Does anybody still have any vinyl records?

I remember well the days that I eagerly rushed out to buy the latest records to add to my collection of 100s of singles, and the time that I spent keeping them clean. Then the Compact Disc was introduced. At first the people with a CD player were few and far between, but gradually they became the standard medium for music storage. The CD reigned supreme for many tears and then started to share their popularity with MP3 players. Turntables, which used to be an integral part of a music player, gradually faded into the background. However, despite no longer being the central part of the system, turntables are still available as separates and thus must be in some demand. Who still uses a turntable, and what kind of records do you have?

I, personally have one vinyl record. I got it free when I was on a school trip. It was good because everyone else got paper hats and they ran out by the end so I got a record instead! It was "Move" by "Major Matt Mason" which I had never heard of before or since! My partner has a huge collection of vinyl. He's got everything from the Beatles to Rolf Harris and Led Zeppellin to Peter Sellers!

@rebelann I've never been able to find the song either. There was another song, I think it was called 'Emergency'. I vaguely remember the song but not sure if that was by Major Matt Mason as well or by someone else. I wouldn't know where to start looking for that song!

It might have simply been a commercial jingle @pumpkinjam

Looked that up on YouTube but there wasn't a song just commercials about the toy.

I have a stack of old vinyl albums from my younger days, and I still have a turntable to play them on. My son is 24 and a total class rock buff. He is looking to buy a turntable so that he can buy original vinyl records and hear the songs as they were originally recorded without all the remastering and remixing that they do before putting them on CD.

Some of those old vinyl records have a funny hissing sound to them, I prefer the remastered versions

I do, my sister is looking after them for me, I should really get them off her, I went to a radio station when I was about 10 and got 2 records, I;d never heard of the bands, but I keep the records to remember going to the radio station.

It's amazing what memories something apparently unrelated can bring back.

I still have all my vinyl LP's. Over 100, I'm sure, and including everything you could think of from heavy metal to blues, to country, to jazz, to Hawaiian. What I've started to do is hunt down old picture discs. Remember those? Now those are getting very hard to find. I haven't owned a turntable in a while but still plan on getting one eventually. You're right about the hi-fi stereos deserving a room, as some of those older units are very nice pieces of furniture. Aloha!

It should be quite nostalgic for you when you finally get a new turntable.

I gave all of my vinyl to my daughter. I miss my vinyl. BUt, I don't have a turntable, nor do I have space for one.

Space has always been an issue, especially when stereograms were the standard, but they deserved the room they took up because some of the older stereograms were wonderful pieces of furniture. Now I have a stackable music system.

record - record
yes I have just been going through my records to see what is still in good order, then I am going to try and sell them on Ebay, there seems to be a renewed interest in them.

The interest becomes stronger as they become more scarce. A lot of the older stuff has been deleted now, so the value would increase accordingly.

Try listening to a few, some of the old records are good quality music.

And it's interesting how you can hear the progression of quality and technology of real stereo sound from older to newer records! The beatles had no idea what to do with it in the early days, so we hear "la,la,la,la" in one ear and the drum track in the other.

Yeah, about 20 of em. I like to listen to them sometimes. They don't have the best sound quality, but it takes me back to the day.

It may not be the best sound quality, but it is the sound that we associate with the time when these records were new.

Yes, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a record player, so soon it is likely to be impossible.

I have vinyl records. I also have an antique stero consel that plays all my vinyl. I play it mostly around the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas.

When I was younger I had several cases of them. I had both the large lps and a ton of the single 45s. I listened to them a lot. Then when they started to become extinct and the cds became more popular, I decided to get rid of the lps and 45s. I sold them at a flea market. Hopefully, someone is enjoying them. I did replace some of my favorite lps with the cd version or tape version over the years.

I did pretty much the same thing. It is sad to think that many of the records that I played so much 40 years ago are now virtually unavailable.

i live in a house full of dj's, so collectively i think we have over 2500+ vinyl records. we also have 4 sets of turntables, 2 sets of CDJ's, and 3 mixers. as for the type of records, it's mostly electronic dance music (techno, trance, dnb, funky breaks, breakbeat, disco, etc)

Yep...I have some singles and some LPs, but alas my gear was in storage for two years in a shed that flooded and hadextreme heat and quite cool conditions. Most things survived remarkably well but sadly not my turntable. I think the band that turns it must have perished. I'm not sure what to do...sell my vinyl on Ebay...I have the White Album among others and use the money to replace my favourites with cds or buy a new turntable...so many decisions, so little time. lol

I have thousands of them but then I sell them online and at record fairs around the UK. I also personally collect them too - mainly '60's and '70's - Stones/Who/Led Zeppelin, that kind of stuff. I don't buy new vinyl recordings so I have a lot of CD's as well but I just think vinyl sounds so much better, even with the scratches, etc! Storage space is a problem though - CD's definitely have the edge there.

I would not actually say that vinyl sounds better, but it does offer the original sound. This is what we remember whenever we think of such groups as The Rolling Stones, so I can wellunderstand what you mean.

I have some!! But only because you can't get those songs on CD. Rare stuff. LOVE IT! --- --- --- "I certainly think Britney Spears is the devil. I still have about 50 albums...I can't part with them. It's one of the first things I bought when I started working. I came from a family with 6 children. If you wanted to hear music, you turned on the radio. Needless to say as soon as I started working, I bough myself a turntable and a couple of albums.

A turntable was the first thing that I bought as well, then later on I bought another speaker to make the system into stereo.
