Are you cutting costs by letting your hair grow?

I heard on Clark Howard yesterday (great show, saves me lots of money, check out his website at clarkhoward.com) that people are going longer between haircuts, women and men both are letting their hair grow and even doing coloring at home. I know that I'm one of them. I can't decide if I want my hair cut short or want to grow it but in the meantime I don't have to spend money on a haircut. I'm saving about $10 this way, assuming I get my hair cut every couple of months. Clark was saying how he was getting his hair cut and his stylist was angry with him for advocating this way of saving money--he was nervous having someone with scissors mad at him! Luckily, she didn't take it out on him or his hair! How about you? Are you changing your grooming habits to save money? I used to cut my kids' hair but I was so bad at it that my husband made me stop!

I don't think longer hair would save you money, I think the opposite, that short hair will save you money. It is not too hard to find a cheap haircut that looks reasonably good and you don't have to cut it too often, or at least I don't because mine doesn't grow all that fast. Not only will it save on shampoo and other styling products if your hair is shorter, but if you use a hair dryer or hair straighter/curler, etc. You are using much more electricity if you have a whole bunch of hair you have to work with than if you have just a little. I know I cut all my hair off a few months ago, after having long hair my whole life, and I found that I use a lot less of products and spend a lot less time with the hair straightner.

Long hair = pony tail. No styling products needed. short hair = hair cut every 6 weeks. $12-. Styling products (gels, sprays, etc.) Small drop of shampoo will wash any length hair.

I was never one to style my hair, just pulled it back and there it was. No curling irons or dryer, no mousse or anything. So it will save me money to let it grow. I might change my mind in the summer but for now I'll just let it grow and bank that haircut money!

Yes, but I do not know anyone with long hair that puts their hair up every single day. And you say you can use the same amount of shampoo? How about the same amount of water? Does it take less or more water to wash long hair?

But we have to spend for oil, shampoo every day which woluld be surel more than the hair cutting expenditure. Also you may face head aches and may let other lives on your head which will leads to additional expenditure. I am not interested in long hair growing because of the above.

The cost of a haircut where I live is $18, which is more than I spend in a year on shampoo even when I had long hair. I might quit using shampoo altogether--I'm going to experiment with baking soda or vinegar and see how that goes.

Wow! You must really have thick hair! I just had 7 inches cut off my hair after spending 2 years with long hair. I saved a lot of money over those years by avoiding the hair stylist. I do not use any less shampoo now than I did then. I have NEVER had a headache due to having long hair.

I think that is a good idea. I feel that anyway to save money is great. I myself am trying to grow my hair out. I am 25 years old and I feel that I want to have long hair before I get too old, lol. Right now my hair is about to the middle of my back and I am planning on growing it to my butt. I think it will take me about 2 years to do this but when I do I will be so happy. SO I am with you no more haircuts for awhile. happy mylotting and have a good day!

I'll bet your hair is beautiful! I always wanted mine that long, too, but I never knew what to do with it. I've had it as long as yours at times and loved the way it looked and felt. My hair isn't as thick now (I'm 54) but it's still wavy and has body to it.

Hmm...but to actually keep long hair..then wouldn't it consume more shampoo and conditioner products to keep it nice and clean? I've always commented that my sister should go get her hair cut since my shampoo seemed to be finishing so fast..:) Princess

You really don't need more shampoo for long hair and I dilute mine anyway. Your sister is probably using more than she needs!

Children get very picky when they're older, don't they? It was nice when I could just use the buzzers on my boys--they got picky and let their hair grow and now that they're 20 and 21 they're back to buzz cuts!

I have cut costs on my hair and let my hair grow very long. The last time I got it done at a salon was last April for a wedding and it cost me around $130 + tip). After that, I did my own hair dyes and straightened my own hair and just let it grow. Two days ago I went to the salon for my birthday and had it cut and styled. It cost me $50 + tip. The next time I go will probably be either mothers day or Christmas. My hubby and son get their haircuts every six weeks at a barber shop for around $28 + tip (together). We use to cut our sons hair too until he turned 5.

Wow, that's expensive!! But I'll bet it was fun. I remember when I thought I would cut my son's hair and save money. He was about 3 at the time and it just kept looking worse and worse! Finally I was done and he looked in the mirror and began to cry, saying "Mommy, don't ever cut my hair again!" That was the last time I did that! Later, we got buzzers and I buzzed the boys' hair until they were old enough to want to grow it out.

No, I'm letting my hair grow because my husband likes me having long hair. Though I've never really been into paying someone to get my hair cut. The last time I got my hair cut at a salon was when I was maybe 13 or 14 years old. But only because I didn't trust my mom cutting it. She always had the habit of cutting more than I wanted her to. She'd trim a little here, then a little there and before I knew it, it was the length she wanted! So finally I went to the salon one day to get my hair cut, but ironically it ended up being the length my mom wanted which is shoulder length. She said it makes me look cute. LOL As I couldn't think of a particular length when I was at the stylist's I automatically asked for shoulder length. UGH! LOL After my husband and I got together he started trimming my hair. Yep, I trust him enough to cut my hair. So I haven't had to pay anyone to have my hair cut in years. He did buy a flowbee a few years ago so he could cut his own hair. It's paid for itself and was a good investment, especially since I'm terrible at cutting hair. Okay, I'm not that bad, after all, I used to have to cut my oldest son's hair while he was fast asleep. But before that my husband thought I was just awful at cutting hair. I wasn't that I was awful, I just didn't want to cut his hair because it is so darn thick!

Moms are good at that, aren't they? Whenever my mom took me for a haircut the same thing happened, and one time I got a "pixie" cut--Eeewwww!! I also got a nick on my ear from the scissors!

I can't actually remember the lst time I paid for a haircut, or even had one for that matter! I guess Clark Howard would be preaching to the converted in my case :-) My husband does the kid's hair (I'm too nervous of making a mess of it to do it myself) and the pair of us just have our hair long.

Clark Howard is great, he's saved me a lot of money since I started listening to him. I like his website, too. It's nice of your husband to cut the children's hair, most guys don't have that much patience. Although my ex did enjoy using the buzzers on our boys!

Oh wow! I haven't heard him in a looooooooooong time! I love him and used to listen to him all the time on National Public Radio! Thanks for posting his website. He does have a lot of great money saving ideas and for me living on Disability I really need fresh ideas for saving more money. As for cutting my hair...........I haven't had a hair cut since I was 10 years old and I'm 50 now! LOL! As for coloring????? My hair is peppered with the prettiest silver strands and I get so many compliments on it. I've never liked the idea of coloring my hair. I don't wear makeup either! Hey, I'm a natural woman baby! You and I are a lot alike! I hate wearing makeup and won't do it. I don't color my hair, either, I think gray hair is attractive. Mine is more silver than gray, like yours, and I hope it gets all silver soon. Clark is also on TV, on HLN for an hour a day. He says he loves doing it but hates wearing makeup. We understand that, don't we!

Well I admit I have never thought of letting hair grow as a way of saving money, but then I have been cutting my own hair myself for the last 6 years so I guess I couldn't really apply it to myself anyway. I guess this could be useful for women as long as they keep their hair in good condition, but I think men would still need regular haircuts, as they may start to look odd when it gets a bit longer! Or perhaps men could get someone to cut it for them at home and save money that way?

I've been saving money on haircuts for 10 years . That's the last time I cut it short, otherwise a family member just trims the ends for me from time to time. I love Clark Howard. I can understand his stylists frustration - she's trying to make a living in tough times. But if she knows Howard, she knows that he recommends that people pay less and pick up his books secondhand rather than buying them new and giving him royalties, so she shouldn't be completely surprised.

I have never been to a salon to get my hair cut, I've always recieved hair cuts from family members, or, I quite simply cut my hair myself. It saves time and money in more ways than one! I don't have to worry about paying the fee at the salon, nor do I have to worry about paying for the gas it takes to drive there and back again.

Nah, I don't even let my parents cut my hair for free xD It's reaaally long now too, and technically, I need more shampoo to care for it...so I'm not really "saving" anything...even though I've never gone to a stylist or anything, heh. Still, it's my hair dangit. I hope it's down to my feet once I'm old!

Well, I've always cut Hubby's hair b/c he doesn't like to go to a barber and I was getting mine cut every other month at a cost of $17 a pop. Lately though I haven't had it cut...I just don't want to spend the money. I doubt I'll let it grow out but I'll wait longer between cuts. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**[/b]

I was going to let mine grow but on a very hot day in June I gave in and got it VERY short. I hope it grows out enough by the time hot weather comes so I can pull it back. I'm not sure if I prefer it short or long. My ex husband used to buzz the boys' hair and we saved money there, until they got to high school and wanted different styles!

Just reading all these discussions, I have mentally been adding up all the money I have saved over the last nine years. The average haircut for women in B.C. ranges from $38.00 to $45.00...my hair grows fast, so in order to keep a short style, without looking shaggy...I had to have it cut every 3 weeks...that's around $546 a year! In 9 years I have saved over $4000.00 not going to a salon! And I wouldn't have spent one tenth of that on shampoo/conditioners. I just trim the ends, and wear it up most of the time! Salons don't like people like me!

You will find the longer your hair gets...the easier it is for you to trim! Thank goodness, my mother-in-law gave me a extremely good pair of Barber's scissors! There are so many ways to wear your hair up...I notice the pony-tail is mostly mentioned...and that's when I will get a headache! Braids are completely acceptable...and normally I just twist my hair and poke a big hair spike thru it! I work outdoors in the summer...and it is so nice to have it up off of my neck! I do not wash my hair daily, I don't see that it is necessary...in summer/winter, I wash a coupla hours before going to bed (I guess that I am used to it) cause I sleep like a baby with a cool head! I can't remember the last time I used a hair dryer! Watching a program on CBC the other nite..."Marketplace" and they were doing trials with all the high priced shampoos..and there was not one..better than the cheap lines! But it did suggest, that no matter how much you rinse, all of the a de-tanglers, enhancers, etc., leave a residue on your hair...and it is wise to rinse with diluted vinegar or lemon juice, every few washes! I know this is long...but I had a dear friend...a Medical Dr., whom has the most beautiful snow white hair...HE NEVER washed it...each morning rubbed it with oatmeal, then a thoroughly good brushing with a stiff brush with a nylon stocking over it! His hair sparkled and shone! Have a great weekend!

I am actually letting my hair grow because I want to save money. I was going to grow it out anyway but usually get it trimmed and thinned out as my hair is very thick. But I have waited not wanting to spend the extra money. We have so much to save for and my husband got laid off so every cent is important right now. In fact it is time to color my hair as well but it will have to wait for a while. My hair needs a trim but I can make it look good for right now so it is okay to wait. When it gets out of control then I will get the trim.

I colored my hair for awhile when it first began getting grey but I don't know why I did that. Grey hair is part of aging and I can't deny I'm growing old so now it's about half and half, mostly in the front. I'm glad I went back to natural. I'm letting mine grow, too, I just hope it grows long enough by summer that I can get it off my neck!

You are so sweet and thoughtful to allow money for your wife to splurge on her hair! Most men your age don't care much about romance anymore but you seem willing to make her feel pretty and special. Hey, welcome to myLot!! I hope you enjoy your time here and make a lot of new friends. This is a fun place and the money comes in handy. Be sure to include pictures if you have a digital camera, they pay you for them if they are original. Turn on your "notify" for all your friends so you'll know when they post something and you can reply. That's a good way to have fun and make money. Hope to see more of you! I'm making a friend request!
