What would you have done?

Today at work, my friend came back from getting gas on her break in tears. She is a young black girl. She said that she and another car were waiting for two different cars to finish and leave. Her person finished first. The other car cut in front of her and took her pump. She got out and told the girl, a young white girl, that it wasn't nice to cut her off and take her pump. The other girl started pushing her and calling her a racial slur starting with N. None of the other patrons did a thing! The owners of the station didn't do anything either. When she got back, we asked her if she got the other person's plate number and then we had her call the police. My husband says the police won't do anything about it. That they just let her fill out a report to make her feel better. What do you think? What would you have done if you saw that happening? I like to think I would call the police on my cell and try to stop the girl from pushing her.

Yes, the police will take a statement and if the young black girl wishes to pursue it she wants to. That aside, political correctness is not a law but the pushing could be considered assault.

Couldn't the racial slur in addition to the push turn it into a hate crime?

You would have to prove it was a hate crime.

Unfortunately I don't think a hate crime carries nearly as severe a penalty as assault, so it might be best to leave that one alone.

People are so rude. I kind of know how this young lady feels because I am native american and have had things said to me. I think that the police would take a statement from her and allow her to persue it further if she wanted to. If I saw something like that happen I would have tried to step in and say something. But the bad thing is that people in this society now n days really dont care about anything except for themselfs.

I hate that people feel the need to pick on others because they are different just to make themselves feel superior. I don't see my friends as different. Their skin is black like my hair is blond.

I'm with you on that, I sure would have called the police. She probably would have gotten harrassment charges at the very least. And with the pushing, she should get inciting a fight with intent of physical harm. She definitely should NOT be allowed to get away with this stuff. You know, if the police do not do anything, there's always the NAACP; or the local news crew who very well might be interested in doing a piece about it, they could even go to that girls house for her comment. (She'd probably slam the door on the news crew and show herself to be the real jerk that she is lol) Racial slurs! How horrible for your friend. That line-jumping gal might just be ignorant, or who knows, she might be a member of a white supremacy group or something. Whatever her reasoning, she should not be allowed to get away with such deporable acts against someone of a different color. Stuff like that really ticks me off but royal! In a way I can see where the other patrons might be afraid to get involved, but still, they could have made a complaint to the management or called the police at the very least...not ignore it!

Well, that's good that her mother realized it was wrong, at least she was trying to get the girl under control. I still think that would be considered assault and should have been followed up by the police. I'm glad that the guy at the station inquired if she was OK, and also it's good that she has a credible witness if needed.

I forgot to mention, the white girl's mother was in the car and yelling at her to "quit pushing that girl" according to my friend.

I would have intervened and at least had words with the brat. I can't believe no one else did anything. That girl was assaulted and the other got away with it. NOT acceptable. "All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing."

Hopefully the police will investigate the episode and at least go scare some sense into that child.

If the girl that was getting pushed wants to pursue it then she can. But most times it won't even going past filling out a statement. The pushing however can be considered assault. But depending on the state/country/province you are in they might even just turn their cheek the other way. Honestly in this case I would just call the cops and wait for them to deal with it. You don't know what this other girl is capable of or if she has a weapon that she can use. It is not worth being a hero to save someone in this day and age anymore. You might both end up hurt or even worse if you interject.

This world is full of rude people who just are cruel to the bone . what was the need to call your friend a name like that . she had no right to cut and no right to push at her . that girl sounds like she may have issues and I wish the owner would of done something . Too many people now a days just look away and that is not right . Your friend would be able to make a statement if she knows the number or anything like that . a witness is always good too . maybe it will teach the other girl that you cant get away with things like that . i hope it all works out in the end.

She wrote down the plate number and also the guy inside saw the episode. He asked her if she was ok when she went to pay for her gas.

I am surprised to hear this. I thought US is free from racism. Racism is a very very uncivilized attitude.

I would have called the police, but I definitely would have gotten between them and stopped the assault. I just cannot stand by and watch something like that. I know that people are afraid, heck, I've been afraid myself. But I'm only afraid after the fact. While something is going on, I don't even think about it. I'd much rather be hurt than be guilty for the rest of my life for watching and doing nothing to help.

Unfortunately, since the other people just stood and watched and did nothing, if she did press charges she probably would not have anyone on her side as a witness. It is so terrible how some people think that they can just push other people around. The name calling was not neccessary. Sorry to say, I think your husband is correct, it is a my word against your word, and guess whose word would be believed?

I'm not sure how I would have reacted to seeing two girls pushing and shoving each other. My first thought would probably have been that they probably knew each other and were fighting over a boyfriend or something. Of course had I seen the one gal cut in front of the other I think I probably would have gone over and said my piece as well. Just because the gal that cut in front was white does not make her superior to the black girl. The black girl was there first. I would probably also have gone in to the station and reported it and asked them to call the police.

Well, that wasn't very nice! If I saw that happening, I would've got along side her, and told that other girl, my friend got to the pump first. I hate rude people. Jeez. At least Karma will come back and nip her in the bud!

I was proud of my friend for not pounding the other girl. She said, if she hadn't been wearing her uniform, she might have!

Wow, first of all that is a shock, that nobody even jumped in to stop the argument. I know were I live at someone would have came in between them. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt anything would happen just the police writing a report. Wow, though, I am just in complete shock of all that has happened to her.

I would definitely call the police, if I was there. I cannot believe that no one helped her. They probably won't do anything, but maybe they will watch the station for the other girl to act out again.

That type of behaviour is FAR from appropriate. To not only be rude and cut in like that and then use racial slurs in parallel is unacceptable. Regardless of what the outcome is I would report the license plate number and incident to the police and argue that it was assault and threatening behaviour. The whole incident should have been caught on tape too so she would be able to back up her claims. I would like to think that if I had been present then I would have said something to the girl pushing her and being abusive but to be honest I am not sure if I would have or not. If it was just pushing and name calling I would be inclined to stay out of it and it is only if it got more out of hand that I would probably step in to break things up. What I would do though is pay extra attention to every detail of what was happening in case it did end up worse or in court or something.

i would have contacted the police. that is a hate crime and it also was a physical assault. whether or not the police did anything or not would depend on the area and possibly the cop on duty. If they did nothing, she should go public with it or sue the city. I hate it so much when people stand around and turn their heads when they see something like this going on. If a cop had showed up on the scene, I am sure something would have been done. what a horrible story.

Well, I know what I would do if I witnessed something like that....get on my moral high horse and tell that little white trash queen where to go and just exactly why people are still having racial problems. First of all she was ignorant to cut in front of anyone waiting for a pump, second of all was it really worth her making comments like that, and shoving? No, it's not like we are having a gas shortage or living in Mad Max territory. And you husband is right. If all she did was say something and no one stepped forward to witness the actual pushing then it's her word against hers. But anyone who was standing there and watched such a thing should be ashamed of themselves for not speaking up. That is what is wrong with society. Everyone thinks for themselves and only looks out for NUMBER 1. I get so sick of hearing this and it makes me angry.

If I saw that, I would definitely take down the plate number and call the police. That is complete BS and she did not deserve to be treated that way. I would probably have also stepped in myself and tried to help. I think sometimes the police don't do anything and that is a true shame. I think that if taxpayers are going to pay for them to protect us, then they need to protect us.
