Have you ever passed someone on a 2 lane road?

Even though passing a vehicle on a two lane road can be dangerous, do you do this? Have you ever done it? How about when it is dark at night or in certain conditions like when it is foggy out? Would you do it then? And while we are on the subject of 2 lane roads, have you ever passed a vehicle while driving on a levee road? I'll admit, I'll pass a driver if they are driving slow on a regular 2 lane road during the day, but only if it is safe to do so. And no way would I even attempt it in bad weather, like heavy fog. To me, it is just too dangerous. I remember a time I got lost while driving at night and somehow got onto a levee road. I don't mind driving on a levee road during the day, but at night it can be rather frightening, especially when I didn't know where I was going. Anyway, I guess I was driving too slow because one of the drivers behind me passed me by. I thought they were nuts to pass on a levee road, and even crazier to do it at night. If I would have tried something like that I probably would have driven the car right into the river! So what about you? Have you ever passed a driver on a 2 lane road?

I'm not a driver and so i have not tried it b4.. haha =D But to my frenz, it's the norm and they are always doing it especially when thecars in front is really slow.. ANd b4 they overtake, they will always make sure it's safe to do so and they will never pass a car or a bus nearing a curve as it's a blind spot.. luckily in singapore, we dun experience fog, and so most of the time, it's relatively safe to pass, but not recommended.. hehe

I don't like to pass, so I don't do it very often. Unless the person is going well under the speed limit I'll stick it out behind the driver.

Yes, I have passed on a two lane road, but only if there is no oncoming traffic. One needs to be sure that passing is allowed (no double yellow line, etc.) and that it is safe to do so. If passing is allowed and it is safe, I will pass the car in front of me if they are driving below the speed limit.

I never did this when i was still driving abroad... since it was very strict where i worked... and i was a new driver then... so i did not have the courage to break any rules... but here in my country... drivers always do that... even if it is not allowed... that is why a lot of accidents happen...

I've seen a few people break the traffic rules around here. I get nervous for them and those around them.

Here where I live now the two lane roads that I travel really are not safe to pass. The speed limit is usually around 35 to 45 miles per hour. The roads generally have too many curves to see far enough to pass another driver on. Most of them are marked as no passing too. When I lived out west the roads were pretty straight and you could see for long distances so it was much safer to pass a slower driver. As for levee roads I haven't been on one out here.

Where do you live? and some times you would get behind a farmer with his tractor and then the people behind you would get impatient and start passing. some times the farmer would signal when it was safe to pass too.

Part of my comment is missing. I typed that when I lived in Nebraska the farmers would be on the road.

The two lane roads where I live the speed limits are 45 and 55 mph. As most people go faster than the posted speed limit it isn't really safe to stay behind a slow poke. But at least the roads are straight.

It's always important to be careful when passing on these kinds of roads. Too bad not everyone is. Happy belated New Year to you too.

Some parts of the road in my place is badly maintained and overtaking another vehicle is dangerous as the road is not level especially on a two lane road. Drivers who overtake another car is at high risk especially at night and on rainy days. I would rather drive slowly then risk my life. Truly speaking, there is worse behaviour to be seen. Take lorry and bus drivers. They are terrible. They drive under the premise that since their vehicles are so large and weighty, everybody else will give way to them. It's a matter of might is right. I have a sense of dread and fear when lorries loaded or not with giant logs and crowded buses go tearing down the roads with no respect for people or of life. To them life is cheap. And perhaps if each of us is a little more courteous on the road, others, even bus and lorry drivers, will follow suit. So we should drive carefully and should not overtake indiscriminately.

Most of the roads around where I live are pretty much maintained, though there is at least one road that I know of that is in pretty bad shape. I usually avoid it as it's very lumpy. I don't blame you for dreading such drivers. People like that shouldn't be allowed to drive.

i have passed on a two lane road, if it was safe to do. there are a lot of two lane roads in texas, but for the most part it is flat and you can see way off, very few curves, hills etc. i will not do it in bad weather, were it is curvy, etc. i'm not in that big of a hurry. where i live now, in pa., for the most part it is not an option, with the mountains and lots of curves. just weeks ago while in texas on a two lane road, my daughter was driving, there were 4 vehicles ahead of us with a truck pulling a horse trailer at the lead and going slow. she opted not to try to pass due to the traffic in the south bound lane and our turn was coming up in a few miles. a southbound driver was not as smart! he tried to pass, didn't have enough room and took it too the northbound shoulder! he passed us (we were northbound) going south on the shoulder at approx. 85 miles an hour! luckily for everyone he didn't loose control, and got back over into the south bound lane. i did call it in to 911, reported the make of car, color and location. the dispatcher called back, repeated the discription and we were told the sheriff's dept had him stopped! so if you see something happen, and you have as passenger, let them call it in to 911, it can payoff.

I drove up in the mountains a few times before and had at least one person pass me on a curvy area where you can't see what's on the other side. I half expected them to crash into an oncoming car, but fortunately that didn't happen. I'd rather wait, than pass someone on a road like that. I never knew you could call 911 for something like that.

I once tried to during my driving lessons but my instructor told me off.... I was taking approaching a turn and a bus was in front of me and i had to pass the bus to turn so i started to move. When I was almost passed the door of the bus a lady came out the other one.

Hi sacmom I've passed a car on a two lane road. But only when it's safe. i remember one day, we all decided to go over to Baja and we took the back way into Tijuana, as you enter there is part where the center of the road everyone goes around like and if you don't know where you're going you'll be stuck there, anyway I had to follow one of the person that was going with us, If you don't know how to drive with these type of traffic you heck out of luck. anyway I made it through and on the way to our destination, there was a two lane road, and we had to use our blinkers to pass the truck or cars that were in front of us. this was at night. Never again, as soon as we got to the camping group, I'll had to get a drink, I was shaking so bad. And the people did it all the time.

Hi, sacmom! You betcha I have. I grew up in a rural area where nearly all the roads were two lanes. Like you, I tried passing only when safe but I did pass at night and occasionally during bad weather. It was something I never saw as unsafe. Whenever I return home for a visit I am amazed at the driving conditions I use to operate under; I was young and fearless. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. LOL

Yes I have. I live in the country and all of the lanes around here are 2 lane roads. I am very careful about it though. There are only a few places between here and town that I feel comfortable passing someone. I have been in a situation before that the person behind me thought I was not driving fast enough and they passed me in a no passing zone and I had to actually slam on my brakes because there was a car coming the other way and they were not going to make it and they were not backing off.

Yeah, I do it all the time, if they are going too slow, and its safe, I will go around them. Some people will pass me, even if theres a curve ahead, I'll only pass people if the road is straight and I can see way ahead of me, I don't like passing people at night either, its hard for me to judge distance, and at night I can't see very good, nor will I do it in bad weather or if its real foggy. I've never passed anyone on a levee road, I don't think I would either, its just not too safe, and I like being safe and driving safe all the time.

Growing up in the midwest you learn to drive on 2 lane roads because thats what most of them are. So yea, I've passed many a driver on 2 lane roads. I'm much more cautious though at night since my night vision is poor. And if the weather is bad I'm not in that big of a hurry anyway so I probably wouldn't pass. And since I have a fear of water I probably wouldn't have been on a levee road in the first place.

I grew up on the Oregon Coast where you have a great deal of two lane roads and slow cars holding up traffic. I find this to be very dangerous and would advise people to not do this unless you have perfect visibility for some distance. Actually, I would advise against it in any circumstance. A girl that went to our high school was killed by passing another vehicle on a two lane road. If this is something you are going to do please use extreme caution. Again, I would advise against it in any circumstance. Life is a beautiful thing and why pass and chance losing your life. Just take a deep breath and wait until they offer a passing lane.

That is terribly sad. Unfortunately the 2 lane roads around here don't have passing lanes. I rarely pass anyone, but when I do I make sure it is completely clear first.

They should have passing lanes but at least you're careful to not pass unless you are completely sure that no-one is coming. Have a safe a happy weekend. TGIF

I don't have a car and I don't really know how to drive. I do not know anything about driving. Cars are fascinating but I am afraid to drive. My brother use to drive me. He is quite reckless and sometimes I want to yell at him when he does bad driving. I had bad experiences with him driving and I decided not to have drive to anywhere I go. The foggy places you mentioned Oh My God!! He would take the risk and do it. I don't know what's wrong with my brother. He had our van wrecked because it fell down a cliff for his recklessness in driving. He never learned from that. He drives the same. I always pray for his life whenever he go out driving.

Yes I have passed another driver on a two lane road in the day light hours as well as at night. It's easier at night because of headlights, if I don't see any ahead of me then it's safe, providing that the others have their headlights on. Now on a foggy day, no way would I even consider doing it. I wouldn't do it on a levee either for it would be insane. Besides, the levee can't be but so long so I can wait.

True, it is easier to see cars at night when they have their headlights on, but what if a car didn't? Knowing that this could be a possibility keeps me from trying to attempt it when I am behind a slow driver at night.

I am guilty of this. I will only do it on a straight stretch, in the daytime, when I can see that there is clearly no one coming in the oncoming lane. I'm very cautious about doing it, but come on, what are u supposed to do when you're in a 45 & someone is doin 20 & you have somewhere to be LoL

Yep, this is when I pass too, so long as it is safe to do so. Like you, I've very cautious about passing someone on a 2 lane road, and avoid it when I can. But if someone is going well below the speed limit I'd rather pass them then ram them, or get rammed if someone's behind me.

Heyya sacmom! I have passed on two lane roads but only if I can see very clearly and for a good distance. At night...maybe but it would have to be well lighted road. I'm usually vey patient while driving but if I get behind someone driving abnormally slow..well...I'll pass em.lol

The 2 lane roads around here aren't well lit. Only a lamppost here and a lamppost there, if that. I guess I'd be more inclined to pass a slow driver at night if it was well lit, so long as it was safe to do so.

as i am from India thats common here we do it here always you cant reach your destination if you dont pass the vehicle here in India what ever may be the condition here even foggy or steep and curvy roads most of the roads in India are narrow and a country with most number of vehicles in the world so it may seem crazy that there are even single lane roads so the drives here should be careful and require more training i can bet than a Indian rider or driver can drive on any road in the world you can also find passing by speeding vehicles on such 2 lane and single lane roads with a speed of 80kmph so guess how dangerous is it to ride in India

i have but only if it is a long straight road. I will not pass at night because you never know what will happen. I have passed people at night(other direction) that had no lights. how can you ride at night with no lights? its dangerous and i love living too much to risk it. Like my grandmother used to say"if they are in that big of a hurry they should have left yesterday" i think people do some stupid stuff on the roads. what makes me mad is when someone gets behind me and can safely pass but insead ride my back bumper till they get to a curve then pass with oncomming traffic. um why do they have a license??
