Currently, I live in Carlisle, Cumbria but lived most of my life in Blackpool, Lancashire. Both places are in the North West of England but are 100 miles apart. They couldn't be more different but I will show you the link to Blackpool as it has a famous Tower, built around the same time as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Guess which one I like best? Haha! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackpool_Tower I think the coolest aspect of this Tower is that it is designed to fall into the sea if damaged. Hopefully, there wouldn't be anyone on the beach at the time!

I live right underneath Pike's Peak in Colorado. When I lived in Michigan, I lived near the shoreline of Lake Michigan and in the vicinity of the world's largest weathervane. How's that for a landmark?

I have never been to Blackpool but I have been to stonehenge. It was quite cold during the time that I was there.

Yes, I have been to Stonehenge too but at a distance because the coach we were on had to drive past it. Still awesome though!

Sears Tower - Chicago Sears Tower
Chicago is huge and we are proud of many landmarks. The biggest one is Sears Tower. The view is amazing, especially at night. I love to be in Town during the holidays when we have festival of lights and the view from Sears tower is unforgettable.

Wow, that's awesome, thanks for sharing! Was Sears Tower the tallest building in the world for a while? I think the record is now set in Dubai if memory serves me right.

Shandi Finnessey grew up in my town. She was a Miss Missouri 2002,Miss Missouri USA 2004,Miss USA 2004. She won Miss USA 2004. There is a landmark stating this as her hometown, and that she was Miss USA 2004. I think some people here have pride in that fact.

I guess the most famous landmark now in my home town of Manchester is the Hilton hotel and apartments because it is so tall and also because of how it becomes wider half way up! However since I grew up going to Blackpool a fair bit I too see that as a symbol of the north west and absolutely love blackpool!! : )

I'm so glad you like Blackpool. I never thought I would miss it as much as I do since leaving nearly 5 years ago. However, my parents, brother and his son are still there so I visit whenever I can. I'm always amazed at how much is going on construction-wise...that never happened when I lived there!!

I think the one most people here are proud of is Nidaros Cathedral. It can be seen from most of town. They started building it in 1070 but it'll probably never be quite finished. The acoustics are great, I've heard some really good conserts there.

1070? Wow, that's amazing! I am sure it is a wonderful landmark and it's great that it still exists after all this time!

I have visited Blackpool and have seen the tower. I liked going to Blackpool to see the evening illuminations. I have been to Paris as well. I loved going up the Eiffel Tower and going on the River Seine in a boat. I live in the south west. Weston super Mare has a lovely looking pier but it was burned in a fire in 2008. It is being rebuilt and it has almost been completed. I will be able to visit it in July. I shall be on vacation in late June when it opens. Further up the coast I like the Victorian Clevedon Pier. It is wonderful to spend a sunny afternoon there. Well I hope that the Blackpool Tower won't ever fall down. I have seen photos of the Tower of Pisa. That leans to one side.

Blackpool Tower doesn't lean like the Tower of Pisa...well, maybe slightly but it's not as noticeable. I love piers and, as you know, Blackpool has three of them. It will be a great day when your "new" pier at Weston Super Mare is finally open. Well done to them for rebuilding it!

I used to live in Blackburn in Lancashire when I was a musician, and I often worked in Blackpool. The site of the Tower as I drove into work would tell me that I didn't have too far to drive. I came home to Cardiff in Wales back in 1976 and the landmark in Cardiff then was Cardiff Castle - now it the Millenium Stadium that towers above everything else. _Derek

Ironically, I've seen both Blackpool AND Carlisle play (not together) at the Millennium Stadium when Wembley was being built. It's an impressive building I must say. My husband says it's on the site of the old Cardiff Arms Park but is turned round to how it was originally, which is why it took about 4 years to build. I actually like Cardiff. My Aunty's ex-husband now lives there. You are lucky to live in such a lovely place. Carlisle were playing Swansea in the LDV Vans Final (which we lost) so you can imagine what the Police presence was like! Swansea fans weren't interested in the Carlisle fans but CARDIFF CITY fans!!

Hello Janey! I live in Chicago so we have a couple of landmarks which we are proud of namely the Sears Tower now named the Willis Tower but I'll call it Sears because that's the name of the landmark I grew up with. Ever since 911, a lot of Chicogoans believed the Sears Tower was going to be next. But what good will it do if it had no significance in the economy like trading? Well, even if it would fall, we had Lake Michigan nearby and Lake Shore Drive which would provide a walkway for the arduous antenna-ed building.

Thanks for that! I know a bit about Chicago because I used to be hooked on "ER" especially when George Clooney, Dr Carter and Dr Green were all in it at the same time! I have been to Chicago Airport before the ongoing flight to Las Vegas. Has the airport been modernised since late 2005/early 2006 (the first time I was in Vegas) as I'm afraid I saw a MOUSE run across the floor whilst waiting for our flight! It's true! So I'm hoping it's all been modernised now in case I have to use Chicago Airport again in future.

I'm going to take a total stab in the dark and guess that you like the Blackpool tower. Do I get a prize? OK wait, if it's designed to fall into the sea, why does it matter who's on the beach? Sorry, bad Dawn.... Landmarks here? Hmm.... Well, Sacramento, in addition to the state capital, has its own tower bridge and a pyramid building right behind it (used to be The Money Store headquarters), that are at least somewhat unique looking: http://www.planetware.com/picture/sacramento-us-ca493.htm And in my "real" hometown, Los Angeles, there's Griffith Observatory: http://www.griffithobs.org/exhibits/bbigpicture.html That's where we used to take people on a clear day. You could see the oceans and the mountains and downtown and everything in between...

Very nice too! That first one is the same shape as the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas but a different colour lol. Yes, you are quite right, I DO prefer Blackpool Tower...but I'm biased (obviously)

Downtown Woodstock Where the Movie Ground Hog Day - This is the podium shown in the Movie Ground Hog Day, which was shot in Woodstock, IL. This podium sits in the middle of the little down town area.
I live in a suburb so there is not much here that is prominent in the community. Our city has a time capsule and I never even knew that until last year, nobody ever talked or talks about it and when I ask other people if they knew we had one they don't. We do have a mansion here called the Dole Mansion which is owned by the park district. The mansion is full of history and said to be haunted. We also have two beaches and that is nice, but that is pretty much it. However, the next suburb over is Woodstock, IL where the movie Ground Hog Day was filmed.

While not landmarks in histroical sense, we do have a Television Tower around 230 Metres in height around our home. We also have a water park in our vicinity, where a lot of people come and enjoy. It is situated near Rithala Metro Station in Rohini, New Delhi.

I like the sound of the Waterpark, I bet that's awesome! Blackpool used to have an outdoor swimming pool, it was enormous, but, unfortunately, the weather wasn't warm enough so the place lost money year on year. It has been replaced by the hideous Sandcastle that is called something else now...but we still call it the Sandcastle. It's indoors but hasn't the same character as the open air baths I knew as a child. Also, an Olympic-Sized swimming pool called Derby Baths (indoors) was demolished a few years ago...listed building too..and nothing has been built on the site. That's one aspect of Blackpool that is annoying at times, bad planning and the locals don't get consulted!

Hai Janey! good morning..! I am from India. There is a beach near my place. It is very wonderful place for spending time in the evening and morning. The most best thing in our beach is, often there will be film shooting. In many films, our beach came. I feel happy when telling about it to my friends.

Hello there avimra from India. Lovely to "see" you and thanks for your response, it's much appreciated. Filming on the beach, eh? That sounds awesome. We went to an Indian Restaurant (well, Bangladeshi, actually) and they played some fabulous music in there. I didn't want to eat anything as I couldn't stop shaking my body to the music, it's very addicting! Sorry I was off-topic there but the Bollywood movies (from what I can gather) have awesome music in them, that's why I've just rambled on about it lol. Have you ever met Bollywood stars on the beach..or at least seen them? The women are really beautiful...and the men are quite nice as well lol.

I live in a small town. My home town near a mountain so we have cool and fresh air. we have a famous lake, called Sarangan lake. it is located at mountain slope. we can enjoy our time by driving boat around the lake, or riding a horse around the lake side. I'm sure people in my hometown are really proud with this natural gift..thanks..

Thank you so much for your lovely response. I have this picture in my mind now at how lovely Sarangan Lake must be. Natural "gifts" as you put it are a joy aren't they and you are lucky to have one nearby. I hope many generations to come will enjoy it as much as you do my friend.

Lighning Striking the Q1 Building - This building is the world's tallest residential tower and the tallest building in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. It is located 15 minutes from my home on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
Wow, that is an awesome old tower. I bet there is a lot of history in that building! We do not have much history n this city as it was only settled a hundred years ago and everything seems to get torn down and replaced here quite regularly. The closest thing that we have to an iconic man made landmark is only a few years old. The Q1 building is the world's tallest residential tower and the tallest building in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. It is the second tallest free standing structure in the southern hemisphere, behind Auckland's Sky Tower. It is located 15 minutes from my home on the Gold Coast in Queensland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q1_%28building%29 It is quite impressive when photographed at night and quite often gets struck by lightning as seen in the attached photo.
