not our slaves for us to be so rude or to control them.everyone gets their turn and one has to wait for their turns.we are not kings to get the full personal attention where ever we go.even if one is ,you have not right to command someone to do so and so .but i see many people around me as arrogant as you have mentioned.

interesting discussion.there are people like that scattered around the world. i hope they don't make up most of the world's population.

Nope, it's not me that treats others with disrespect, especially people in the service industry. I have been with a couple of people in my life who do treat others as though they are second class citizens. As a result, I don't go anywhere with them any longer. I felt terribly embarrassed. We have a cleaning lady. I have never and would never treat her with disrespect. She is not beneath me. She may work for us but she's still a person that deserves the same treatment as anyone else. Actually, she is doing us a favor by cleaning our house. Nobody is beneath me. Respect and love was taught to me at a very early age. I follow it everyday and will until I am no longer here.

I'm glad to hear your parents taught you respect. I'm betting those who make it a point to treat service people like slaves teach their kids to do so also. My hope is that their kids grow up embarrassed by their parents' ignorance and grow beyond their upbringing.

Para, people who have to work with the public everywhere would cheer your discussion! I know I do! Just last night I answered a call for my work at home job and the person yelled obscenities and started hitting buttons on the phone. I'm sure this caller thought his actions were hilarious, but the jokes on him, his antics dropped my Average Length of Call so I hit bonus and made extra money for that shift! LOL I also dealt with several of the types of people you spoke of when I was waiting tables and also as a restaurant manager. You're right they don't deserve any respect. You give what you get, and if you run around treating people shabbily you have no one to blame but yourself when you get treated that way in return.

I've even started a new policy in my office with all the habitual offenders who let their insurance poicies cancel due to non pay and then blame me. I sent them all letters saying that if their policies cancel they will not be reinstated. A few have started paying on time and the rest have freed up my time to chase more lucrative prospects.

I had to laugh while reading this only because I've come across those people more than once. Just about every job I've had was customer service related, be it hospital work, food service or telecommunications. In each of those areas I have dealt with the people you speak of. A few of my friends still work in food service and I'm actually surprised they haven't been fired for punching the crap outta someone yet. I remember when I was working for a cell phone company I had a lady get all mad at me and start yelling because her phone wasn't getting service. Why you ask, because they just had an eletrical storm and the tower was struck by lighting. Oh but apperntly acts of nature are in my control and I should make her phone work again, because she's paying for service. I asked her if she called the eletric company and complained to them because the power was out in that town too. She said no cause the storm knocked the power out and it wasn't their fault. I hung up on her.

I have a different perspective on this. I think the person you describe is terrible. However, I think they do deserve to be treated with respect. I think every human deserves respect. The way I see it, the person you describe is a creep, and there is a reason he has decided to treat customer service personell the way he does. I have gotten really terrible service over the last several years. It is getting to the point where if someone does treat me nicely I am surprised. I will usually call the manager to compliment the person. I think by giving postive thoughts those thoughts will go forward. This is a matter of which came first- the chicken or the egg? I honestly believe that, especially with older people, the lack of good service now days leads to grumpy patrons.

There is something to that, and yes, I could (and have) do a whole article on lousy and lazy service. It is the job of the service person to provide an enjoyable experience for the patron. It's the ones who make it a point to be unbearable jerks that I'm talking about here. The ones who business would do well to chase off, since they drain the business more than they contribute.

I completely understand what you are saying. There are definately some people who it seems it is their mission in life to make others miserable. I just think that they still deserve to be treated with respect. Of course, you could respectfully say, "Sir (or Madam) you are not treating me respectfully, so I am going to refuse service to you until you can talk to me with the dignity that I deserve". I'm DEFINATEY not saying that anyone should have to put up with the harrassment that these people give. Trust me, I understand the harrassment. My husband and I own a landscape maintenance company, and there are a couple of customers who have made the mistake of treating one or both of us as if we were the dirt under their feet. They quickly found out that we will not continue to serve people who will not give respect to service personnell. We don't do it disrespectfully, but we send them a letter explaining that we are not the company that they need doing their lawn. I hope that makes sense and clears up what I was saying.

Yes, people should treat the oafs with respect, but they still don't deserve it. ;~D

Everybody should be treated with the same respect and we should treat others how we want to be treated but why is it that everytime I go out for a meal and I can't afford to tip my waiter/ess I am made to feel really small, they take it as a personal insult. Tipping should be banned if you ask me then we all know where we stand.

If you can't afford a respectable tip, you can't afford to eat at that place. A small tip IS a personal insult. I'm not talking about the servers who think they are owed at least 20% tip (to me, those are just as unreasonable as the pompous customer), but if you can't afford a 10-15% tip, you should be eating fast food. I do agree with you that servers shouldn't mistreat you after a small tip though.

No, you are the one living on a different planet. When a server accepts a job in a restaurant, tips are considered part of their income. They aren't paid much by the restaurant, they are paid by the customers. In other words, if you leave a low tip, or no tip at all, you are expecting your server to work for next to nothing. Yes, you do owe them a tip, how much is up to you... but you do owe them.
13 Nov 07
I spend about £30 ($60)a meal for me and my partner once or twice a week. If you think I should tip 15 % for service which you are getting paid for anyway you are on another planet. If you can't live off the wage without tips then you should get another job. If you are getting tipped 15% off every meal that you serve, why the hell should we feel sorry for you? Seems to me you are making quite a healthy wage but you have just made up my mind never to tip again.
