only took 42 days to go 5 miles! But I'm happy I've finally had a bill get a "hit" http://www.wheresgeorge.com/report.php?key=b2008c609410c3f84c10f25d181832936360f1393e1fbe03

My kids and I used to do that and it was so much fun to track the bills! Although it's a federal offense to deface money, I think they overlook this particular set of circumstances because it's so entertaining and educational! We tracked a bill that went from Phoenix to Indiana to Ohio to Maine in a week.

There is a link to what exactly defacing money is on the site. As long as you don't interfer with the security features (on the 5s, 10s, new bills) and you don't render the bill unusable or tear it so as not to be usable, writing or stamping it is not considered defacing it.

I stamp in the outside edges and I don't use blue ink (makes trouble for vending machines, blue ink for some reason). Check out the FAQs and it will give you the link to what exactly the definition of defacing paper money is in the USA.

Very cool! I didn't know that this site existed! I'm going to give it to my daughter who is an education major. It would be a great class exercise! I also have several friends from our homeschooling days that can enjoy this site. They could use it for geography, history and math exercises! Keep me updated on where else the bill goes!

I think I've tried a similar site to "Where's George" a few years back, only the currency being tracked in that case was the Euro..entering the Euro note information on the site was too fiddly and time consuming for Me to maintain my interest,so I haven't used it in a while! Good to hear you got a hit on one of Your notes :)

It was easy to enter the bills, so I didn't have any trouble with the bills, so to finally getting a hit was exciting!

I see. They do the same sort of thing with books that are left in public places.

It's weird you started this discussion...LOL. I too just got a bill with the wheresgeorge.com stamped on it...so went there...Hey, my bill traveled farther It started it's journey from Saint Helens, Oregon on May 15, 2009, and traveled 2,448 miles in 157 days, 20 hours 59 minutes on at average of 156 miles per day to get to me here in NY--wonder where it was in the meantime

Good for you! Congrats! I've been averaging one hit per month. I've got three counties and two states now. Someone in 12901 (Plattsburgh, NY)area code got a hit from the UK and someone got a hit from Oregon at 12953 (Malone, NY). I've gotten NY, CT (that was a big surprise). I thought it would take a year to get a hit outside of NY State at the rate I was going. I've got some stealths out there, we'll see if they get any hits. Goodness gracious, you typed all those numbers in? What patience and persistance you have.

I sure didn't do them all at once, I have, at most, done about 8 bills, but remember, I did do data entry at one time so a lot of numbers cause me no problem

8 bills and a hit is extrordinary (spelling?). I had 50 before I got a hit (I do a lot of cash transactions)and I've heard of people having to do 100 or even 500 and several months before they got a hit. That's terrific!
