How are you going to improve your writing skills in 2009? Are you going to hone you skill in a particular area? If so what area and how are you going to do it? Are you going to take in classes? Are you going to attend any conferences? Are you going to join a local writing group or an online group? I plan to finish a correspondence course I started last year, plus join in another online writing group. What are you going to do?

Thank you for starting a great topic of discussion. I intend to hone my skills in writing keyword or SEO articles. I have read about many of them, but have not gotten down to writing any. I think this would be the best way to increase my earning in 2009. I also hope to get a book published in 2009. I hope it would come true. Well, it's not really related to the topic, but it is going to be an achievement for me, since I have never published a book before. I have another idea for a recipe book, but I have not thought about that either. I'm not so much of a cook, you see. But anyway, it will be in my next project. The skill to writing recipes would be something totally new to me. I would like to learn how to do that too.

You are right, that is what professional writers do. I am a professional writer as well. The questions was what are you going to do to improve and hone your craft?

I thought it was sufficient to say that is how I am honing my craft, that is what I am doing continually improving, now if you wanted specific examples, write, write, write, I write constantly every day in some fashion or other, write in new styles, I don't do the same writing all the time, I write personal stories, research, articles for company and write them up, write editorials for other companies, write educational pieces, funny pieces, poems etc. I have taken several courses online when I felt I needed to become up to speed in a certain way of writing, such as stream of conciousness writing, I have written two books and published them, I constantly take on new challenges that come my way for freelance writing in new styles as well as familiar ones, I have been writing professionally for 5 years now, and about 10 years before without pay.

I am just starting to write so I have a very long way to go. In fact I don't have a lot of confidence at all. But I'm stubborn and I'll just keep trying. Any suggestions are always welcome.

I'd be happy to help you Pat. The main thing is to keep practicing. Write, write, write. Write anything. Have you signed up for Associated Content yet? They are great at helping you write better. The more you write, the better you will get and the more your confidence will grow. Let me know what I can do to help you. Merry Christmas. Hugs.

This is an absolutely great question. Too many people think all that being a writer takes is just to sit down and start writing. That is the first step and the biggest part of the whole process. However, not trying to improve, not attempting to discover how to write well through various avenues, can be a huge mistake. "Just sit down and start writing" is the best and worst advice ever given in my opinion. To be a writer you do have to "just sit down and start writing." But continuing to do that without ever trying to improve your skills is like building a house without blueprints. You may eventually get the job done, but there will be probably be a lot of mistakes along the way not to mention a shaky foundation. Great question. I've been a freelance writer for many years and I continue to read articles and books on how to write well. I especially like reading all types of authors online, whether they are novice or experienced writers. You can always learn something everyday that can add to this skill. Thanks for the question.

Great answer. I too think that is the best and worst advice; to just sit down and write. You have to fine tune your writing and the only way to do that is by reading, taking classes, and learning from other authors. I too have several authors websites that I go to. Thanks for your response.

I always start the New Year's off with plenty of resolutions, and besides trying to exercise more (a perennial resolution), the other thing I really want to do is to increase the amount of writing I do. I have started to pick up on my writing this past couple of months, but I know I could be doing a lot more. I try and write every day for Helium, I write on occasion for Associated Content, and I go through spurts where I write a lot for Gather. I write book reviews, too, and right now my pile of books to be read and reviewed is way too high. I think what I truly need is a schedule to keep me on track and producing. I tend to go hot and cold. I would love to attend a book conference this coming year. I went to one a few years back (AWP) and really enjoyed it so much. Another thing I would like to try again is to follow along with "The Artist's Way" and do morning pages every day. So, you can see I have a lot of plans...how about you? I'd love to hear what your plans include.

I too write for Associated Conent and have written an article for Helium. Who do you do book reviews for? I'd love to get into that. I'd love to attend a conference, but can't afford it this year. I'll be finishing a correspondence course I started though. As well as working on and finishing two novels. I also am going to join a new writer's group online. Sounds like you will be busy with your resolutions. Stick to them. Thanks for the response.

I'm going to try to improve my skills on putting together novels. That is, how they flow...since that is pretty important. I'm also going to continue to try to branch out from my original genre. I can't afford classes, or conferances, dunno if there's any local writing groups out here in the sticks, and online groups usually aren't to my liking. So...I'll just try to examine my style and try to improve, as usual...just in these areas now.

It sounds like you have a good plan in place. Good for you. I can't affort conferences or classes (other than the one I already have paid for and need to finish) either. They are very expensive. Thanks for your reply.

I am reading the book Bird by Bird now which is a treatise on writing and improving your writing. I wish I had more time to work on honing my writing skills. I loved "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott. It was fantastic. I am a huge believer in reading books regarding the craft of writing. I know what you mean about trying to always earn extra money to help support my writing. You can find time, it is a matter of prioritizing. Thanks for the response.

I just love to write and I have a few ideas that I would like to try in 2009! I guess the more that you write the better you become. I think that writing regularly on My Lot helps a lot. I have written a piece of fiction and it has been published on Associated Content and I have also written several articles for Helium and I also have some articles on Triond. I do like creative writing and would like to write some more short stories. I'm not too keen on the research aspect of writing so I guess I will focus more on writing fiction; I can then just empty my mind of all those wacky creations! I'm not sure that I would be interesting in taking part in a writing group though. I guess there's a lot of research that can be done online. Well, good luck with your own writings. Andrew

I'm going to join a writing group in January. I usually take some kind of a writing class and I like to read at least two books on writing thoughout the year. Reading authors whose works I admire always helps me but for the most part the way that I improve my writing skills is by writing, writing, writing. Best of luck to everyone.

I agree with you; writing and more writing tends to lead to better writing, lol. I read other authors and also books on the craft of writing as well throughout the year. My favorite is Stephen King's "On Writing".

Well, I'm pretty much working on that now. I have one last semester before I graduate, so there will be plenty of writing to do. I will be interning to learn how to write grant proposals. I've also got a screenplay class and a creative nonfiction class coming up. In the meantime, during the holiday break, I plant to post in forums, learn how to do a bit of copywriting, work on article marketing for affiliate programs, post to my blog, and reading. As long, as I keep practicing writing skills in some for or another, I know' ll get better at it. Words will come to me more smoothly, an make more sense. My key goal in all of my writing is to aim for clarity first so that my audience doesn't get confused about my intended message. Second, I will work on conciseness which seems to be my forte. Third, I will work on eloquence. That's my weakest area.

I hope to go on improving my writing skills, and continue to learn, as I have done this year. I have found Helium to be a great place to do this. I have gained three writing stars there, and I now know more about SEO and use of keywords from visiting the community forum. I have discovered a great deal this year, about writing for the internet. I have started blogging, and I have enjoyed responding to nearly 4000 discussions at myLot. Practice is the best way to improve, and reading is the best way to learn. I have read some useful articles, and I have also seen some very poor quality writing on the net, but that has helped me to know what not to do myself, and has encouraged me to try and do better. What I need to improve most is my speed as it still takes me a long time to perfect an article after writing the first draft.

I am always looking for ways to improve my writing but I always assumed that I would try reading more opinionated articles from a variety of sources .I hadn’t planned on any particular area but I would like to be more persuasive in my writing so I am thinking of speech writing and opinionated pieces .You have given me a great idea to contemplate on and that is to attend classes whether online or traditional classroom setting. Than you for you suggestion.

Well, I am 36 year old, I started collage last janaury. My magor is business, but I have decided to change my major to some type of writing. After, I had gotting two of my peoms published. My advisor seems to think that I need to change my major. After thinking about, I feel she right. I enjoy my writing classes that I had already, yet those are the classes that I made my best grades in. I found myself writing all the time. Either on my blogs or on paper. I have already started a folder of stuff that i wrote up. One of my collage teacher told me, that when you feel like writing jsut write. No matter where you are. So now I found myself write on anything i can get my hands on. I careing around a pad of paper with me at all the time. She also told me if you ever want to improve your writing skills, never stop writing even if you think it is stupid.
