Have you switched over to the cfls yet? What are your opinions of them? do you like them just as well or better than incandescents? or - do you have problems with them? Do they last as long as they are touted to? Have you noticed an increase in headaches or irritability when in rooms with them? I wonder if they are safe for use with epileptics in the home?

We are now 100% Compact Fluorescent in our home we have been for over a year now, & I have found them better than expected. The light is good from them which was surprising as we tried them in the past and they were really dim but I thnk they have made them brighter over the years. They definatley last longer as well, we used to get through quite a few candelescent bulbs in a year but we haven't even replaced one of the CFL's in a year. No problems with headaches apart from when the kids have been squealing all day! There is a link with the lights & some epileptics.. apparently only 5% of all epileptics have a reaction to Fluorescent lights (photosensitive epileptic) I would not recommend the lights if you suffer from this & just stick to candelescent bulbs until they develop a epileptic-proof CFL. With the wonders of science these days I'm sure that's not too far off.

We've slowly been switching over to them. The only problem we had was we had to find the special smaller ones because of having ceiling fan lights and other globes where the normal sized (equal to 60 watts) CFL's didn't want to fit in. We have the ones that equal 40 watts and they are smaller in length which helps. I prefer them anyways since they are less energy use then the bigger ones. They give off a lot of light too. I'm hoping they really help with the electric bill too. Ours gets very high in the summer and anything to keep it low is for me.

For some reason I hit respond to this discussion but it posted it here as if it was a comment to this response. Don't know why. Just strange.

I am using them now, when they first came out i think they had a different sort of glow about them that I couldn't get used to but I think they may have improved slightly.

We switched all our bulbs over to cfls. They're more efficient and definitely last longer. It was a bit of an adjustment at first but now I like them better than the incandescents. They don't "flicker" like the old fluorescents used to when turning on. They've definitely improved the look (less harsh) and have lots more sizes and options.

We use CFLs in our house. Our electric company recommends the use of CFLs because they save as much as 80% of light consumption, and they have a longer lifespan equivalent to 6-8 incandescent bulbs.

Yes, we have switched over. Anything to keep our rates here in Maryland lower. Considering we got hit with a 70% increase this past year and they are talking about another increase in June. We have had a couple that didn't last too long I don't know if it was because they were defective or not. I need to read the package to see what the warranty is and I might start saving the package and the receipt to see if I can send them back. Now I did drop one about two weeks ago and it broke. Our big concern was did the mercury leak out. We didn't see any so I guess I broke it in a good spot. Dumb me. My only concern is that people are throwing them away like other lightbulbs. There needs to be places to drop them off at. I know Ikea is one place, but not everyone is fortunate to be near one. I have noticed an increase in headaches. I actually think the lighting is softer versus regular lightbulbs.

Do you think that the headache are in relation to the lights? I have had a few more headaches this year but mine seem to start at my work place rather than at home. The lught there is super harsh plus we get glare from outside.

I have a problem with zombiesqueness (for lack of knowing what to call it) when I am in malls or some grocery stores - I often wondered if it was not from the fluorescents. I get fuzzy headed, unable to concentrate and easily distracted.

I don't know if the headaches are from the lights on my girls fighting! LOL Or I have noticed a change in my eyesight, I think this is the year that I have to switch to bifocals, so I don't know if that is it or not.

We have thw natural light cfl and I can tell you that they dropped our electric bill roughly $20/month! We have had them about a year with no problems. I believe they are suppose to last 3-5 years, so only time will tell. They do run a lot cooler and you can tell the difference as soon as you switch the bulbs out.

that is a significant savings - probably saving some in cooling costs in the summer too then.

We got some and put them out in the garage and it was a mistake. The cant be where it gets cold. They flash and flicker until they warm up. In the home they are good. Not as light but they work just fine. I wouldnt put them in a bathroom but anywhere else is great. They last a long long time but I never really had a problem with my normal lights going bad that fast. Money wise Im not sure I am saving that much. The compact flourecents are $2.50 each and a normal bulb is $.99 a 4 pack so I can buy 10 light bulbs for the same price as one. There is the energy savings but we keep our lights out a lot so I dont really know. I would love to have the time to do a reall study on out use and the savings.

We just recently switced over to some in a couple of rooms in the house, so I can't really say if they last longer then regular light bulbs. I haven't experienced any headaches or other 'side effects' from them and have never heard of any. I would think they would be safe to use, since I have never heard of any side effects you might try them out in just one room, they are supposed to be more economical.

I have not switched over but plan to in the future....I really don't know much about them except the impact they have on your utility bill and helping save resources.

I am very sensitive to the old kind of flourescent lights but have had no problems with these except that I don't like them crammed down our throats. I think it really needs to be a choice, not a mandate. I have no idea of the effect on epileptics. I am concerned about the materials they are made from and if they are not more harmful to the environment in the long run than those we are being forced to replace. I like the warmer light of the old kind and the fact that they help heat the room in the cooler months, but some of the new kind are full-spectrum and that is good. Verilux Happy Lights are my personal favorites.

I agree with you about them being crammed down our throats - in a democratic and free society?? our choices are being whittled away in so many arenas.

we have one in our lamp in theliving room and it has burned night and day for three years now and have not noticed any increase in headaches or irritability when in the living room with it but it saves on our electic bill.

I'm not using them now, but if I ever get my own home again, I plan on switching, at least one at a time to see if I like them. I wonder why some are getting headaches?

I am thinking it has to do with teh constant humming they make as well as the movement. while it may not be conceivable to our eyesight it does still occur and perhaps that quick strobbing has an effect.... those who suffer migraines have a more heightened awareness, it is a throwback from survival of the fittest days. (apparently)

Interesting. I remember the long tubular one's humming some, but I guess I never really thought about all of them doing that. I could probably handle them in an area where there are other things going on, like the kitchen, but I probably would have a problem with one while just sitting quietly and reading or something. I'm glad you brought this up!
