The Dog Named Carl

Sitting in my car, was my mom who came with me to deliver a Christmas gift I had purchased for an elderly man in my church. As I got into the car, I asked the man the name of his dog (whom I also got a present, but didn't know the name). He replied, and my mom with amazement in her voice said, "Your dog's name is Carl?" Neither me nor the man could get any words out because we began laughing so hard. It was a rather large dog, with a beautiful white coat, and her name was Pearl. But to my mom it sounded like he had said Carl. Which is a name I just never hear associated with a dog. So have you misheard something and thinking it was true, you just couldn't believe your ears? Or maybe you know a dog named Carl and you are as incredulous as my mother was.

this takes me back to the year of 1968 when i was expecting my son. we hadnt decided on a name and obviously in those days, you didnt have scans. i rather liked the name , Karl for a boy or Karla for a girl. and what was i told ??? our friends alsation was called karla and you cant possibly name a child after a dog !! of course these days karl and karla are popular names. I also toyed with the name of Ivan ( another dogs name ?) my son was born and named after his dads middle name. but i have had pets with odd names, strawberry kit kat, whiskey, fred, tyson, by the way , i mis hear stuff all the time, so have learned to nod intelligently even if i cant understand a word thats being said . hohoho merry christmas !!! by the way i think the name Pearl is absolutely beautiful

Your post draw my interest as my son's name is Carl and he is a dog lover. I should tell him that a dog has been christined in his name and curious what his reaction would be like. My dogs names are sparky and Lala. I will never name a dog that human use in their names. It is not ethical.

When my new roomie moved in she speaks so softly that I thought she called her little cat Puff instead of Pudge. Well, she is fluffy and its about as inane a name as Pudge or Precious, I'm guessing Lightening got her name because she's got a white strip up her nose.

What a funny story AmbiePam ... although to be quite honest I don't think it would be a shocker if the dogs name actually was Carl. Some people are coming out with some crazy names for pets. I remember when pet names used to sound like pet names (Spot, Fluffy, Patches, etc) but now people are using human names! The only pet I have ever owned with a human name is the shih-tzu I have now. We got her when she was 2 so she was already named, her name is Katie!

I think what made it funniest was that it was a big, beautiful, female dog.

I've never heard of anyone naming their dog Carl. I have heard of people naming their dogs human names though. For example my grandmother's dogs name is Hannah and my cousin's dogs name is Luke. And we named our new little puppy Gracie. And I've heard of people naming their dogs names that you would associate with a dog. We have another dog named Hershey but we didn't name her because we got her from my husband's aunt and uncle and they had already named her. I've heard wierd names for animals before. And I know what you mean about people hearing things wrong because my grandmother does it sometimes and when she says what she thought she heard us say we sometimes get a good laugh out of it.

I have never heard of a dog named Carl before, but my dad has a dog named George. I hear things wrong all the time. I don't know if I am losing my hearing or if people are not talking clearly. I can normally figure out what they said after a few second though when what I thought I heard does not make sense.

Hmmm. My hubby has a hearing problem, and he's always hearing things differently than what was said. It can get quite comical. A few weeks ago on our local news, there was a fellow with a female dog and her puppy. He called them Madonna and Child.

That is an amusing story. It reminds me of my sister thinking that the Go-Go's song "Our lips are sealed" had the chorus "I am Cecile". It took some talking to convince her she was wrong!

Elvis - I ain't nothin' but a hound dog.....
I haven't hear of a dog named Carl, but I've heard John, Jack, Nick and Elvis given as dogs names. The Elvis one actually was a big old mixed breed hound dog...that's how he got his name. Most dogs that I've encountered with 'real' names have been owned by men. Maybe they're less imaginative when it comes to naming them? My dog is named Tukay. I got her in 1999 when all you heard about was Y2K, and I thought it would be funny when she did something wrong to say, "Why Tukay?".

Thanks! I've never actually said the "Why Tukay?" though. It's more like, "What the heck do you think you're doing???"

I haven't heard of a dog named Carl, but I also don't see why not, if you have a dog that looks like a Carl, then that would be a perfect name..I may have misunderstood someone, but at this moment I can't think of the situation..

Well I know that I often get "you need to clean your ears out" from family, but then again I always ask if I'm not sure what is being said.

Hahaha! I would have laughed, too, but I bet your mother was embarrassed once she learned that she had misheard him! Actually, I would not have thought it strange if the dog's name WAS Carl. I've had some pretty strange names for some of my dogs before. I had one named Elmo. He came with that name and it really did seem to fit him! I had a rabbit I named John, only because I wanted the LEAST bunny-sounding name I could think of for him. I've had other dogs named Chris, Sandy, Linus and Moonshine. My current cat's name is Bean and my dogs are Penny (Penelope) and Lilly (Lillith) So, I would have believed that dog's name was Carl. Of course, being a 'she' dog AND having that beautiful coat, Silver does seem a more sensible name.

I suppose Carl wouldn't be any stranger than some other names. I've seen dogs named Walter, Simon, Jack etc. Not typical doggie names. As for hearing something I couldn't believe that happened when my son was small and just learning to talk. In front of the minister one day he said what sounded to me like F-ck. I was shocked, and apologized to the minister telling him that obviously my son had picked up the bad word somewhere. I later learned he was trying to say Fox - from a book that he had read to him in the Church nursery. LOL
