Off the Grid newsletter is great. The subject is getting as far off the grid as possible and I just received my first one. I wasn't interested in their article on using cloth diapers but I learned a LOT about drying food. I can see that this newsletter is going to be very useful to me! If you'd like to check it out, it's free and at offthegridnews.com

Drying food? As in fruits and veggies and maybe even some beef jerky? I'm planning on doing quite a lot of that when harvest time rolls around. This newsletter sounds like it's just the ticket! Thanks so much for sharing it! I'm going to have a peek as soon as I post this comment. Oh, the cloth diapers thing is interesting to me, too, because I "invented" a diaper when my oldest son was a baby. I even went to the Patent Office to research it and no one has come close to my design. I'll probably be making them before too long but I am waiting on a patent number and a trademark on them before that time. Maybe now is a good time to get started on them, huh? Again, thank you for sharing this newsletter!

You should start making that invention! You could hire people to make them, too. We certainly need good diapers. When mine were little I sewed velcro on them so I wouldn't have to use pins and they worked great except they stuck together in the laundry sometimes if they came loose.

I had that same idea, dragon. I got so tired of prikking my fingers with those pins! My diapers have Velcro tabs that are slanted so they can be closed small for smaller babies but allow the diaper to fit larger babies, too. They are contoured and have extra padding where it's needed most. I sold some to my neighbors who saw them hanging on the line to dry and asked me where I bought them. Once I told them that I made them, they were very eager for me to sell them some. I guess I should have done this a long time ago but better late than never, right? I already have one myLotter friend waiting to help me make these. If they really sell well, I know I'd want to hire more friends from myLot. Plus, I have a couple of other irons on the fire right now so I wouldn't have time to devote to making diapers all day.

Yep, the government isn't going to run to the rescue if there is a disaster or you lose your shirt financially. Best to be prepared for anything!

I'm all about independence and I can see where this will really help me. I'm going to buy a food dehydrator and dry most of the stuff in my garden, this newsletter gave me a lot of info on this today. Do you get the Dollar Stretcher? That's also a good one that's free.

I lived in Phoenix for 28 years and found it a pain in the butt to raise vegetables. But it CAN be done! Use shade, water and good soil to raise anything you need. I realize that water is costly there but gas prices are going up and you might just break even with veggies. But you'll have naturally grown food. Put a 1/2 gallon jug in your toilet tank to help. After you've gotten wet, turn off the shower, soap up then turn it on again. When I was in AZ, we didn't even use the hot water in the summer because we got our water from a well and it was warm in the summer. We turned off the water heater in the summer. Shade, water and attention can give you a wonderful garden. Container gardening is great, too.

I think I have heard of this before. It may come down to us all having to live a little more off the grid. Life was harder when we did, but simpler as well.

Indeed, it was much harder! I would like to live in past times but please, don't take my washing machine or my stove!

Thanks for sharing this! This kind of information is hard to find for free. Those of use who will need it the most often don't have a few extra HUNDRED $$$s to spend to get the needed information. Therefor anything like this that is available for free is good to share with others who might be able to use it. ~Rachel

This is a great resource. Thank you. It will save money, resources and help us know how to deal with stuff if the power is ever out for an extended period of time. I cant see a down side to this at all. I would love to live off the grid someday but I am so pamperd by the little things that make life easy.

I'm glad you found my discussion! I really like this new ezine. I was taught a lot of survival stuff when I was growing up in the form of camping, food preservation, economizing, etc. so I don't have a lot of pampering to give up. But I would really mourn the loss of a washer and dryer! I'd love to live off the grid but solar panels are so expensive and usually break or wear out before they pay for themselves--everything "green" is expensive for a reason, cos there are a chosen few getting rich off the movement. Anyway, this is a great resource, as you said, and I'm glad we've found it!

I found great stuff about drying food in the first one. The second had an interesting article about preparing for emergencies. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

That sounds really good. There are some good message boards and e-mail lists out there too. I think the cloth diaper article is compulsory 'cause they all seem to have one!

A lot of people have small children, I think that is why they have the diaper articles. That is good news, though, because it means that parents of these children are reading such newsletters and not depending on the government to get their a$$es out of a sling.
