It's your "right" as s long as you comply with our terms...

Apparently "rights" are things that others only need to respect, if you comply with their demands. The Social Security Act specifically makes it a crime for your social security number to be used for any reason other than the administration of your social security payments and benefits. But private and government organizations often ask you for it anyway. To justify their CRIME, they tell you, "you have the right to not disclose your social security number, but if you don't, then we don't have to..." In other words, your right will only be respected if they get to decide the terms. Another example is Unions... In a closed shop state (such as Wisconsin), if a company or government department is represented by a union, you have to join the union. In other words, you only have the right to work there, if you are willing to let them use part of your paycheck for their political lobbying. They give lip service to your rights, but then amend them by saying, "no one is forcing you to work there". This kind of tyrannical bull crap has no place in a free society. To say things like this is to prove yourself a liar! You might as well be saying, "you have the right to vote, unless you vote differently than how we demand." If you qualify the rights of others, but reserve those rights for yourself, you cannot honestly say you respect rights at all.

Florida is a "Right to Work State" and did not used to have many active Unions. As more 'Yankees" have moved south, there seem to be more folks involved in Unions than there used to be. It is still a right to work state, but I think the places that do have unions tend to "expect" you to join. However, if there is no union majority, you will not get much help from the unions, especially if the company has busted unions in the past. This happened to some friends of mine. Back to the SS#. If you want to move into an apt. complex here, they want your SS# to do a background check on you. You cannot move anywhere without one. I know that we have a lot of criminals here, but I do not like giving my SS# out to property managers.

True, and it's illegal for them to even ask for it.

In the state I live in no shop is a closed shop but for the most part most of the Union jobs here when you get hired for them most people join the Union instead of paying for the cost of the Union to bargain for you. As even if you opt out of the Union you still have to pay the Union some money even as a non-member because you still are under the Contract of the Union even though you are not a member of the Union. Due to the Bargaining agreement. Like I pay 19.00 per month as a Union Member. A non-member would have to pay most likely 5 or 6 dollars as most of my money is going to the Union to lobby for things that I may or may not support. I elected for Full Member status as well for the most part the Union I am apart of I do support what they do. I am also going to go for being a Shop Steward so I am a big time Union person. As for the Social Security Number thing don't companies need that for Taxes and also to prove that you are who you say your are. Also they need the Social Security Number to do a Background check on you.

If you choose to join a union, that is your right. It's extortion to force people to join or pay into a union against their will. Unions illegally use union dues to back political parties and lefty politicians. If someone is forcing someone else to join or pay into a union, they lie when they say they respect rights of workers. Yes, your employer and some others have to have your social security number. It is illegal to use social security numbers for identification.

I am not sure of the laws in Wisconsin but in Oregon you can elect to not be a member which means you pay less to the union and you only pay what it cost for them to bargain out the contract because whether you are a Union member or not you have to pay a small portion to cover the cost of the contract which you still fall under. The place I work has about 95% of the people there are Union Members for the Non-Managment positions.

As far as I know, the only thing a person can request is that none of their dues can be used for political purposes... but since the union thugs are the only ones who get to decide what constitutes "political action", of course, few get any straight answers about how much is spent. A union leader is, by definition, a liar.

My wife belonged to the Teachers Union and asked for her non bargaining expense (the money they use for political activities). Out of a dues collected of over $800 per year she received $1.00. When several teachers asked for a breakdown of how the dues were being spent they were told everything except $1.00 was used for bargaining wages, hours, and working conditions and in enforcing the contract. they were never allowed to see the books except for what the union posted once a year.

hi parated something in your discussion made me remember a saying if you see somebody abusing another person or a dog or child and you do nothing to stop that person, then you are as bad as the abuser. I hate that when you are mandated to spiel out your social security number for some company why on earth would they'd need my social security number. even my health insurance did that when I first enrolled. I have got so when asked for my social security number by some company I say no and if you say I must do that before you will sell me anything I will go to a company that does not take my personal id like that.My california dmv senior ID card has my picturee on it and that should be sufficient id for any sales company.

yep, some guys intend to give lip service to you. They would find any excuse for declining and refusing to help you when you do ask for their help. However, one saying in China goes well: The God would help those willing to give a helping hand to others. Cause and effect! All right?

This has been the law since the creation of social security numbers, when will the federal government enforce yet another law they created.

That's how it is in New Jersey too. I was forced to be in a left wing union and pay dues to that union because of the job I have. As a result I get the regular run of non-work related emails bashing Chris Christie for doing horrible things like refusing to give unemployment benefits to people who are fired for gross misconduct or actually requiring state and county employees to pay 1.5% of their salary for health insurance. When I lived in Florida is was completely different. As a "right to work" state you could not be forced to join a union and, even if you were in a union, if that union chose to go on strike you could ignore them and continue working. That's why unions like the Disney World union were such a joke. If you're job did have a union, you actually benefited more by not joining in Florida. Also when working for government agencies the use of work email for electioneering was banned.

I worked for a place that had a union but it was up to me whether I wanted to join. I didn't want to. But I got all the crappy jobs and the daytime hours they promised me never materialized after I refused to join the union. I ended up quitting.
