Do you eat things past expiration date?

I was thinking about this last night as I looked at my gallon of milk that was 2/3's full yet and it expired yesterday. Do I dump it? Do I drink it for a day or so more? I have a bad sense of smell when it comes to food going bad so I always have hubby sniff for me *LOL* I'll eat bread as long as it's not getting yucky after exp. or make bread crumbs. And I think most things like crackers & cereal just get stale but don't really get "yucky". How bout you? What don't you mind eating after the EXP printed on the box? Do you believe the Exp on the box is accurate for most food items?

Normally, when I buy things, I will look at the expiry date to be extra careful. I don't want to take the risk of getting sick because of food poisoning. I heard from somewhere before that usually the expiry date printed on the packaging especially for dry food is not the actual expiration date. They normally put three months earlier than the actual date.

I do look @ the exp date on diary especially when you are picking it off the shelf. I once bought some yogurt that was a week past exp! Trust me I was back at the store demanding my money back! & I got my money back too!

No way, Jose! My mom is constantly telling me things are "still good" when I am at her house and I look into her fridge. She was insistent that her milk was still good three days after the exparition date until I made her sniff it. She's like that even with medicine. What, it expired two years ago? It's still good! But I don't care. I don't mess around with medicine. If it says it is expired, I'm not touching it. Even if it is over the counter medicine.

Your mom must know my in-laws! They always try to buy things that my kids like when they come over like strawberries, grapes, tomatoes... but they look like they are on their last leg sometimes. I know she doesn't want to waste things (if you recall my discussion about the pickle a few weeks back) but if it's starting to go south you don't serve it to guests ya know?!?! But she was surprized the kids didn't eat much of it, cause I told them not to... if I wouldn't eat it in that condition I"m not letting my kids. Of course we have to keep it hush hush cause we don't want to hurt MIL's feelings. They say though w/ OTC meds that it's just the potency more than anything. When I'm out of say feaver reducer and my kids are sick in the middle of the night if I have the bottle that exp'd last year I'd rather use it in a pinch than not use anything at all til the stores open.

Food does not become instantly inedible the instant that it's passed it's use - by date. People just need to use common sense, if the milk has not gone sour and curdled it will be good to use, and it won't kill you even if it had gone off. I'd treat other foods and especially fish and meat with more caution though. Especially fish. In other words, I'd rely on my own common sense and sense of smell in deciding if food is still good to eat. But sinse I hate having to throw food out, I have been known to eat things that really should have been thrown out - with dire consequences.

Someone told us once that the products usually have one month allowance after the expiration date. So it can still be consumed. But when it comes to dairy products, I do not want to take risks anymore. My husband scolded me once for trying to eat expired food. He said the amount of money I save for the eating the food will not be worth the suffering should I have a bad tummy condition or food poisoning.

That is true! I'd rather toss than get a tummy ache! I've had food poisoning that is the most horrid tummy ache & cramping & such a person would ever want. Makes the flu look like a cake walk in a way.

i had it too,,. and because i know i just eating an expired food , my stomach feel so bad. and i promise to my self not to eat it anymore. I ever read a suggestion from an expert that say, " do not eat a food within expire in three month." So do not eat food when it exp. date just three month remain. Believe it or not.

May we know what credentials does the referred expert have and what his basis for such suggestion?

You don't need to worry about that because chocolates have allowances for the expirations usually it is 6 months allowance from the date in the label. Milk is more troublesome if you still consume it even if it is expired already in the label because bacteria in the milk reproduce faster than in any other products.

Your milk should be good for a few days. Expiration dates are more like "best by" dates, although with dairy products you have a smaller window of quality. Sure, I'll eat food past the expiration, especially if it's marked down, but if its meat or dairy I'll look very carefully at it before I buy it.

I do all the time. If it's canned or processed, there really is no reason not to eat it. I had a case of expensive French mustard I got for free because it expired. I gave it to my dad who used it for a year or two until he ran out. It was fine. I won't eat bread after the expiration date, but I won't eat bread that's more than 2 days old. I like my bread really fresh. I'll turn my bread into bread crumbs or give it to the birds or my dog if it's old.

I will as long as it smells good and ok. You can't rely that much on the label of the expiration date because that label is only approximation especially if it is chocolates. If it is dairy products, I'll avoid to consume it but it is seldom to happen that we can consume such over stored products in the cabinet.

Expiry and 'use by' dates are more a guideline than an instruction. The date can only be an average, as foods behave in different ways depending on how they are stored. I have had yogurts which are still fine a week or more past their expiry date and ham which has gone off before the expiry date. If it looks good and smells good, I'll try a little, and if it tastes okay, I'll eat it. My friend has a neighbour who won't use anything past its expiry date, so she passes it to my friend. I wish I had a neighbour like that! Some time ago, I was making a pizza for tea. I noticed that the first jar of tomato topping I took from the cupboard was about two years out of date. Rather than throw it away, as it looked fine, I tried it. It was delicious, and everyone enjoyed the pizza, although I didn't tell them about the expired topping. A few weeks later, I made another pizza, this time with a new jar of topping. The family said it was very nice, but not as good as the previous pizza, which everyone agreed was the best one I'd ever made! Just goes to show, doesn't it?

It happens to me as well when I do not notice that the expiration date of something I ate has already passed liked chocolates or something. It gets me worried a bit but when a day has passed and nothing happens to me then it is fine with me. But there are some stuff that I will always check on the expiration date on. I guess I learned checking on it when I had my son.

well, if it's expired then it should be disposed. there's a reason why they have expiry dates posted on food. i have eaten expired food before. however, i can instantly taste that a food is bad so i just throw it up. to be safe, if it's expired please do not consume it. why would you risk having a diarrhea? medical treatment is more expensive than the food you just ate.

No, we do not eat things with past expiration date. We are very keen in this matter. While purchasing such packed goods, we see the expiry date and buy only required quantity so that it would be consmed within date. We must take care of this to avoid illness due to consuming goods with past expiration date and also save money. Thanks.

I eat some foods past expiration date.I think there is no harm in eating them, maybe only the taste is different. I have once tried eating an expired ham and nothing happened.

As far as the milk goes, dairy products are supposed to be at least 7 days after the expiration date. I always smell things and if it isn't too far out of date I will probably eat it. It kinda just depends on what it is. I am always smelling the meat when I open the package, even sometimes when not even expired I have encountered spoiled meat.

I think most people will eat some things over the expiration date. I have done it as well. We do the same thing with milk. We do make sure that it is ok to drink etc. By smelling and having a little taste as long as it's not getting chunky. If the milk isn't open it will last up to 8 days if it is unopened I beleive it is. But the key with that is you have to pretty much down it. With bread I just make it into bread crumbs and croutons for salads. Cereal will be a little bit before it goes stale so once it has that stale taste it gets tost.

Never use the things after expiry date. Some boxes does not mention expiry date but then it is cleary written that it can be used within 12 months of mfn date so that way u can decide its expiry. Some medicines are safe to use 2-3 months after expiry also but then more months after expiry is angerous. So always look for expiry date when u go for shopping.
