If you had to evacuate your house in 15 minutes, what would you take with you?

Besides the obvious things like your kids and animals, what would you grab to evacuate? I was thinking about this since Fay has been hanging around. I decided the most important thing would be to get out as fast as I can and try to beat as many people on the road. I think I would be able to get the following items in about 15 - 20 minutes: I would grab a cooler and throw some water and food in it, grab some blankets and pillows, dog food, my purse, the spare gas can, and whatever clothes I could grab for the family and have the kids grab a few toys and books.

I would get irreplaceable family photos and things like my grandmother's handmade rug. I would get my other grandmother's wedding ring. I would get my paintings which are valuable, and for sure my lap top and a small TV, my radio that runs on battery power. Cellphones and medications. Maybe anything else I could carry.

I hate that I would have to say sentimental things would only get to come if I had time. Pictures are many times irreplaceable if lost or damaged so that would be something I would bring if I could.

My husband and I have jokingly talked about this, I know you said besides the obvious kids and animals, but we would have to run up to the attic and get the cat cages, because without them the cats would be kicking and screaming every inch of the way. I would grab the cat food, water, any money we may have, grab whatever snacks that are available, my husband's laptop, cell phones, blankets, some clothes, toothbrush and paste, and maybe my fifteen minutes are over, out the door we go.

Hopefully I'll never experience such an emergency but if I do I'll try to grab my 72 hour kit and my important papers. If there is any time left I would like to take my pictures and collectibles. Everything else I believe I can replace or do without. I think I could save a lot it 15 to 20 minutes but I shutter at the thought.

My purse, passports, insurance documents, and jewelry (those are just a few easy to grab pieces anyway, lol, but they have sentimental value). The first aid box and medicines we need/may need. Water and some food. The kids favorite toy, bed stuff, couple of clothes for all of us. The portraits of my daughters we had painted and the discs with homemovies and pictures. Everything else is replaceable or not immediately needed. The spare gas can is probably a good idea, too. Never know when you are stuck on the road with all the other evacuees. You definitely want to have some extra gas on hand.

I didn't think about passwords, that would be hard to get back if lost! I would have to add that to my important papers to grab - thanks.

That would be a very scary situation, I would also get what you said, though I would bring the cat food instead, we have seven cats, so it would probably take about five minutes in a mad dash to get that stuff, my family would probably have certain duties, such as I get the cats, and my brother gets the gas can and food packed, and my mother would perhaps get the food prepared. After I would get the cats I would grab a box of pictures and my camera because I have had so many precious moments captured that I do not want to lose. I would also grab my stash of money because that could eventually come in handy (throw it in my purse along with my ID's) and then I doubt I would take anything else because I would be out of time, but that is all that really matters to me, the house insurance can cover the rest if things are destroyed. Interesting hypothetical question you brought up, I am sure some people on mylot has actually had firsthand experience in this kind of evacuation because we come from so many places on earth that has different harmful environmental situations. Happy mylotting, and lets just hope we won't have to do that anytime soon!

I agree that most items are just stuff and can be replaced. I have an emergency kit I put together that has a lot of basics but it is interesting to see what things other people say that they would take so I can make sure I am ready to go if need be.

Our Dogs, Cats and Tortoise. The the fireproof boxes that have my old comics and cards. And the fireproof box that has all the personal documents and the manuals for all the equipment we own. And clean socks and undies too !

fireproof boxes are great, easy to grab and go (but heavy). Mom always said to have clean socks and undies! Nice of you to not leave the tortoise behind too I might add.

i already have a few things packed and put aside in case of such an emergency. in it are a variety of things like a flashlight, batteries, candles, manual can opener, matches, some first aid supplies, non perishable edibles like protein bars and such. i would grab those two prepacked boxes first, some water in a cooler, some canned food, blanket or two and some towels and have my son be getting his favorite stuffed animal and a book or two to keep his mind occupied, my purse and whatever is already in that and of course my cell phone. i have some stuff i keep in my car like a first aid kit, jumper cables, air compressor for tires, a small blanket and some plastic bags. i hope nothing like this ever happens but i feel it is always best to be prepared.

I think you are more prepared than most. I always remember to update my emergency box too as things change. The only thing I can't have is extra medicine because insurance only allows me enough for one month at a time when I would like to have an extra set in there. I guess i could have all the prescriptions written down and pharmacy info - I think I will do that right now! Lets hope we never need ours.

I would grab two kittens, important documents (legal stuff), some clothes, personal things, purse, laptop, foods, college books, toys for kittens, and kittens foods. The lesson that we have right now, we should have prepare everything before the storm come by. We should have three worth of foods, water, animal foods, and snacks. We should prepare legal stuff, clothes, books, etc for evacuate. So we can be ready when time come by.

That is great advice and maybe some people reading this will do so. I probably need to update some of my info.

I think (besides kids and animals) I would grab food (for everyone), camera and my computer (thats where all the pictures are stored) I always have my phone on me so that would automatically be with me. and then the diaper bag, diapers, wipes, and clothes. in the diaper bag I would go to the bathroom and grab our necessities and then make sure I have my CC's so we can get other things when needed. It takes me about 5 minutes to grab all that stuff in the morning when I am leaving so it wouldnt be as long if I was just grabbing and throwing so I could grab quite a bit of stuff. I just dont know what else I would grab that I think I would need

hmmm... What kind of situation is it?? Are we evacuating from a threat or an upcoming natural disaster?? I'd take my husband, my dog, purse, my journals, some clothes, maybe candles, lighters--it's here on my living room table--blankets are a good idea. I actually am unsure. It really makes me think of how unprepared for any type of a situation like that.

Candles are good to bring as there may be no electricity and batteries run out so easily. At least I got your brain thinking, could be any sort of disaster - wildfire, hurricane, depends on where you live.

I'll bring my wallet which contains my ATM and credit cards then my laptop. I'll just buy food to eat for my family. Oh, Maybe I'll bring a set of uniform and a pair of shoes so I can still work with official uniform.
• United States

I could see where you would need a uniform, if you lost it would be hard and maybe expensive to get another replacement.

I think a computer would have to be at the end of my list but I am sure it is at the top for others. Maybe if I had a laptop it woudl be easier to grab. Having email would be nice.

In 15 - 20 minutes I could probably get most of what I would want and need. Of course dog food, food, water. I would grab my camera bag, laptop, and scrapbooks, my teddybear I got in Tennessee, and a few other collectibles that couldn't be replaced. Clothes would be easy to throw in a bag and go. and if time, a few extras, my printer, pillows and blankets, etc. Of course my purse and file folder with important papers would go.
