Is genetically modified food(GM food) safe to eat?

Genetically modified foods - According to some medical specialists, genetically modified foods are as safe to eat as foods made from plants modified by more traditional methods of plant breeding. But at the same time, most people are refused to eat the GM foods for its potential dangers.

Have you heared of genetically modified foods(GM food)? When genetically modified foods appeared several years ago, I remember that most people in my country were interested in GM food, but now, more and more people have been actively protesting against GM foods for various reasons. Now, when buying some foods, most people tend to check the label first to make sure it's not the GM foods. It seems that lots of people are concerned about GM food. It is obvious that GM food has its supporters. But until we know for sure, I'd like to be on the safe side. So, what is your opinion on the GM foods? Is it good for our health? Would you eat GM food?

No, I would not eat GM food. Though GM food is not a rage in India as yet and we buy mostly fresh local produce from the markets everyday, I was reading in the papers a few weeks back about GM food. It seems that a particular strain of eggplant has been developed by GM method which makes the eggplant fruit resistant to boring worms…I’m sure you know that worms are a big pest of eggplants and causes huge loss to farmers growing eggplants so if implemented and marketing widely, this GM eggplant is sure to benefit farmers in the long run. However, as I said, I would not touch it really until and unless it’s the only option available. Tinkering with the genetic code of anything somehow does not keep it original anymore…it kind of becomes artificial or adulterated…I think this would play always at the back of my mind.

Although the genetic modification might improve eggplant yields, it might also cause catastrophic damage to the ecosystem. What eats worms? What relies on worms to survive? Track it high enough up the food chain, and I'm sure there will be an impact on humanity somewhere. I think it's very short-sighted to only focus on the yield of the crop (and the profit), than consider the longer-term impact.

Very very true...that is why there is a huge debate going on right now whether this particular variety would be introduced in the markets. But tell me something, I've heard that rice and wheat seeds have also been tinkered with to increase their yields and better their quality and over the years, this has helped a poor country like India to becoem self-sufficient in food...is that the same as GM varieties or is it something different?

Why would anyone want to eat GM food? There is nothing wrong with food that it needs to be improved upon in the first place. What is found in nature is perfect it doesn't need so-called scientists and engineers screwing with it. It exists the way that it does for a reason.

we're not sure wether the genitically foods are safe or not. so, we'd better wait and see.

I definitely do not agree with GM Foods! It is just another thing that we humans are doing to mess with nature. There is so much that we do not understand about nature as it is a very complex system that has taken millions of years to evolve. Over the last few hundred years, we humans have destroyed a hell of a lot of ecosystems that nature carefully built because these scientists thought they could improve on nature! It is time to stop messing with nature and work with it. I believe that Permaculture is the key to a sustainable and healthy future, not genetically modifying foods! If you want to know more about Permaculture, here is a good site that I subscribe to. (not a referral program) http://permaculture.org.au

I heard GM food. But i don't understand it very well.in my country many people don't meet it .and we don't eat it.so i don't know whether it is good for our health.maybe it's good,at least no harmful. i think the scientist need to give the better and true explanation to people

I have read some article regarding " GENETICALLY MODIFIED GOO" or GM food. I don't know if I'm sure last year I read one article. They said it's not good for the body. If that is so , why promote it, if it is not safe for the people.

I really do not know what since there is really no serious study on it if it indeed has an effect on us who consumes it. Right now I guess that is the reason why there is less food shortage around the world because of these GM products that they were able to modify the genes to produce high yield variety of certain food products or animal produce. I think if it is indeed harmful for us it has shown its signs this early because I do believe that most of the food products we eat are a product of GM technology in some ways that is why many can meet the demands of our growing population.

Hi getbrowser, this debate will go on for a long time yet, and there are many who believe GM foods are the way of the future, but many also have the opposite view. As far as I'm concerned, if it's not broke, why fix it. I'm happy with what I've been eating, so why change!

I would rather not, but I do not think there is any way we are going to be able to avoid it unless we grow all of our own food or buy only from local farmers whom we know and not everyone can do that. Like you, I would rather be on the safe side and the more they tell us that food is really OK, the less I believe it.

I don't think the genetically modified food is too hurtful, it is the hormonally changed and so forth that is harmful to us.Everything has to been done in a hurry now days and it is cool that they have the technology to genetically change things to make them better in some way. Sort of weird though too.

I do not know if it is good or bad for us...and i do not even think that the people producing it know. I believe that they are experimenting on us too see. and i fear down the road a lot of people are going to get sick from it...Only my opinion...and i also check the labels and stay away form it...

Base on some research of those scientist. This is safe to eat. Because if we look into that effect. This is really planted but there are some changes as to the real plant is concern...

...i dont know... but really think that this has a lot of positive potentials in many aspects of our lives. but if i'd go for it.. i think i have to wait for the technology to mature coz right now i think that they haven't pefected it yet, i guess.

Most people don't understand what genetically modified foods are, so they don't realize the health problems they can cause. When our bodies digest a carrot (whether white or orange or purple) it recognizes it as a carrot. When the genes of that carrot are modified in a laboratory, it becomes something different. Genes of animals are spliced into it and so it becomes something never seen or anticipated in nature. Our bodies are confused by it as they should be. Since GM foods have come on the scene, food allergies have risen alarmingly, digestive health problems are of concern and world food farming and storage are at risk. This corporation has created sterile seed so that farmers must buy new seed each year. That means that seed can't be saved so if a very bad growing year happens, our food supply is threatened. Besides all of that, a huge corporation is claiming ownership of these foods. When plants grow, they require fertilization to produce food, and if the field of a farmer next to a GM field is organic or whatever, the GM food genes get into it, making it worthless to its market. There are many, many problems with GM food. I wish people would do some research before making up their minds about it.

When we do talking about any type of processed food, the first part or section to look is its expiry date. Next imperative point is the label of content which is a must view, read, focus, select, and decide. Absolutely, knowledge in food health nutrition is much needed for our decision making because what we eat it's the thing to be our blood. About GM type of food as you highlighted, so far I can accept whatever product produced by KFC and my next prime selection is it's organic related type of food.

Hi,friend,GM food is no way concerned with health point. Those words are all baseless. There is difference between organic and inorganic food in influencing health as pesticides traces may in food in inorganic food.In the initials days we faced protest against introduction of Hybrid varieties..then B.T.[Bacillus Turengenesis]cotton,B.T. Brinjal.[egg plant] Now the term is G.M. food.Actually Genetically modified food means- 1]We can get all vitamins..proteins..what ever human body need,we can incorporate /identify pest and disease resistant genes and incorporate in G.M. food crops by genetic engineering method. So no worry and i am strong supporter of G.M food that is based on present need of the world. It is my duty to respond this as i am a scientist in Genetics and Plant breeding and now my main research work is on evolving high yield hybrids in Chilly crop. Have a nice time.

I remember when I was in high school (around 8 years ago), our Economics teacher was a staunch advocate of the anti-GMO (genetically modified organisms) campaign. She would tell us how unsafe it would be for humans to eat such. As what my teacher used to tell us, "GM is unfit for human consumption". I do believe this. It may be the solution to world hunger, but the long-term effects of having such modifications in the food are yet to be known. It may contain all of the needed nutrients by the body, but is the structure perfect enough? Would it really cause more good than harm? If there are deleterious effects because of eating them, what would the world do? So, no, I will not take the chance of eating GM food. I'd still go for natural, organic, and non-modified food.

I have heard of genetically modified food and I remember when it came out people were very dubious about it. I know that there hasn't been extensive testing on this, there is also a concern that these foods promote anti-biotic resistance as this is part of the GM process. I don't think I would eat it (who knows if I have already) the long term effects haven't been tested enough. I prefer organic and natural foods but I do not know if everything is labelled correctly. For all I know some foods I have consumed could be GM foods or derived from GM ingredients. I would avoid these foods until they have been tested further.

Well you eat genetically modified food everyday.. even carrots are genetically modified they use to be white in color and they are suppose to be good for you. So I guess it depends on what exactly you are going to eat... some food would be ok and some food not. Food like soy beans for soy milk would be great if they could genetically modify it and take out the estrogen so that little boys who have to drink it because they are lactose intolerant would not grow a little 'chest' like a girl come puberty time. There's good and bad in everything!
