Do you always answer your phone?

Today my phone has been ringing, ringing, ringing... And since I don't recognize the numbers that are coming up on my caller ID I don't answer them unless they are local numbers. I run my own small business and I answer all local calls because I never know when it could be a call for business. But the long distance calls and the toll-free calls I opt not to answer. So, my question to you today is do you always answer your phone when it rings? Do you depend on the caller ID to let you know who is calling? Just tell me about how you deal with your telephone.

Hi, I always answer the phone. Sometimes, no ID is displayed I still answer the call because it may be an important call. On some rare occasions, I returned recognised nos. They may be important business calls.

We live in 21st century. We have to take some risk.By answering phone that has no ID display may be crank call or may be important call.

You do have a good point and perhaps I should start answering my phone on a more regular basis because of the fact that it could be an important call that I choose not to take.

That's why I like my caller ID so I do not have to answer some of the phone calls. That way I can pick and choose who to talk too. If I do not recognize or it does not show up it depends upon how I feel whether I will answer or not.

You are right but sometimes I would rather not answer the phone then listen to the conversation on the other end.... I am not trying to be mean but sometimes you do not want to hear about other peoples ailments when you yourself are in pain.... Its seems some people no matter how bad you feel always feel worst than you do.....I do not like to complain all the time like that....I try to look at the postitive in my life and not always focus on the negative.

I think it is the reason that a lot of people like caller ID. You have the ability to pick and choose your calls. However, I also think that is the reason that a lot of people that make the calls don't like caller ID.

It depends on who it is...if it is someone that I know I will normally answer the phone but if I don't recognize the number on my caller ID then I won't answer it. Our number has been in my husbands family since he was a little boy..first his grandmother had it then when she passed his mother took it and then when his mother moved out of state and obviously couldn't take the number we decided to take it so we do get a lot of calls still for my husbands mom and his brother who used this number as a message phone when it was my mother in laws...we have told these people that this is no longer their number but they continue to call so we don;t answer the phone any longer when they call....

I also just remembered because we just got a call for them but we also get a lot of calls for my nephew and his family because their number is the opposite of ours. It sometimes gets very annoying....

I understand that. I've had the same number for a very long time as far as my cellular phone goes, so I don't really get calls for other people. However, my mother does have that happen to her from where my friend used to live with us at her house and from other people that have just randomly decided to use her phone number.

I try to always answer the phone. I have talking caller ID but sometimes it just says Pennsylvania and it was my aunt or a friend. Sometimes I can't make out what it is saying and it takes me soo long to get to an extension to see what it says, I just answer it or call the person back if they leave a message. I hate when I try and get to the phone and then just when I do the person hangs up and doesn't leave a message. I am disabled and I can't always get to the phone before the machine picks up and all of my friends know that but there are still a few that won't leave a message.

I've never seen talking caller ID but that does sound pretty cool. I suppose it is also very helpful to you so that if it isn't an important call you don't have to break your neck trying to get to the phone.

Yes I had heard of talking caller ID but I thought you had to pay for a special service or something. It was just on the phone. There are also different rings, so you can tell who is calling. I forget which ring is for who though. I really like that I can hear who it is, so like you said I don't have to break my neck for a telemarketer, and even if there is no message I sometimes know who it was that called.

You are the second person that has said to give them a call to see if they answer their phone. That is so funny, I'm not one to call someone that is pretty much a complete stranger.

I always screen my calls. I don't want to talk to telemarketers. I can be pretty sure any call coming from a 416 (Toronto) area code is someone trying to sell me windows. Yes, always windows. I am on the "do not call" registry but that only applies to telemarketers. I still get charities calling me. I try to screen those but am usually unsuccessful. Now I am getting these calls on my cell phone. I got one today which I think was a recording (I hung up before I could find out) about some resort. I don't give me cell phone number out to just anyone so this really bugs me. If my husband isn't home and there is a call for him from someone I don't want to talk to (ie I know they will keep me chatting on the phone forever), I won't answer it. If they want to leave a message on the answering machine they can. Most of the calls my kids get they get on their cell phones now, but I will answer calls for them. Sometimes my daughter hasn't taken her cell phone with her and she could be calling me from that neighbour's house, for example. I wouldn't give up my caller ID for anything!

I too couldn't possibly give up my caller id. My in-laws just recently did that and it drives me crazy to know that they are living without caller ID. We don't have a home phone, only my cell phone which also serves as our primary phone number and my husband also has a cellular phone as well. My children are both still way too young to have cellular phones of their own.

I'm the same as you. I don't answer a call from a number that isn't local or that I don't recognize. I stopped when some company that uses call centers in various states kept trying to offer me a warranty on my 12 year old car.

I am also .. opt .. some numbers which are known by me.... some people who only wate time .. i avoid the call from them,.. for nay new numbers i pickup... because i dont know.. that who is caller... so I pick up and know about that caller... So it is depending on numbers from which calls are incoming.....

I have done it this way to a certain extent as well. When I see a number that I totally don't recognize, either the area code or the actual number I will give the caller one chance. However, after that I won't give them another chance if they are not someone that I want to talk to.

Our caller ID only works if the TV is on, so I am unable to screen all calls. It seems a waste of time and energy to answer all the solicitations that we get. They are especially annoying at this time of year. They will not take "no" for an answer.

You know, until I was taking a survey today I never knew about the caller ID that comes through the television. That is a very neat way of doing things. However, it wouldn't do a lot of good for me because I am always on the computer, not watching the television.

welp i always answer my cellphone even if i dont recognize the number but my house phone i rarely answer cause its always tell-a-marketers or toll-free i guess calling which gets really annoying so we just let the house phone ring and trust me its always ringing lol && also everyone thats anyone knows that if they need to get in contact with me it'll be through my cell phone never my house phone...b/c when it rings i dont even bother to look at the caller Id b/c i already know who it is by assumption so if you really needed me then calling my house phone wouldnt be a good idea.

With me, my home phone and my cell phone are one in the same. When we moved into our house, we wanted to have as few unneccessary expenses as possible and because of the fact that I've had my cellphone since I was a teenager it seemed logical to keep that and forego having a home phone.

Since having a Blackberry, my cell phone keeps ringing all the time because it notify use if there is an e-mail, new chat in blackberry messenger, yahoo messenger or msn. I simply use vibrate mode to shut them all. In case of phone in the office, until now I always pick them up since usually it is office related and must be answered. If I am in a situation where I don't want to pick up the call, then I would just ignore the call. The caller usually will e-mail or text me if that happens

I don't have a Blackberry or a smart phone at all, so I don't have that to deal with. As far as the office aspect of things, since I have my own business, that is the reason that I choose to answer all of the local calls that come in to me.

my husband hates to anwser the phone, so i am usualy the one who answers most of the calls, even if he is right beside it, he will not answer it , it drives me nuts.. i will answer it if it is a number i know, but if it is a strange number, i usualy dont answer the first time, i will try and see if i can figure out who it is by going thru my numbers.. but if they call back a second time.. i will answer it lots of times i wish i had'nt .. if it is a sales call for me i will ask them if i can take a message for her.. i hate talking to sales people espically since they wont take no for an answer.. so that is how i deal with that..

I do a lot of diverting calls to the voice mail because it isn't someone that I want to talk to. Plus, by diverting to the voice mail we don't have to listen to it ring for as long.

Hi dorannmwin, I don't have many calls daily. Therefore there isn't any problem for me to answer them. For sake of safety as well as to save trouble I answer phone according to the caller ID appearing on the screen. I won't answer to someone which I'm not familiar with. My loved ones as well as my friends usually will sms me the new phone number in case they have changed new phone number. Therefore it's impossible for me to miss any urgent call from them Happy posting

I definitely do agree with yuthat it is important to know the phone numbers of those individuals that you are close to. I will always answer those calls that come through on my phone from the individuals whom I've programmed into my phone. Then there are also the numbers that I just recognize and I will answer those as well.

Really, earlier I did answer without noticing the ID shown during the calls. I did encounter some embarrassed situation like assuming the calls from strangers were my friends. This is still okay. What's more if we receive calls without being aware that those are from bad eggs. Very often the culprits would purposely give trouble to us by saying indecent words that make us irritated Take care dorannmwin

I don't have a caller ID on my landline so I have to pick up the call. And, sometimes it's a junk call from the subscriber.

I get junk calls on my cell phone all the time. I made someone mad and she put my number on a bunch of calling lists. I was livid! Now they are saved as Dont Answer and their ring tone set to single beep. I don't hear it that way.

For me with my phone, once I realize that a caller is a junk caller I will set them to a deny status. A lot of times I don't even know that they are calling until the phone lights up after the call has been denied.

I think that is the one disadvantage that there is to not having a caller ID. We don't have a landline at all so I don't have to worry about junk calls on my landline.

The only phone i have isa cell phone. I also live ina basement apt. The combination is not a good one. Usually my phone dont ring it will go straight to voice message. When that happens i dont have a number to call them back. Unless they leave a message w/number. On the rare mements that it does ring...it only rings 2-3 times before going to voice message. I do not jump and run to answer. Because even if im near it goes to message before i can get it. Because of reception problems i usually use texting.

My husband has been having this problem with his cellular phone recently as well. His phone doesn't like to pick up at work and I don't like to leave voice messages so if his phone does go straight to voice mail, I will then call the phone at the shop so that I can talk to him. It is actually one of the times that I'm happy that there is another way to get ahold of him.

Nah, I don't always answer my phone. You know why because sometimes the customer care of certain companies call for the promotion of their products and most of them are very annoying. I always use to take sleep in the day time as I am working night shifts these days. So, I want to have good sleep hence I hardly take calls from 10 in the morning till 5 in the evening.!

Heck no. I have a good reason though. We moved into my mother in laws house and we are renting it now. But all of my husbands siblings have all lived here and used this number. So we get bill collection calls for like 5 different people, and a few for us too. Not to mention the telemarketers from singing up for free stuff and trials and stuff online. I don't answer it unless I know the number. We have an answering machine for all the rest.

I don't know about practical. I wish we had a self erasing answering machine. Sometimes we end up with like 30 or more messages. Half of them people we don't know or don't want to talk to.

That is the thing that drives me nuts about my voice mail. Where I don't answer numbers from bill collectors or telemarketers, they are constantly leaving messages on my voice mail and then I have to take the time to empty the voice mail so that I can have important messages from people that I care about in the event that I am unable to reach my phone.
• United States
15 Dec 09
Yep it is so the same here. My answering machine only holds so many and then it starts cutting the end of the messages off. And sometimes I do miss the important ones. What is worse is when half the calls are not from real people but recordings, saying call us back at this number. I wish there was some option on your phone to pick up and hang up on the recordings or them not be able to call you at all. I hate these things most of all. I feel it isn't that important if you are having a computer call me and not a real person.
