Waste not want not!

Dregs of ketchup! - ketchup bottle
@Humbug25 (12540)
February 12, 2009 1:15pm CST
When I am nearing the bottom of a ketchup bottle I turn it upside down and do the same with the mayonnaise jar so that the dregs will run down to the neck of the bottle/jar and a can scrape out the remnants! I also add water to the last inch or so of washing up liquid in order to get the last little bit out. Do you do this to any of your products at home? How do you get the last of anything out of a tube, bottle or jar?

I do it with ketchup and shampoo and conditioner. For things that are scraped out such as mayonnaise, jam, peanut butter, I just get as much as I can out of the jar with a knife.

That is also a good way to save on shampoo in deed. I do that from time to time. I like to save as much shampoo as possible. Dealing with peanut butter is not easy that is for sure. Same problem with trying to turn over a jelly jar!

Hello dawny Yeah you might be waiting some time for peanut butter to run to the neck of the jar once turned upside down eh? Thanks dawny!

hi humbug25...i just added some water to the soap pump. i was only getting bubbles out for soap and i knew there was still some soap clinging inside the bottle so i helped to "release it." and a few days ago i did that with the noxema bottle. get your money's worth.

Hey there greenglitterturtle Yeah, you've paid for it you might as well get what you can out of the container!! I didn't know that noxema comes in bottles now. When I was over in the States it was only available in tubs but then that was nearly 15 years ago now!! Thanks for your response

yeah in my opinion the noxema pump stem or straw whichever doesn't go close enough to the bottom. i often have it upside down to get the remainder out and then added a little water. i ended up getting a few more months out of it so it was well worth it. you have good day.

Lol, I do exactly all those things. Even to adding a little water to my dish detergent to make it last longer. Especially the ajax brand because it's already thick so adding water to it won't make it so watery and still soaps up well. I also turn all my shampoo bottles upside down and use every last bit. Some people might think that's a little desperate but I'm one who likes to use every penny I've paid for my stuff. Don't care what anyone thinks, I paid for it so that's how I will use it:)

Hello happymommy3 I haven't worked out how to get the last of the toothpaste out of the tube yet apart from cutting it open and I haven't gone that far yet! LOL Thanks for your response

That's the only way I know how! Do that for detergent, anything really. Well I guess not mayonnaise but I don't mess with that enough to do it in the first place.

It is important to save these days what with the prices skyrocketing. I do find myself turning over the ketchup or barbecue sauce from time to time unless I know that I have back up in the cupboards.

i don't add water but i do turn them upside down. as for a tube such as lotion i cut them in to where you can get it all. you'd be surprise how much will be left in a tube.

I squeeze the toothpaste tube until I can't get another possible drop out of it. I squeeze and squeeze and squeeze. I can make an empty tube last at least another week!

Hiya Humbug, I never do it..shame on me. Just something I never think to do. The only product I do do it with is shampoo and even that one is down to my daughters efforts not mine, she's the one that turns them upside down to get the maximine out..I will hold my hands up it's her not me...it doesn't bother me enough to do it but it does my daughter she always trys to get every last bit out of ketchup because she's the one that uses it the most.

With any thing that comes in a squeeze bottle with a small neck i always store up side down because the ketsup or mustard some times separates as it sets. It keeps the first squeeze from becoming separated and watery. I don't use the squeeze bottle of mayo because it is so hard for me to squeeze them I also store the salad dressing up side down as the get down to about the last bit. As for the tubes products I have some of those things that you slid on the tube and push the tooth past up as it is empties. When I get to the very top I cut it open to get the last bit. Back when the tooth past came in metal tubes it was easier to get most of it out.

The squeeze works great. It keeps pushing the tooth paste or any thing else toward the top of the tube. I don't know what I would do with out them. It keeps the product moving and all together. They are pretty cheap for what they do. I would recommend them to every one that has tubes of stuff.

Hi deebomb I have often wondered if those slidey things for toothpaste tubes really work, I guess they must do if you use one!! I too am old enough to remember the metal tubes but once you had started rolling them you couldn't get them undone very well and sometimes they would get a hole in them from where they had been bent oh what a mess but better!! Thanks for your response

I am just as frugal as you are. I even keep the ketchup bottle with the little remains on the bottom, till I make spagetti sauce and then I add some water to the ketchup bottle and I mix it really good and use it in my sauce. I don't waste any of it at all. I do the same with my barbeque sauce and hp sauce or anything like it. My mayo jars are scraped clean before I wash them and use them around the kitchen. I rarely through one out. When it comes to washing soaps I add water to the bottle to get all of it out. I do that with dishwasher soap and laundry soap and dish soap and shampoo and cream rinse, anything that I can. When it comes to my tube of toothpaste I hold it down on the sink top and squeeze every bit out I can with my toothbrush. I don't waste anything. Yesterday I took in all of my empties that we get money back for, and I got $24.40. I was in heaven. So yes, I do whatever I can to save some money and I don't waste a thing. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

I do that too, turn the bottle over, but have also put them on a newer bottle and drained that last little bit for shampoo and stuff. Also if you use dryer sheets, you can use an old rag and add a little fabric softerner and it is much more frugal than buying dryer sheets. A bottle will last you LOTS longer that way. I also add water into the last little bit of dish liquid to get out the last little bit.

I dont use ketsup but they mayo or mustard i have rubber spatulas which a use to get the stuff out scraping side as i go. For soaps the last bit i do add little water to get the last drop.

The rubber spatulas im talking about are made for that and are only an inch wide. I have one that is 1/2inch wide too. Im not talking about the ones you cook with. But of coarse you still would not be able to use in ketsup bottles. But they are excellent for mayo. unless you get the squeezable mayo. If i have a bottle like salad dressing when i get to the last drops i keep them bottom up so all the last is at the opening.

Hi there agirlfromtomorrow Hahaha yeah it would but I only add water to things like shampoo or washing up liquid. Sometimes I do add a tiny bit to a can of soup just to get the last bit out but with Campbels you have to add water anyway don't you so you get no waste there at all Thanks agirlfromtomorrow

O! then humbug that's the way we do it too, I even do it to Hair conditioners. it just annoys me to throw something when I know there are some still left inside. here in Egypt we have a juice can that have chunks of fruit inside and some times you could hear the last piece of pineapple trapped inside, I usually cut through the can to get it.

When I am running low I open the new bottle and then I sit the old bottle upside down on the new one and let it sit for a bit. Then the old stuff slowly settles on top of the new stuff and I can toss the old bottle. This way I also use the old stuff first. It has worked so far.

YEP, I do it too. I turn the bottle upside down with the openin of the old bottle aligned with a new bottle so the remaining of the ketchup, syrup and the such can run from on bottle into the other. I add water to my shampoo and conditioner too. I don't waste a drop. My husband laughs at me, but I don't care. I'm the one that has to stretch the grocery budget so I'll do whatever it takes to use every drop of my products. I will scrape every drop of peanut butter out of the jar. How about toilet paper? My downs syndrom sister in law lives with us and it kills me that she replaces the toilet paper roll when there's still some paper on it. I use it to the very last sheet.
