i am planning to go at driving school, and most of my friends who experts in driving a car told me that the best to learn first is the manual gear shift than the automatic gear shift. actually i dont have any idea about that manual and automatic gear shift, but still i will follow what they say, because i really want to learn how to drive a car.

Learn stick shift! Manual transmission is so fun and when you go to buy a car it will be about $1,000 cheaper than an automatic car. Also, it will be about 1mpg higher than an automatic car as well. It's great!

I didn't continue learning to drive, I just am too afraid to learn it :D My sister was my instructor and trainer for my driving lesson and she told me that it would be much good to learn to drive with a manual gear than automatic. It is because you will be used to using the automatic gear already when being taught the manual gear so it will take time for you to learn.

I say that it is a good thing to learn BOTH. Learning to drive a vehicle with a manual gear shift is a skill that can prove valuable for you in life. I know it has for me over the years. The first vehicle I learned to drive was one with a manual shift.

Most of my friends who drive definitely say its better to learn how to drive first on the manual gear shift. Once you know how to drive manual, it would be very easy to drive automatic. If you first learn how to drive automatic and there is an emergency that needs you to drive a manual gear shift car then you will really have a hard time. Good luck on your driving lesson!

Definitely, the manual transmissioned cars would be the best for a student to learn first. Why? Because it is actually the basic fundamentals in driving. It is so much similar to learning the principles of mathematics before using the calculator.

I heard it is good ot know how to drive the manual too since you get a license for both manual and automatic. As a first time driver, manual can be hard to drive, but with persistence it can pay off. Good luck

If you learn to drive a manual, you can drive anything. Automatic is easier.

I believe that it is best to learn on a car with manual transmission. It gives you a better understanding of the car. Also, should you ever have to drive someone else's car that had a manual transmission, you would not be at a loss as what to do. One never knows when that kind of emergency might arise.

I started off on driving automatic, and it was good, because there are so many pieces that you have to watch out for when you're first learning to drive. You have to know exactly where to look, how to use your hands, how to work your feet just perfectly, working both your feet and hands together... it's like playing an instrument... when you first start, you're going to sound terrible, and you have to pull off a little symphony to get your license... This is why automatic is a better one to start with, it takes a big chunk out of what you have to learn when you first start out. It's still difficult to learn to drive, but at least you don't have to try and work in the manual transmission all the time, too. That you can learn after you have your license. But after you get your license, or just after you learn to drive automatic, you gotta try out manual. I really did like it when I got a manual car, it really does make you feel more in control of the car, and just plain cool. But, you should be advanced already to do that... so warm up, first.

It would probably be smartest to learn manual FIRST, because after you learn how to use a stick shift, automatic trannys will be a BREEZE. I tried to learn manual when I was 12..Didn't go down so hot. So, because I haven't learned, there's no way I could ever buy a car with a manual transmission. But it's good to know, I guess you never know when you'll be in a situation where it's useful to know how. I hear if you buy a car with a manual transmission - you get a lot better gas mileage, so there's an advantage.

It depends if you want to know how to drive a manual vehicle later on. If you do it probably is best to drive a manual first since it is harder to drive then an automatic but I'm not sure since I don't know how to drive a manual shift only an automatic.

well , since you are going to a driving school , i suggest you learn the manual gear shift first. it will help you a lot. and im sure after you can drive manual , you do not need to learn automatic gear. as my self , i can only drive automatic and the downside is , some coutries i go , they only use manual gear. unfortunately i cant even drive it.

I think their right in saying that you should first learn to drive a manual before an automatic. Driving an automatic is relatively easier and less difficult than driving a manual transmission car, but then again some cars are in manual transmission so it's also advised to learn manual in case you have to drive a manually driven car.

I dont know how to drive but sitting with my bf as he drives and as we chat the traffic away all the time i think it is better to learn how to drive in a manual car. There arw not much to leaen in an automatic car and even as my friends who drive automatic cars they said its really very easy to drive one and they never want to drive one anymre especially here in the city.

Hello asliah, the hardest is to learn manual gear shift. So, if you learn it, automatic gear shift... will be "just nothing"... I learnt manual gear shift since I was 13, now I am 38 and still drive quite well, hehehe. Blessings! ... Dainy

Hello asliah good day..when I learned my first driving it was on a manual way. I think it would be an advantage to learn to drive first on a manual way rather than on an automatic. It would just be too easy if you already learn how to drive from manual to automatic. For me, automatic are only good for those with handicap and aged people. Besides, when an automatic car could have problem you can't push or tow it...it would be a great problem. But it is only my point of view. You have the right to choose which is which for you..Good luck on your driving... Nice day ahead.. Mobhomeir here...

Manual gear is where you use clutch to shift from one gear to another. Shifting gears is to condition your car so that the engine will take the change in speed. Automatic gear does not use clutch and is easy to learn. By the term itself, automatic geared cars can automatically shift from drive, stop and park. My parents had always suggest, and even other professional drivers that it's better to learn manual gear first before the automatic. Primary reason is that most cars are manual geared. You can buy an automatic geared car but when you can't use your car and there's an urgent situation, you'd find a manual geared one to drive. After learning to drive manual geared cars, you can always shift to driving automatic. As I've mentioned, it's easier learned. And if you need to learn something, you may want to start learning the hard one because it might take a lot of effort if you'd learn first and be accustomed to the easier ones, it's like learning to drive the first time.

If you have never driven before, start with the automatic. It's a lot less complicated. Once you get driving down then you can go back and learn the manuel. Concentrate on one thing then another.

It depend on your wish. Now you must have got an idea from other discussions. Still, having a manual practice initially and later on change to automatic will be ideal. Because, once you are ok with the manual gear system, then the operation method of automatic will not be an issue. So, while initial learning automatic method will help you still better. Thank-s
