Noises from next door

Hi friends, It's been some time since I last posted a discussion, I can't believe I have been so busy.... Last night I couldn't sleep and was lying listening to some sounds coming from outside. At first I thought it was a car engine trying to start up but the sounds were very short in between and I realized it was actually somebody snoring! During the day sometimes I could hear phones ringing, the doorbell, people singing while taking a shower, kids playing, people shouting and now snoring. What thin walls my house has! Luckily the sound disappeared after a while, probably the person decided to turn over and disturbed his wife instead, LOL! Well, do you have thin walls too and what are the sounds that you would hear at night that makes you unable to sleep?

I don't think I have thin walls, but sometimes at night I can hear the people that live behind me dogs howling and barking at night. Once one dog start, they all start.

Oh ya, the cats and dogs at night, sometimes they fight and sometimes they mate, both are as noisy. We have the belief that animals are able to see ghosts and once they start howling at night, I would think that they have met with some night "strangers".

Cows. Did you know that cows moo at night? Well, I sure didn't until a few month ago when the man who owns some of the land across the street from me moved some of his cattle to that field. Apparently, there are about six females and one bull having a good ole time over there. Fine, my big dog likes to bark at them..my grandchildren who live behind me like to look at them. But, as the weather down here in Florida has changed so that we can open our windows in the evening, the normally quiet night has been replaced with "Moooooo!".

I don't think so because the owner comes by daily to feed them. Maybe they're calling the male and he's off sleeping as most males are! LOL! I don't know much about cows either. I live in a subdivision outside of town and originally there were supposed to be houses built on the land across the street.

"males are always sleeping".... LOL! I will remember that! Maybe six cows are too much for one bull to handle and he needs the beauty sleep to keep himself energetic and attractive to the females!

Cows....I certainly didn't know that, I have always been a city person and there are no cows here except in the zoo. I agree, they would be quite nice to watch in the daytime but why do they moo at night? Are they asking for supper?

Hi bluemoon, I am very lucky in that my apartment walls seem to be very sound proof. I very rarely hear much at all from next door and certainly nothing that would keep me awake at night. Once in a great while, she cranks her music and I can hear it somewhat in my place but it is not so loud that it bothers me and not at really late hours. Someone here mentioned traffic and I have to go along with that where I live. I'm more apt to hear the traffic outside than I am my neighbors.

Hi sid, Living in a city, I guess we can't avoid hearing all the traffic noises. There could be some really loud sounds coming from motorbikes and sports cars racing in the middle of the night, and even loud chatting and laughing sometimes as I lie in bed wondering what are these people doing so late out.

You are the lucky one, I awake easily at the slightest sound and I tend to hear more than others do.

Well in my case, our walls were not thin,But my problem with my neighbor is they were always smoking then the smoke always reach our house. The thing is, the reason why we move to this house is that,it is located in the mountain and it means,we want to smell fresh air every time we go home but it seems that the air is not fresh anymore because of what they are doing.

Hi, I do get wisp of smoke coming into my window at times too. I try to escape to another part of my house if I can but if it happened at night and I'm too lazy to get up, I will simply have to tolerate it. How nice to live in the mountains, you probably get more fresh air than the rest of us. I hope the smoke only comes occasionally for you.

Hi saph, Thanks for thinking about me. Luckily my toilets are enclosed and not facing the neighbouring house, I doubt they can hear what I'm doing inside.

hi bluemoonpavilion oh my G yes the sounds from the little vietnamese'stores behind my room. the refrigeration units buzz all night so invested in some good sturdy ear plugs. then at dawn the garbage truks co me in and keep honking as they are backing up waking me up and then as its almost six I have to get up.see I am in Southern Calfornia, Garden Grove but am also in the middle of what is called little Saigon as these were the boat refugees who came here from after the war . a 25 square blocks consists of mostly Vietnamese stores. I sort of like them as neighbors as they are very thoughtful and kind, and rarely do we see a police car in this area, and usually thats because of a Caucasian couple who fight all the time. Also they impress me as they do not shunt their elders into nursing homes, they keep them in their own homes and respect them.Sometimes I sit outside in front of this center and soak up some sun. the older vietnamese always say hellp as they pass by. the younger ones do not but that not unusual.so I too have noiese and without my earplugs I cou ld not sleep at all, too many noises. then there is the town bark late at night when One dog barks and a zillion others answer.

Hi Hatley, It must be interesting to live among another group of people like you do, to observe their way of living which would be so different. Seems that you have learnt a lot from them. Being an Asian myself I can imagine the kind of lifestyle they lead. I have been to Vietnam and find it to be a very nice place and the people very helpful. Take care and do not be too alarmed by the dog barks. I'm glad you have your earplugs for protection, I'm considering buying a pair too!

Good day to you Bluemoonpavilion, The room where I lived now does not have a thick wall. It is just a man-made partitioned room that is made by wood. It was only 2 days back when I feel very disturbed with the noise that I heard. Wherein, it was already 1 am and yet they are still talking and laughing in their loud voices. And not even minding that they are disturbing other people who are already asleep. For this reason, I have a terrible headache when I woke up the next day. Since, the my sleeping cycle was turned abnormal during that time.

Oh what a bad time you had, those people are so inconsiderate. Is there anything you can do about it? If they go on like this on a regular basis, and you can't resolve the problem on their side, maybe you should get ear plugs, just make sure you can hear your alarm ringing the next morning!

hi blue! i have an experience about the nest door people snoring.i can't believe it at first that it was actually someone snoring!because i live in an apartment noises and sound can be hear anywhere even in my house.others make some noise, we also make some noise,we are just fine with it. i do not know whether the wall is thin or thick but usually we can hear people voices, things dropping, steps etc.

Hi Hanum, Sounds like your situation is quite similar to mine. I don't know whether I have disturbed others but I think it is unlikely unless it's our talking and sometimes a bit of singing and humming songs that they dislike. I guess it works both ways huh? They gave us some noise and we gave them some back.

Hi, bluemoonpavilion! Fortunately I live in an apartment on the 14th floor, it is very high so I'm not disturbed much by noises. But still I can hear some honk because my apartment is beside a busy road. It's very difficult to find a quiet place in urban zones here in China because we have too many people.

Hi qianyun, It must be nice to live so high up, I live on the 8th floor and can often hear cars and motorcycles from the road because my bedroom faces the common carpark. There is a shop downstairs and the supplies van usually come in the middle of the night to unload stuff, and it can be very noisy. China is so big, if you live in a quiet place, probably you have to spend a lot of time on travelling right? It is a trade-off.

Every freaking night and it is so irritating, as it is the upstairs new neighbors who for some odd reason decide that their day starts when we go to bed. As who in the heck has their two year old pounding and running around at 2am every night. I do not get it as all day it is very quiet although they are up there and then night falls they hammer, put loud music and or TV and think it is okay. We have complained to them and the landlord but they do not get how irritating it is each time we have to hear it. We no longer want to live here and or underneath anyone anymore, so as soon as spring comes we will be moving as it it truly irritating especially when the landlord does nothing about it.

Oh, so you have night owls for neighbours! That sounds quite horrible and they are not sensible to let their kid stay up so late, they must not be leading a healthy life. It's too bad your landlord is not doing anything about it, maybe he doesn't want to create trouble for himself. Anyway, glad you are getting out of there, hope you get nice quiet neighbours this time round.

I just so remember when I lost my normal sleeping pattern because I work night shift before. I covered our bedroom's windows with cardboards because I became sensitive to light and worse my mom just can't lower down her voice. It was so horrible. I can hear and sense every single step they make. =(

Hi mhypie, I hope you have resumed your normal working hours, heard that it isn't good to work night shifts because it affects our biological clock. The times when I could not sleep at night and have to make it up during the day, I was very annoyed with the people voices too, my family just talked too much and shouted quite a lot. I know the feeling you have.

Haha, how funny about the snoring! However, it's unfortunate about the thin walls. lol. Where I live, the houses aren't close enough to hear through the walls, and I don't live in apartment, but I still hear noises from neighbors quite often. It can be a bit annoying when I'm in bed and the neighbors, for whatever reason, decide it's time for a nightly swim. You can hear them laughing obnoxiously loud, splashing and making all sorts of noise. That's the most bothersome thing for me, because I wouldn't mind it in the day, but at 12 am or 1 am, it's a little crazy!

Probably we hardly notice these normal sounds during the daytime but at night, sound travels far and we can hear everything extra loudly and clearly. Noise of any kind could be disturbing and at 12 or 1am, it is simply inconsiderate!

Well the noises that I hear are mostly traffic sounds from outside and occasionally, 'marbles dropping' sound above the ceiling. I don't hear any quarreling noises. Sometimes when I open the door, I do hear the arrogant neighbor shouting at her children and it's dam noisy. Nowadays, we prefer to close the door. More peace this way.

19 Nov 10
Hi Judge, I hear the "marbles" all the time, I have always wondered what those are since my neighbours upstairs are probably too old for the game, it could be other round objects dropping. I find it strange to hear it only at night but probably it's too noisy in the daytime to hear such things. It is good that you can shut the noise out by closing your door. My bedroom is just next to the bathroom of my neighbour and I could hear a lot of singing, grunting and whatnots, uggggh.....

The neighbor's dog has a bad habit of informing everyone within barking distance of how angry he is at the world. He's kinda like rush Limbah, only without the commercial breaks. And with better body odor, and hygiene I swear, he won't be quite after 11 pm. It's getting to be unbearable. I've begun carrying on a conversation with him. in tune to his bark patterns. I'd be like: So, you come here often? dog: woof woof woof Yeah, I know what you're saying. It's strange how things work out that way. Want some gum dog: woof woof Yeah I know, it's a nasty habit. dog: woof woof...woof woof woof What? You say you want to give me all of your life savings because I'm such a good person?!?! dog: grrrrr Chill pooch, I'm juss messin wit chu!

My walls are by no means thin since they are made of concrete. However, I still hear the people next door either slamming doors or starting up their car in the early early morning. They also love to talk loud so you hear their conversations as if they were in your house. I really thought with a concrete house you wouldn't hear so much but you do. Animals also keep me away with the cats in heat, crickets and roosters and lets not forget the barking dogs on my block.

I live in a townhouse complex and I believe that the walls that separate neighbors is also too thin. I have a couple of kids who could be rowdy sometimes. And a few times, neighbors have already complained. Thankfully, the first one who complained has already moved away. And this new neighbor who's complained a couple of times is very understanding. She just wants to let us know that it sometimes disturbs her dog.

I wish walls are made of hollow blocks instead of woods to eliminate all those noise. I am irritated to the swearing of our African- American neighbors. They are always shouting and the music is so loud too! Then on the left side of our house we have Mexicans they will turn on their loud music while they are swimming. Sometimes I get startled when I heard a loud sound after they dived on their swimming pool. ANd this is the most annoying, every past midnight one of the Mexican will knock on their door. I think he works late. He will knock so loud and if nobody will open the door. He will yell, "Hurry Up! Open the door"

If the van is a rockin'...don't come a knockin'...those are the noises that would disturb me. In a similar incident, I had to stay in a hotel for a recent business trip, and found that someone within three rooms of me was snoring so loud it woke me up in the middle of the night. It always makes me wonder the neighbors can hear....then I get disturbed and dont think about it any longer.
