I heard on the Abc news last night that The legislative wants to pass the Government of America to shut down due to we're in so much debt. what are your thoughts? do you think this would effect SSI checks, state aide to poor, Unemployment checks and other ways to help the poor that are not working?

I think it is time for someone to take action to slow down the national debt. I think the first thing to do would be to cut defense spending and a lot of the unnecessary spending that is done for having so many people in government. A lot of that could be done by not filling in positions that are vacated by retiring individuals or not currently filled for other reasons. I know that has been done before in many places. There is a lot of duplicate positions and if people would work smarter, they could get the job done with less people. Of course, that would mean more unemployed people, but something has to happen. I don't think "shutting down" the government is the solution, but if it were to analyze its spending, I'm sure that something could be cut without hurting social services. Unfortunately, big business is who is actually making the decisions and they are more interested in their bottom line than in what is good for society as a whole. If we were to get it so they weren't making the decisions, maybe then the country would run as it should.

So how are your sacred cows in the federal budget anymore important than anyone else's sacred cows?

So, are you saying it is more important to send our people overseas to kill people than it is to keep people alive in our own country? I don't know anything about "sacred cows" but I do know that it isn't right that criminals have a better life than many law abiding citizens.

Shutting down the government is not the right term. What happens is non essencial services are and not being done. In other words most of the things the government is not required to do would not get done.

Interesting way of putting it.

Well, the government does "shut down" when the budget isn't passed in time. Of course, there is a difference between "shut down" and "closed down". Emergency procedures are in place for budget shut downs, so there is no crisis. But if the government continues to spend, print money and borrow at the rate it is going, then there will someday be a total meltdown. In such a case, there won't be anything to issue to SS, unemployment or anyone else.

what your saying about the difference "shut down and close down" that makes since. I know that the way the Government is spending that America could run out of funds eventually for SSI and other benefits for Americans. I as A American just thought the phase they said on the news sounded scary.

A shut down does not effect essential services such as social security, military paychecks, etc. Provisions were made by previous Presidents to keep these services flowing in the event of a shutdown. The major difference popping up is that the House wants cuts and the Senate wants to keep 2010 spending levels. The House doesn't want to pass a temporary bill that doesn't at least have a few cuts integrated into it.

you mean that in the constitution it says somewhere that the benefits people get right now can not be cut off cause of a "shut down"? never thought of that thanks for the in put.

If memory serives me...Clinton actually used "shut downs" to balance the budget while he was in office. People still got thier SSI checks and the world (or this country) did not come to an end. I don't know why people are acting this is has not happened before. Or that things worked out just ok.

I didn't know about that. I looked it up on CBS website and found out it happened in year 1995. There was a temporary "shut down". Clinton's budget director said," don't do it again". read about it more at the website below this. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20035053-503544.html

This is what is called "Thrust and Parry" time. It is when the Dems. and Reps. try to get their own way. There will be a battle for awhile and then hopefully there will be an "intelligent" compromise. Of course with our Congress "Intelligent" is a misnomer.
