I thought it was a boy, I was corrected.

Today at the pool my son was playing with a long haired kid. This kid was throwing a squishy ball and throwing pretty good I might add. The kid also had on a shirt like a surfer wears. The kids mother asked me how old my son was, "8" came the reply. Then I asked how old her son was, she said, "She's a girl, her name is Anna." Whoops! I tried to cover up and say that boys sometimes have long hair, that flew like a one winged duck. The mom had short hair and it threw me off. I've seen boys with long hair and girls with short hair. Ever had that happen to you? Somebody throw me a buoy!

Hahahaha ... throw you a buoy - or throw you a girl! I purposely never try to guess a baby's age these days - it's no longer a matter of a blue or pink bundle in the pram! I've made the mistake of thinking an acquaintance's teenaged daughter was a boy, and when the parent pointed out her name, I was really shocked. She was a very stocky girl with big shoulders, no chest and boy's clothing. She had very short hair in a baseball cap, and I actually thought the mother was having me on. It's a dangerous world we live in - full of hidden perils!

There seem to be an interchange. The boy has the long hair and the mother has the short hair.(Funny!) Well that is their choice! To each his own so they say! But to me I would prefer my son to look as a boy should and never would want him be mistaken for a girl so I never would allow her to sport a long hair. And the greater reason for this stand of mine is because of the following: 1Corinthians 11:3-15 tells us that since the man is the head of the woman, and there is a basic difference between men and women, that difference is in the ways men and women wear their hair. Please read: "But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head ... "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. ... For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. ... "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering." Therefore: As the Bible says, so do I follow!

And to answer your question: Yes, dear, a number of times were I've confused with so many man sporting long hair. Just to think that men and women now dress alike, if their hair are the same how then could I differentiate?

Well Mom is probably used to it. ANd if she was dressed in surfer clothing it is an honest mistake. I would not lose any sleep over it. You will probably never see then again and if you do, you will know she is a girl.

Yes it has happened to me. When I was 8 or 9 my mom made cut our hair in a pixie cut. Well that is what she called it. I will tell you she cut our hair really really short. My sisters and I went to Vacation Bible school. I was put in the group with the boys. I had to saw stars out for the girls to glue pictures onto. I hated it. Mom had made us wear shorts and would not let us wear dresses. I was so upset, I kept telling the paster I was a girl and I could not cut the star and he would not let me go with my sisters. The next day I went back to vacation bible school in a dress. when it came time to split up in groups he asked "Where is my other little boy" I hid behind my sister so he asked again. I finally spoke up and said it was me but I told you I was a girl and could not cut the stars. I was so embarrassed.

No, but when I was 20-something and hand hair below my fanny, I frightened an old lady in a public washroom because she saw my workboots under the stall and thought I was a guy. She was standing the the washroom going on and on about "This is a women's washroom, guys are not supposed to be in here" when I came out and asked her what all the yammering was about. She told me to get out, that men were not allowed. Aside from the boots, I am and always was a very female looking sort of woman, and had never been mistaken for a guy before and only once since. That was from behind when I had a very short haircut and as soon as I turned around the guy who called me a "dude" got all red in the face and apologized. There have been some people I've met where I wasn't quite sure which way they swung, but in those cases, I tried to use gender neutral terms. I did get into trouble with someone on the phone once when a customer called in with an gender ambiguous name, such as Chris, and when I asked, "Can you hold, sir?" it turned out she was a ma'am.

It really is getting hard to tell anymore. I would not beat myself up to bad. I would guess the lady did not think alot about it.

Sometimes it is hard to tell unless the girls go past puberty and things start sticking out. I have had made mistakes thinking a girl was a boy or visa versa. I even had a woman think my brother was a girl because he had these lovely curls while I had dark hair that just waved. I felt very hurt, so after that I was careful of keeping my mouth shut until I had a close look. I was mistaken lots of times but no one knew about it.

My mum was on a bus and she overheard people talking. A baby was in a pushchair and an old lady said he was a sweet looking boy. The mother replied that she was wearing pink she she must be a girl. The old lady was told she was stupid so I think that was quite sad. People can be rude and hurtful sometimes. My thirteen year old son has shoulder length hair and he likes it that way. He wears the sort of clothes that a business man likes to have on. These are a smart shirt and trousers. So I know exactly what you mean about hair. I taught a class with non identical twin girls in it and a boy and a girl that were not related. The boy and the girl both had blond curly short hair and blue eyes. The children didn't have to wear school uniform. It was awful to mix them up as one was a boy and the other was a girl.

I was totally embarrassed then I flipped out and said, young man I stand corrected, but I suggest you visit a barber shopif you dont want to be called a girl. then I walked off, still embarassed but also satisfied with myself. lol.

Mistakes like that happen. The best way to avoid that is to use generic terms until you've established the correct gender. Even some names wouldn't necessarily seal it.

I have not done that to another parent but other people have assumed my older daughter was a boy (she has short hair and has always preferred 'boy' clothes) and one time some old guy even mentioned my 'son' when my daughter was an infant - but she was wearing PINK ruffles, I'm not sure where that signifies BOY but oh well. She also wasn't bald, you think lots of hair plus pink plus ruffles - GIRL, right? LOL!

actually it has happened to before. where i live for some reason a lot of little boys have long braided hair. there was this kid outside playing with my nieces one day when i got home from work. they were playing doll house. the kid was wearing a red pants and a white t-shirt. so as i walked down the steps, "i said Jada i see that you have a new girlfriend to play dolls with". boy do i wish i hadn't said that! the little girl turned out to be a boy. he just smiled and said good afternoon, i smiled back, apologized and walked inside the house talk about embarrassing situations.

Yes, it happended to me sometimes. It is hard to tell it is a male or female from back. Women like cool short hair and men like curly long hair. When i was in high school one of my classmates had the long hair. His hair was so soft. A lot of girls were jealous him.
