Illegal immigrants ONLY have jobs that Americans don't want

I think it is time to lay this myth to rest. Colin Powell stated that without illegal immigrants his remodeling and other work on his home would not have been done - sorry, Colin. Here in Arizona we have a lot of legal US citizens in the contruction business who are out of work or only able to get part-time work right now and they would have been happy to go to your house and done the work those illegal immigrants were doing. Meg Whitman's maid who is an illegal immigrant was earning $23 an hour. When the people where I work heard that, we were all (men and women both) saying we would gladly be a maid and clean someone's house for $23 an hour (since the majority of us are working for $10 an hour or less). These may not be glamourous jobs; but, a lot of American citizens would be willing to do them if given the opportunity. The same is true of a lot of other jobs illegal immigrants are working at too. The have been numerous raids and layoffs of illegal workers; and, guess what, they were working side by side with legal US citizens at the time - so, Americans are willing to work these jobs. There are a lot of Americans out there who are working for a lot less money and who would consider these jobs a huge step up and a lot of other Americans who would love to have any job at all right now. So, the claim that illegal immigratns are only taking the jobs no one else will work is clearly a myth - not a fact!

It was not only Powell who made that statement: George W. Bush also said the same thing! Come to Texas and you will be surprised at all that is going on! Hispanics (legals and illegals) are the preffered choice of workers in Texas! Speakeasy, I am sorry to inform you that it is only a matter of time before we all start heading North for refuge! I believe that all the Southern States have been reclaimed!

Been there, done that! Actually, the reason they are the preferred choice of workers is the fact that the majority of them are bilingual. One person can communicate with more people than a person who only speaks English. The Southern States have only been reclaimed if we let them get away with it. AZ is not going down without a fight! Texas used to be that way; or, have they gotten soft since I left there.

I have always thought that it was a MYTH that illegals are only doing jobs we wouldn't. That is the dumbest thing to have ever come out of anybody's mouth. If someone is unemployed but an illegal IS, don't you think the poor citizen collecting unemployment or living on barely anything because they ran out of unemployment would do one of those jobs? HELL YES, of course they would. I don't think ANY illegals ought to be here, they should ALL be deported, and whatever we are spending should be used to find and flush out illegals and send them on their way. The only ones who should be left alone are people who have clearly started the process of gaining citizenship, and they should have a time limit in which to accomplish it, say 6 months to a year. If they have not finished gaining their citizenship and been given naturalized status within that timeframe, they should be deported. It would cost us a lot less than it costs us to pay for welfare, food stamps, all the medical bills these people skip out on, all the money it takes to educate their kids in public schools and pay for their kids' lunches, etc etc etc. I also believe that anybody who is NOT legal should NEVER be allowed to get a driver's license from ANY state, OR any state issued ID. Without a license or state issued ID, none of these people should EVER be allowed to get a job to begin with. This also means they shouldn't be able to rent a place to live, purchase land or a vehicle, or enter into any legal binding agreement of any kind with any business. SOOOO... if you could not prove who you were and therefore could not get a place to live, a vehicle, or a job, wouldn't that mean you could not live here? That would solve the whole problem, wouldn't it?

I do agree with you. Currently only 3 states issue driver's lecenses to illegal immigrants and that may soon change. One of the candidates for governor of New Mexico wants to change their policy of issuing drivers license to illegal immigrants and giving them other assistance and many of the citizens of New Mexico seem to agree. People in Utah are also starting to question their states policy regarding illegal immigrants.

So you know a lot of American that are lining up to pick crop during the summer? Until you show me that line it is still a fact.

Actually, my first paid job was picking blackberries and raspberries in the summer along side, my mother and grandparents. You worked for just a few weeks in the summer and made good pay for the work. I made more money picking berries in the summer than I could make all year babysitting. My grandparents and mother also picked grapes in the fall while I was in school. My mother did it to get some extra money and my grandparents did it to supplement their social security (this was back when if you earned more than a small amount each year they reduced your social security benefits). So, by working just 2 months a year, they earned enough to make life more comfortable. Of course, the field owners checked our paper work before hiring us. They also picked up eveyone who needed a ride to the fields and took them back at the end of the day. The problem today is that most people do not realize just how much money you can make in a single day picking crops and many of the people who would be willing to do the work do not have transportation. From the accounts I have been reading, most harvest work pays $100 or more PER DAY. That is more than a lot of people are making working a regular job in a single day. If they are looking for people to do the work, they need to target unemployed people, nonworking spouses (housewives and househusbands), retirees, and teens; and they need to provide transportation.

A majority of farms are family owned. It is a myth that the majority of illegal aliens work in the farm industry. The bulk of employment for illegal aliens is actually in the construction and housekeeping industries.

Gewcew, I live in a particularly hard hit area of south central Florida and I can't show you a line but I can certainly tell you that the folks down here who have used up their unemployment benefits and are *still* unemployed are willing to do those jobs. A friend of my daughter's went to work for a local dairy and she was fired after a week because she wouldn't let her supervisor pat her on her butt whenever he wanted to. He threatened her first and when he told her she was fired he added that he can do what he wants to the "chicas" without getting any lip. The "chicas" are the illegals who have to let him take advantage of them like that.

I think we are just repeating what we always have heard. The game is changing, all the time. I know people who will take just about any job, in order to have anything. I cannot believe the $23 per hour maid payment. That is more than manufacturing jobs pay around here. I would be happy with $10.

That is why when we heard she was being paid that much per hour, all of us said we would gladly go clean rich people's houses for that type of pay. My hourly pay is a little less than $10 per hour and my husband makes a little over $12 per hour. Together the 2 of us almost make what this woman was earning and both of us are legal!

we are talking about her but doesn't mean we are envious, right? because it's very clear and unfair " why the government doesn't consider the citizen". if maybe they will hire citizen for this kind of hourly rates I guess nobody will refused it besides it's not a hard job to clean rich house. agree?

Another myth attached to this one is that if employers are forced to hire legal workers prices will increase. The problem with this theory is that prices for goods and services did not fall as more illegal workers flooded the various markets...nor did they increase at a slower pace than those of businesses that hired legal workers. The employer profits, American workers suffer from job loss, states and the federal government lose income revenue, illegal workers are taken advantage of. As undocumented workers continue to find work as day laborers in the construction/home improvement fields, consumers have no way of knowing whether the people working in their homes are qualified and employers have no way of knowing who they are. How can anyone seriously believe that this is a good thing?

Exactly right on the money! What really gets me is that our elected officials are the ones that are able to break the law and bend the rules without any repercussions. Then there are the failed taxes they never seem to pay. Timothy Geithner is one person who really gets me steamed. He's supposed to be handling such activities and yet did not pay his taxes. What to do? Jail these creeps and ban them from employment in our government is what! We need to create a special government entity that polices our politicians and be able to slap them with fines or even jail time. That is supposedly the FBI's job, but they never seem to act.

But the FBI is made of them! Crooks running and regulating at the same time! Now, this sounds like fun!

We have to hold politicians accountable for their actions - exposing them has made them pull out of races, retire from office, and get kicked out by opponents with better records. Key thing about the FBI is the letter "F" which stands for "federal" - the FBI does not work for the people of the United States; they work for the Federal government. As long as your police agency is employed by the government, they are not going to attack their bosses. A saying that has been proven true time after time is "Democrats in Washington don't mind increasing taxes because they aren't paying taxes in the first place"! There are a few Republican politicians that have also failed to pay their taxes; but, they are vastly outnumbered by the Democrats.

I think that this is bull because I know a lot of women who are White and African American who take janitor jobs and maid service jobs. I think that this is complete myth because there are many women who can't get jobs who would love to have jobs like this.

These illegal immigrants are using fake IDs to get the same jobs that US citizens are also applying for. Working as a maid is definately not my dream job; but, if I was offered a job withthat type of pay, I would be very happy being a maid.

The real truth is that most of the Illegals here are not working at all. They pack a house or trailer full of relatives and one or two work and the rest find a way to get on the dole. It is amazing how quickly they learn to work the system. They make more on Social Security than we do when we retire and they have never paid a dime into it. I wish that I was illegal. I had my own painting, carpentry and stucco business for a number of years. I was forever being approached by illegals for work. I always said no. Besides they wanted more money than the market was paying. I told them to go to Orlando and see if they could get it there. This is Fl. You cannot get Yankee wages here. I had and all female crew, but I never went for a minority status when I bid on jobs although I could have. We always had enough work without it. The brick and block layers were the ones that had the problems. The illegals took that over and put the locals out of work. I sometimes hired some of the locals to help with mixing mud for stucco. They were always looking for work because of illegals. The one type of work in the south that used to always be left to illegals was migrant work. Picking oranges and various fruit that machines could not do. They have since built machines that can pick almost everything. I guess folks have had to branch out and enter other lines of work to worm their way into the US.

When I was young my first paid job was picking blackberries and raspberries beside my mother and grandparents during summer vacation. The local field owners checked to make sure we were legally old enough to work (had state issued work permits) and they hired anyone who showed up in the morning to be driven to the fields. Harvesting crops in our area was dominated by housewives, retirees, and teens who wanted extra cash; and it paid well for a few weeks work. The only exception was in the fall when there were only housewives and retirees to harvest the grapes and potatoes and then they brought in migrant "gangs" who traveled the US picking crops to supplement the local workers. These migrants were not illegals; they were blacks and Puerto Ricans and they were all legal. I do not feel sorry for the "farmers" who cannot find workers to harvest their crops. They have gotten away from relying on locals and helping the local economy and just hired "migrant gangs" without worrying about whether they were legal or not.

A more accurate statement would be, illegals are doing the jobs businesses won't pay Americans to do.

I would agree with your statement EXCEPT many of the employers are paying both illegal immigrants and American citizens at the same time - many are working side by side.

It is very rare for illegal immigrants to be making over minimum wage - although, some immigrants who are working are not actually illegal, they just don't have a work permit. I don't know, it's easy to get mad and discriminate against the outsiders who are stealing jobs away from hard-working Americans, especially when we need a scapegoat because of our terrible economy, but the truth is that illegal immigrants are not a major problem in our economy and if you knew any illegal immigrants and got to know their stories, you probably wouldn't be so quick to judge.

yeah I do agree with you. It really cost a fortune to come here legally. I know a friend who spend almost 3 thousand dollars to process the necessary papers.

This is interesting. If the jobs that the illegal immigrants taking are wanted so badly from the legal citizens and that they are paid more or less at the same level, why on Earth would the boss choose those illegal ones as it is by itself also illegal? Isn't it obvious that taking an illegal immigrant to fulfill a position is cheaper than a legal citizen? Above all, it is the money that the boss concern most and thus only if they are paid less that the boss will choose them. So, the question is, are the others willing to accept a even lower wages to do these not so desirable jobs.

How in the world this illegal immigrants got the high paid job with government official itself..? why they consider illegal instead of the citizens? A questions until now I can't even explain it to myself..maybe you can..

The same way illegal immigrants get a lot of other jobs - fake ID's. No one can be an expert in whether the paperwork they show you is fake or real; but, after a while the social security office will advise you that the social security number you are paying into is not a valid number or that more than one person is using that number. They advised Meg Whitman's husband of this fact in 2003. Why the maid was not fired until 2009; well, that is something that Meg Whitman and her husband would have to explain.

well, social security must have a clue about the sss number they are paying, right? but I guess they are kind enough to give them an advice to these illegal immigrants.! maybe they will advice to them: you wait for your next appointment or a letter in a mail for your new SSS number..! okey? and they said: hoorraaaaaaayy! Maybe the maid is from africa, and she is begging not to fired her for the sake of her family back home. but to think of, is it not a shame to the government for making a law and they are the one doing it..? it is extremely unfair to those who spend thousands of money just to become a citizen, and to the american citizens who paid federal & state taxes. MaYbe next time news will be: ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FREE OF HEALTH COVERAGE: message from governor " speakeasy "..lol.! joke only..!

I do not mind helping in disasters and things like that if I can afford to do so at the time. I agree that ILLEGAL immigrants should not be here in the first place; people who come here LEGALLY have demonstrated that they are able to take care of themselves and they have jobs already waiting that they are uniquely qualified for. What REALLY bothers me about the ILLEGAL immigrants is that they have this sense of ENTITLEMENT - like we OWE them jobs, food, shelter, etc.
