Is selling in yard/garage sales really worth the hassle?

I have never had a yard sale or put my stuff in someone else's yard sale. I think that if you have some higher prices stuff to sell along with the clothes and things it could be worth it.

It is alot of work, and unless you have alot of things to sell and some higher priced items, I don't think it is worth it. I set the clothes out on tables and make them .25 a piece unless they are marked differently, which very few are marked. We live on a main street with lots of traffic, so we have good luck.

...did you recently sell a dvd on ebay? If not, their user name was a lot like your mylot user name! It was a dvd about Jesus.. and the debate concerning him.. It's likely not? And that's ok! But if so, I guess it is still rather a small world at times..

I had one yard sale before and it was pretty cool. I like getting rid of old stuff so if there is a chance people will buy it then I think the work is worth it. Even if I don't make that much. I will always try to sell something on ebay before I take it to the Goodwill.

I guess it is like working on line and thinking a person is going to get filthy rich doing it. It probably won't happen. If you have items for sale that people want then you will make some money. If you have worn out clothes, broken or dirty toys, and such as that you won't make any money.

Putting it all out and taking it back in is such a hassle. People are always asking to pay less than what you're asking even if you are giving a ridiculous deal. Try a consignment shop if you have nice things. At least it is out of your house and you may make something back without having to do the work.

I've never had a yard sale of my own, but my husband says I have to before we move again. He says we have way too much stuff, and he's probably right. I know when we moved last summer, it was a mandatory local move (They were rebuilding the houses in the area on base that we lived in), so the Air Force paid for us to move our stuff, no matter how much it weighed. It weighed approximately twice what they would have paid for if we were moving across country. I guess that means that I have to get rid of half of my stuff before we get stationed somewhere else! Anyway, when I was younger, I helped my best friend with her family's yard sale every year. We usually did pretty good. We had it open for about 5-6 hours a day, two days, and probably averaged around $500 or so each year. It really varied, though, depending on what all we had for sale. The setting up wasn't too bad. We usually put stuff together in areas, and just labeled that everything on this table was $5 each, everything in this box is $1, etc.

I remember having a couple of sales years ago and I never made much at all. My sister has had them and made hundreds of dollars. I can remember going to one last year and I spent about $50 as did my daughter and mostly all on baby clothes and we barely made a dent in what the woman had. She had other things for sale as well but she had wonderful prices and the things were like new. She had a huge yard full of things and she had to have made a lot of money in the days that she was selling. I was wondering where all the things came from. I have also seen those houses where the women drag the same things out week after week. I can't imagine that they have nothing better to do and it seems that people have caught on the fact that they have been there week after week. Some of the things that they have out are old, too. I have found many different things at the sales that I have gone to and have been lucky already this year and the summer has bearly begun. My sister and I like to go and shop for our grandchildren. My daughter was just telling me that she is having one in a few weeks and I just took some things to a thrift shop a couple weeks ago that I have had at my apartment for a year since I was tired of looking at them in the laundry room!!

I had a yard sale at my friend's house this morning. I packed up myself, all of my stuff and my daughter. It was definitly worth it. I made $85 and handed out a ton of business cards for my business. I was really excited and feel like that was a lot of money for a little bit of my time. Plus, my friend and I got in some quality chatting time. All in all, a good day for me and a yard sale worth having.

Having a yard sale is just not worth it to me as you make very little and spend a lotof time doing that too. I would much rather spend that time going to a yard sale and picking something I wanted for little or nothing. lol

I think we all feel that way after having a garage sale. LOL! We give really good deals real cheap just because we don't want to deal with the leftovers later. Online is a good thing. I live in Denver. We have one of the largest flea markets here. I used to go everyweekend. Sometimes you make money, sometimes you don't. I no longer have a car. So i have done a little online. I have a room full of stuff to get rid of.

The only time a garage sale is worth having (I've had three myself) is if you have a TON of stuff! The best way to draw a large crowd is with lots and lots of tables full of things other than clothing. Otherwise, it seems like a lot of work for very little money. Our first sale was fantastic and we made just under $300. That one was well worth the time spent to put it together! The others only netted about $50, which wasn't enough for me to have spent the time we did on it.
